THE AMAZING OCTOPUS
By: Olivia Macaluso
PREDATOR VS PREY
• Octopi use jet propulsion to get
away from predators
• They suck in water then shoot it out
• A octopus has a siphon on the side
of its head
• That’s how it sucks in water
• A siphon is very small
• But it can suck in a lot of water
• They use ink to get away too
• This blinds the animal or loses its
sense of smell
• This ink is not normal ink
• It can also hide in small places
• Or look like its surroundings
OCTOPI BABIES
• A octopus has about 1,000 babies
• She lays the eggs in a small cave
• When the babies hatch she will die
• The babies have special instincts to help them
survive
• The babies are no smaller than a finger nail
OCTOPUS INK
• This ink is not like the ink we
use today
• The body makes it
• Just like we make mucus
• The ink is stored in a ink sac
• Inside the octopi body
• Melanin is what gives the ink its
color
OCTOPUS COLOR CHANGE
• Octopi have special cells
• To help them change color
• These cells are like our red blood cells
• The cells change color if the octopus wants to change color
• The cells are right under its skin
• That’s why you can see the color
THE BLUE RINGED OCTOPUS
• They are the deadliest sea creature
• They live in the Indian ocean
• Several people die each year because of their poison
• The body makes the venom
• The octopus is 12 to 20 centimeters (5 to 8 inches)
• It eats shrimp and small crabs
• There is about 50 – 60 rings
• The rings appear when it feels threatened
• This is the most deadliest sea animal
INSIDE THE
OCTOPUS BODY
• It doesn't have any bones
• The octopus has blue blood
• It has three hearts
• All of its organs are in its mantle
• A mantle is its head
• The arms are attached to its head
WHAT OCTOPUS EAT
• They mostly eat crabs, crayfish and muscles
• Bottom dwelling octopus eat Polychaeta, worms, crabs and
clams
• Open ocean octopus usually eat prawns, fish and other
cephalopods
• The giant pacific octopus eats crabs fish and clams
• It can also eat sharks and birds!
TYPES OF OCTOPUS
(THERE’S ABOUT 400 SPECIES)
Atlantic Pygmy
• Very small
• Only 5 ½ inches (overall)
• Over three inches of that is arms
North Pacific Giant
• Biggest octopus
• Close to 150 pounds
• As long as 15 feet!
Mimic Octopus
• Aren’t very large
• Overall length of two feet
• Can mimic any poisonous animal
OCTOPI OR OCTOPUS?
The standard English plural showed up in the 1950’s to be
octopuses. They tried to make English more irregular more
like Latin. Latin gave them proper classic Latin endings that
ended with U – S. Octopi is the correct plural of octopus.
But, it is not Latin so that means its what ever you think.
