ASSURE Assignment
3 May 2014
 A- Analyze Learners
o Students are in the fourth grade. There are 20 students total, 11 of the students are
girls and 9 of them are boys. Among the 20 students, 2 are Muslims, 3 are Jewish,
2 are African American, and the remaining 13 students are assumed to be
Christians.
 S- State Objectives
o Students will describe different holiday traditions such as those practiced in
Christmas, Kwanza, Hanukah, and Ramadan after researching, during a day
designated for the computer lab, a given holiday that they do not normally
celebrate. Students may watch videos on YouTube about specific holiday
practices or visit blogs pertaining to holidays. Students may also use books or
magazines as a source for information. I will also briefly go over some holiday
traditions during a period of class time. Students will then present their
information to the class in any appropriate way they choose. Examples may
include a poster, power point presentation, writing a song, acting out the holiday,
or any other creative way (must be approved by the teacher). A list of questions
that must be answered will be provided, but students will be highly encouraged to
include more than the required information in their presentations. Students will
describe holiday traditions with 90% accuracy by the end of the unit.
 S- Select Materials
o Students will use the Internet as their main source. They will be able to access
different resources, YouTube, and blogs having to do with holiday traditions. A
day will be designated for the computer lab where students may research his or
her given holiday and take notes on information he or she sees as important.
Books and magazine articles will be brought in from the library and if a student
has free time after finishing an assignment, he or she may use that time to acquire
more information for the final project.
 U- Utilize Media and Materials
o I will research ahead of time and come up with a list of websites that may be
helpful in the research of holiday traditions. Videos from YouTube will be shown
(after being previously viewed by me) to the class. Also, I will preview the books
and magazines from the library and mark pages that would have helpful and
necessary information that students may use.
 R- Require Learner Participation
o While students are researching, I will walk around the computer lab to monitor
what students are researching and to make sure students are staying on task. If
students are to have any questions, I will be available to guide them in the right
direction. During research, I will also ask questions about the holidays to make
sure students are getting enough information and to encourage classroom
discussion.
 E- Evaluate and Revise
o Before research begins, students will begin to fill out his or her KWL. The K
stands for what the student knows, W stands for what the students wants to learn,
and the L stand for what the student learned. Students will fill out the K and W
portion of their worksheet. Students must give at least one fact that they know for
each holiday and one thing that they want to know about each holiday. At the end
of the unit students will give two to three facts that they learned about each
holiday that they do not normally celebrate.
