The presentation is my account on one of the biggest, most devastating wars of all time.
All the facts are verified to my best knowledge, and any discrepancy which might have crept in the exact timeline of events is regretted.
3. World War I radically changed the political map of the world.
Meanwhile, the victorious Allies such as France, Belgium, Italy,
Greece, Romania gained territories.
The loss of territory and the defeat caused rise of nationalist and
patriotic feelings across European countries.
In Germany, the economic, political and territorial loss after the
Treaty of Versailles (Germany lost 13% of its home territory and
all overseas colonies), caused widespread anger, and radical
notions of patriotism.
Japan gets on the offensive, attacks China.
4. With the onset of the Great Depression, domestic support for
the Nazis rose and, in 1933, Hitler was appointed Chancellor of
Germany.
He abolished democracy, espousing a radical, racially motivated
revision of the world order, and soon began a
massive rearmament campaign.
Hoping to contain Germany, the United Kingdom, France and
Italy formed the Stresa Front.
The Soviet Union, concerned due to Germany's goals of
capturing vast areas of eastern Europe, wrote a treaty of
mutual assistance with France.
8. 17 September 1939
Soviets also
attack Poland.
Poland is now
divided between
Germany and the
Soviets.
9. April 1940
Germany
attacks Denmark
and Poland.
Secures iron ore
shipments from
Sweden, which
the allies were
about to
disrupt.
10. The Axis Powers Advance
10 May 1940
Germany
invades France,
Belgium,
Netherlands and
Luxemburg.
11. The Axis Powers Advance
10 June 1940
Italy joins
the Axis
Powers,
attacks
France.
12. USA is still
out of the war.
United States
embargoed steel and
mechanical parts to
China, against Japan.
They further agree to
trade American
destroyers for British
bases.
Besides, they work out
a lend lease policy
for war supplies with
UK and China.
13. The Axis
Powers Advance
Germany, Italy and Japan
formally sign the
Tripartite Treaty and
form the Axis Powers.
Hungary, Slovakia and
Romania soon joined the
Axis Powers.
14. 22 June 1941
The Axis Powers launch Operation Barbarossa,
a surprise offensive against Soviet Union.
15. 7 December 1941
Japan went on
offensive
overdrive,
attacking British
and American
territories in Asia
as well as Pacific.
This included
attack on Thailand,
Malaya, Hong Kong
and the US Navy
Base Pearl Harbour.
18. 6 June1944 – D DAY
Allies invaded France, these were highly
successful and threw Germany out of
Southern France.
19. 22 June1944
Soviets attacked a strategic offensive against
Germany (Operation Bagration), which led to the
complete defeat of the German Army Group Centre.
21. Hitler commits suicide, Mussolini is killed, and
Germany surrenders in Italy.
German Instrument of Surrender is signed on 7 May
22. The Potsdam Meeting
On 11 July, the Allied leaders met
in Potsdam, Germany. They confirmed
earlier agreements about
Germany, and reiterated the demand
for unconditional surrender of all
Japanese forces by Japan,
specifically stating that "the
alternative for Japan is prompt and
utter destruction".
23. The Brutal End
Hiroshima - Nagasaki
Japan ignored the Potsdam terms and USA felt compelled to
drop atom bombs on Japan, thus compelling Japan to
surrender and marking the end of the World War.
