1. KAPTUR
CULTURAL CHANGE LEADING TO INCREASED FUNDING FOR ARTISTIC RESEARCH
Led by the Visual Arts Data Service, a Research Centre of the University for the Creative Arts, and
working collaboratively with four institutional partners: Glasgow School of Art; Goldsmiths, University
of London; University for the Creative Arts; and University of the Arts London; KAPTUR will discover,
create and pilot a sectoral model of best practice in the management of research data in the arts.
AT EACH INSTITUTION:
 a policy on managing research data with adaptations for the visual arts
 a pilot technical system to support the effective management of research data
SUPPORTED BY:
 at a strategic level by the KAPTUR Project Sponsors
 on a practical level by the KAPTUR Project Officers, Project Manager and Technical
Manager; led by the KAPTUR Project Director (contact details)
 through working groups established at each institution to include members of the following
departments: IT, Research Office, Researchers, Library
 advice from the Digital Curation Centre and support through the wider JISC Managing
Research Data programme
 a series of resources created through the KAPTUR project such as toolkits and publicity
materials
BENEFITS FOR VISUAL ARTS RESEARCHERS:
 ease of access to information about their, and others, artistic research to inspire future work,
leading to funding opportunities and future collaborations
 increased support for the artistic research process
 increased awareness within the Higher Education community, and beyond, about the value of
artistic research
BENEFITS FOR THE INSTITUTIONS:
 improved administration of research enabling efficiency savings for reporting to the REF
2014; to funders; to Freedom of Information requests; and more
 time and cost saving, and valued added, from collaboration between partners within the
KAPTUR project
 policies and systems in place to support researchers, leading to a stronger case for future
funding particularly in a financially restrictive climate with funders increasingly focused on
Open Access and Research Data
