2. POP
Pop music is a genre of popular music, which originated
in the 1950s, deriving from rock and roll. Pop music often borrows
elements from other genres including urban, dance, rock, Latin and
country. However they are generally short to medium-length songs which
have a basic format, as well as the use of repeated choruses. Pop music
can be seen to be aimed at a wider audience than many other genres as
it encompasses many genres into one. From the 60's, 'Pop music' was
increasingly seen as a different genre to rock music. Where rock aspired
to authenticity and quality, pop was more commercial and accessible to a
wide audience. pop music has taken influences from most other genres of
music. The availability of television in the 50's had a large effect on pop
music as due to acts being televised pop stars had to be visually pleasing
in their performances, hence the appeal of artists such as Madonna and
Michael Jackson who could be seen as being good performers.
3. ROCK
Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll"
in the USA in the 50s, and changed into a range of different genres from the
60s. It was heavily influenced by R&B and country music. Typically, rock is
song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature and using a basic verse-chorus
form, but the genre has become more diverse. The Lyrics often stress
romantic love but also address social or political themes. Rock can be seen to
be dominated by white male musicians which could have an effect on the
themes addressed in their music. Rock puts more effort into musicianship and
good live performances than Pop music does.
4. R&B
Rhythm and blues is a genre of popular African American music
that originated in the 1940s. The term was originally used to
describe recordings marketed towards an urban African American
audience. Often used piano, guitars, bass, drum, saxophone and
sometimes background vocalists. The lyrics often surrounded the
African American experience at the time and the fight for freedom
against the white supremacists.
