2. Nowadays Warsaw is the centre
of government administration,
culture and science.
During the period of socialism
in Poland it used to be also
one of the major centres of industry.
Now strategic industry
centres are situated out of the
capital city.
Talking about various industry
sectors in the city limits and on
its outskirts we can mention
• pharmaceutical industry
• food industry
• cosmetic industry
We would like to concentrate on
some important plants which could
represent the above sectors.

5. FOOD INDUSTRY
The best example of our local food industry is the first factory of chocolate in
Poland – Wedel. From the beginning of 1845 Karol Wedel started his way to
this factory while he was working in the cake shop of Karol Grohnert in
Warsaw. In 1851 Karol Wedel opened his own shop and a nearby located
factory of chocolate in Miodowa Street. In 1865 his factory was extended
and moved to Szpitalna Street. In 1855 Wedel brought from Paris a special
machine for rolling sweet substance and started production of drinking
chocolate what caused a meteoric development of his firm.
In 1876 Karol Wedel presented his son Emil Wedel with the factory.
It was a wedding present.
In the 1930s the production was moved
to a new factory in Kamionek.
Wedel chocolate gained recognition
in the whole central Europe.
