This document summarizes a lesson on recycling and the long u sound using the story "June Robot Cleans Up" from the Treasures reading program. The teacher used a Promethean Board to display the story during a shared reading activity. Students highlighted words containing the long u sound as the class read together. The technology engaged the students and allowed the teacher to assess their understanding of the target sound.
2. Shared Reading
Lesson on
Recycling
Using the story,
“June Robot
Cleans Up” from
Treasures
3. Core Standard
◦ First Grade Language Arts Standard
4; Objective 1; Indicator c: Identify
and pronounce sounds for short and
long vowels using patterns (e.g., vc,
vcv, cvc, cvvc, cvcv, cvc-silent e), and
vowel digraphs (e.g., ea, ee, ie, oa,
ai, ay, oo, ow) accurately in words.
4. Students will learn the
sound that the letter u
makes when a silent e is
added and will be able to
read with better prosody.
7. After giving a short review on recycling,
which the children had previously learned
about, I brought up the June Robot story on
the Promethean Board.
We read the story together in a shared
reading activity.
I read some pages modeling prosody as I
read. The children read the other pages.
8. Students came up
and highlighted
words in the story
that contained the
long u sound using
the Promethean
board.
9. The Promethean Board and CDROM worked very well.
My teacher had not been familiar with using the
board and I was able to help her learn how to use it.
The students were excited and remained engaged
throughout the whole lesson.
The technology greatly helped the visual learners in
my classroom to stay on track.
If I were to do this again, I would try to face my
students more as I read so I could manage the
classroom better.
10. Student Use of Technology
◦ Although I remained in control of the reading
experience, the students became actively
engaged in the lesson.
◦ They were able to come up and highlight words
in the actual story using the pen on the
Promethean Board which they greatly enjoyed.
◦ I was also able to assess their understanding of
the long u sound based upon what they
highlighted.
11. Technology Use is Essential
◦ In this shared reading lesson, the
technology was essential to the learning
process.
◦ Technology was the focus of the lesson as
we read the story from the board.
◦ My assessment was also based upon the
technology used as the students
highlighted words.
12. Focus on Learning Task
◦ The Promethean Board was necessary for the
students to meet the learning objectives.
◦ All students could see it and read at the same
time as I pointed to each word projected on the
board so students were engaged in a successful
shared reading activity.
◦ Students were able to improve their prosody as
well as their understanding of the long u sound
as they highlighted such words on the board.
13. Focus on Learning Task
◦ There was minimal time needed to explain
how to use the technology since we used
the technology as a class.
◦ They only instruction necessary was to
show students how to use the pen to
highlight the words.
14. Added Value
◦ The lesson could have been done without the
use of the Promethean Board as students all
had copies of the story in their Treasures
books.
◦ Because we used the Promethean board,
students were able to read all together which
is the purpose of a Shared Reading activity.
◦ Students remained engaged since the text
was more attractive and visual on the board.
15. Added Value
◦ Without the use of the Promethean Board,
I would not have been able to assess the
students’ understanding of the long u
sound through the highlighting.
◦ The students also would not have been
able to read at exactly the same time since
I could not guide them in their reading as
there was no projected text.
