Mobile is a billion-dollar per year sector for Silicon Valley, with steady growth in dollars invested as well as number of companies funded since 2000. Total mobile investment increased from $1.8 billion in 2007 to $5.4 billion in 2010, despite an overall decline in tech venture capital. The number of companies receiving funding also grew from 50 in 2007 to over 80 in 2010. Social media has been a major focus of investment in recent years due to the massive growth of the mobile web and mobile applications. Hardware companies like Motorola and software firms like Microsoft have also seen significant acquisition activity.
