Disruption, Decentralisation and a Debrief of the rest. A round up of the key themes from The Next Web, Amsterdam, May 2014 given as talks to Sky TV, UK.
Includes Duolingo, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Digital Darwinism, Game changers today, Free is a lie, Post-Snowden Web and the Future of shopping.
2. The Next Web 2014
/ Overview
2,500+ attendees travel to Amsterdam to
discuss the latest web trends, learn about best
business practices and meet the world's
influencers of technology & innovation.
And drink free beer…
5. What is disruption?
/ Disruption
/ Automobiles disrupted rail transport
/ Email disrupted the postal service
/ Online shopping disrupted street shopping
/ TV disrupted cinema & theatre
/ Digital photos disrupted process photos
/ MP3’s disrupted CDs
It’s a giant-killing place
6. Game changers today
/ Disruption
The Internet of Things, Oculus Rift, Google
Glass, wearable tech, Wikipedia, Netflix,
iBeacons, driverless vehicles…
Oculus Rift has not only the potential to disrupt
existing console gaming but also the way we
interact with all digital technology.
7. Disruption creates new markets
/ Disruption
Massive advancements tech but also
imagination & the creation of demand
for something you never knew you needed
Disruptive innovation isn’t necessarily about
making something better, it’s about making it
cheaper, simpler & widening its market
8. Digital Darwinism
/ Disruption
It’s not the strongest that survives, nor the
most intelligent, it is the one that is most
adaptable to change.

9. Digital Darwinism
/ Disruption
Rather than react to change or be disrupted
by it, some forward-looking companies are
investing in digital transformation to adapt &
outperform peers…
/ What uniquely defines the persona of our customers?
/ What is different about their customer journey?
/ What are touchpoints they frequent, how do they use them, with what devices?
/ What are their expectations, what do they value, how do they define success?
/ How are they influenced, & by whom? How & whom do they in turn influence?
#AdaptorDie @BrianSolis
10. Digital Darwinism
/ Disruption
Digital transformation is to effectively engage
digital consumers at every touchpoint in the
customer experience lifecycle.
Social media, mobile, cloud are converging
into a greater force to push businesses out
of comfort zones and into areas where
true innovation can manifest.
#AdaptorDie @BrianSolis
11. Digital Darwinism:
unpredictability
/ Disruption
Organisations value predictability because
they like projects to run smoothly.
But insights are anything but predictable…
they are disruptive.
They come at unexpected times & take
unexpected shapes. They cause chaos & can
be perceived as unwanted hassle.
They are essential to the creative process.
Wired UK
14. Duolingo
/ Disruption
Learning a new language raises chances of
getting a job, but is expensive.
You help translate text from the web & learn a
language at the same time for free
e.g. Practice ‘food’ words & translate page from English to Spanish
CNN pay for translation
Harnessing human time & energy for society
@LuisVonAhn
15. Duolingo
/ Disruption
‘Using Duolingo for 34 hours is equal to 1
semester of college education’
Luis von Ahn, Founder of Duolingo
‘More people learning a second language on
Duolingo than in the entire primary education
system in the US, 12.5M active users
#TNWEurope’
@PeterNeufeld
@LuisVonAhn
16. Free is a lie
/ Disruption
Always on, always seeing, always listening.
We extend our biological capabilities using
these technologies
We experience & manipulate the world via our
devices & services
These tools are essential to participating in
modern life, the companies that ‘get’
Experience control the market
Aral Balkan @Aral
17. Free is a lie
/ Disruption
Q. Who owns these tools by which we
experience & manipulate reality?
They are closed silos who
share business model of free
Aral Balkan @Aral
18. Free is a lie
/ Disruption
Google’s business model is to monitise your
data, they need your data to grow & the end
game is providing connectivity.
Aral Balkan @Aral
19. Free is a lie
/ Disruption
The biz model of free is the biz model of
corporate surveillance. If every internet
company has this model where’s choice?
Privacy is not about whether you have
something to hide. Privacy is the right to
control what you want to share & what you
want to keep to yourself.
The true cost of ‘free’ is our human rights
Aral Balkan @Aral
20. Free is a lie
/ Disruption
Need new category of ethical disruption
‘Experience-driven open’
Beautifully designed, easy to use, free &
open products that empower people
to own their own tools & data
1. Design led 2. Free & Open 3. Independant

Aral Balkan @Aral
21. / Disruption
Ask yourself
/ What can we as a company do
to disrupt, again?
/ Who will try to disrupt us next?
/ Can we disrupt & benefit society?
23. Post-Snowden web
/ Decentralisation
There is a belief that large organisations &
governments stretch & overstep their
authority. Entrusting our info to
organisations in general is a fundamentally
broken model.
What is the chance of an organisation not
meddling with our data, given they tend to
have an income model that requires they
know as much about people as possible.
24. Bitcoin
/ Decentralisation
Bitcoin is one of the greatest innovations in
human history. A bitcoin society would mean
the government would have to get the
consensus of the people. They can't just print
money for their war.
Limitless money for governments is the true
evil. Bitcoin is the solution.
@StefanMolyneux
25. Ethereum
/ Decentralisation
An online service that lets you build almost
anything in the image of bitcoin & run it
across a worldwide network. Bitcoin is a
way of reliably storing & moving digital
objects or pieces of info. Today, it stores &
moves money, but the same system could
give rise to a new breed of social networks,
data storage systems & securities markets
All operated without a central authority.
@KevinRose, Google Ventures
26. / Decentralisation
Ask yourself
/ What can we do as a company
to install trust? (What IS trust?)
/ How can we use our customers
data safely & ethically?
28. The Future of Shopping
/ Debrief
'eBay now' real-time shopping:
People can't be bothered to wait, deliver to
where I am now. You tell me what I want &
I'll tell you where & when I want it
Pay by face: pre-check in to shop
iBeacons: knows your in & phone pay-ready
The future is a wallet in the cloud that can
talk to anything via API’s
John Lunn @JohnPayPalDev
29. The Pinterest Interface
/ Debrief
Design has to be about experience.
Empowering everyone to be creative.
Tech products should be about solving
real human problems
Evan Sharp @eshp
30. Like 4 Real Project
/ Debrief
Like is another commodity to be cashed.
Like is part of our Human Nature, Like is Free.
We should take more time for ourselves,
& not always chasing virtual ‘Likes’
Fake Guru, Dadara
31. / Debrief
Ask yourself
/ How can we utilise & define
next generation shopping
experiences into our business?
/ What can we do to ensure our
interfaces are industry defining,
intuituve & habit forming?
