A Visit to Blind Peoples Association by the students of NIMCJ Institute
As part of their Development Communication Exposure the students
participated in this sensitization program of BPA
The students of semester I & III from National Institute of Mass
Communication and Journalism; Located on S.G. Highway, Ahmedabad;
attended a ‘Sensitization cum Exposure’ visit to Blind Peoples Association
on the 18th of September, 2010, which was from 11:00am-5:00pm.
The whole session was being designed and hosted by Ms. Kshama Shah
(Communication & Information Officer, BPA).
The NIMCJ students had a guided tour around the institution; which
included the newly inaugurated Physiotherapy centre, the Special need care
centre, the Mental Hygiene clinic, the ITI centers for computer training,
beauty parlour training, electrical motor operations training etc. All the
above centers were run for the benefit of the Blind and Handicapped
students. These courses are run with the assistance of government grants and
are all certified courses to help bring these disabled people to the main
stream of the society.
There was a session by the Executive Director of BPA, Dr. Bhushan Punani;
on ‘Introduction to Disability Laws & Rehabilitation Council of India’. This
session provided an insight into the role of media to create awareness
amongst the mass’s particularly for the enforcement of laws created for the
benefit of the disabled.
The next session was on the ‘Role of media in creating positive environment
for the persons with disabilities’; which was being conducted by Ms Nandini
Rawal (Project Director, BPA). Taking current cues from the main stream
media she tried to explain to these media students on ‘how’ to refrain
themselves from projecting the disabled as ‘unwanted people’ and to create
inspiring stories for their benefit.
Students even had a chance to view two screenings of short films made on
BPA, by two of the media students working for the organization. These
films were titled “The Ultimate Adventure” & “Introducing BPA”.
