                                           These are some most common
                                          electronic items which ultimately
                                                 ends up as E-Waste.

Where does the e-waste go to?

Nearly 75% of old electronics are
dumped in storage because of the
uncertainty of how to manage these
                                materials.

There is a lot of stuff lying at home, no it's not waste.

                  - Buys new products when something "cooler" is launched in the market.

                  - Bothered by the space occupied by unused and old electronic products and
hence he would throw it in the bin if he can't find someone to give it to.

                  - Would love to give away old electronics to those who need it and is
                    constantly pro-actively looking to give.
Owner - Stingy Sapna

I am very emotionally attached to my things I will not give them
                   away at any cost.

                  - Extremely emotional about what she possesses and keeps products with
                    her for years together.
                  - Money, rewards, incentives nothing will make her want to donate/sell.
Rahul - Looks for discounts or rewards while buying new products.
26, Bangalore - Never looks to find out a way of appropriately disposing off e-waste.
                  - Aware of the consequences of e-waste but does not want to do anything

Collection agency - GreenPsycle

We find it very difficult to reach to the consumers who want to dispose off their e-waste and also awareness
amongst the consumers is a huge challenge.

 - GreenPsycle is a collection agency that operates predominantly in South Bangalore. They collect e-waste
from individuals and segregate them before sending it to the recyclers.

 - They set up collection receptacles in multi-storied apartments where people can drop off their e-waste.
These receptacles are emptied every fortnight.

 - Awareness about their receptacles spreads by word-of-mouth. Sometimes they conduct collection
drives in public places such as malls and parks.
Collection agency - GreenPsycle

 - They find that consumers are not completely sure about their authenticity and are hence hesitant to
give away larger electronic wastes. Batteries constitute majority of the collection.

 - Maintaing the infrastructure and logistics poses a serious challenge.
The collection receptacles needs to be guarded by a watchman to safeguard against theft. Collecting and
transporting the waste is expensive and there is no significant monetary gain in collecting items such as
   batteries and wires.
What the expert says

- Awareness among corporates is high but something really needs to be done at the individual level.
Corporates just want to get the junk away, they don’t look for incentives.
They have issues related to data-cleaning from storage devices.

- It’s largely an unorganised market. A lot of smaller vendors are involved and they have a lack of basic knowledge.
Dirty down-the-line with locals engaging in the business of recycling or more precisely re-selling the waste.

- People are not aware of the health hazards of the e waste.

- Once it reaches the recyclers segregation of the metal does not happen completely. A lot of the waste goes unaccounted
for, no one knows its end life.

- A more efficient way of waste collection is required.

- Refurbishers use the extracted metals from the recyclers and make useful products of high value.
The e-waste actors

Producer / Manufacturer: Cater to global requirements and market

Consumers: Aware, not capable or not aware

Dealer: Willing, overburdened

Collection centre: Available, inaccessible to the consumers.

Recycler: Are they regulated / standardized?

Refurbishers and Dismantlers: Show me the waste !!
Loopholes in the existing system

- Processing dominated by unmonitored Informal Sector.

- Uninformed consumers - "What is e-waste? Why should I worry?"

- Multiple Stakeholders - producers, consumers, refurbishers, dealers, recycler,
                       dismantlers, collection centre.

- Insufficient (but increasing) Government Focus.

- Almost non-existent culture of consumers recycling their waste.
Initial concept
A web portal through which consumers can send in their e-waste to responsible collection agencies.
In turn consumers get rewarded for the products they send in.
Scenario of usage - Individuals

                                                          Collection Agency
Initial concept

- Customer lands on portal (E-cycle) and registers

- Selects products from a list

- Selects the collection agency he wishes to give them to.

- Selects reward coupons in exchange for e-waste.

- Collection agent goes to customer's house to pickup e-waste

- Inspector at facility approves the items and then the customer can redeem his reward coupons.

Did away with allowing the user to select Collection Agencies.
E-Cycle can act as one central Collection Agency and have the authority to decide which
collection agency to send the recieved e-waste to.

  • 12. Owner - Generous Rahul There is a lot of stuff lying at home, no it's not waste. - Buys new products when something "cooler" is launched in the market. - Bothered by the space occupied by unused and old electronic products and hence he would throw it in the bin if he can't find someone to give it to. Rahul 26, Bangalore - Would love to give away old electronics to those who need it and is constantly pro-actively looking to give.
  • 13. Owner - Stingy Sapna I am very emotionally attached to my things I will not give them away at any cost. - Extremely emotional about what she possesses and keeps products with her for years together. - Money, rewards, incentives nothing will make her want to donate/sell. Rahul - Looks for discounts or rewards while buying new products. 26, Bangalore - Never looks to find out a way of appropriately disposing off e-waste. - Aware of the consequences of e-waste but does not want to do anything Sapna about it at present. 32, Bangalore
  • 14. Collection agency - GreenPsycle We find it very difficult to reach to the consumers who want to dispose off their e-waste and also awareness amongst the consumers is a huge challenge. - GreenPsycle is a collection agency that operates predominantly in South Bangalore. They collect e-waste from individuals and segregate them before sending it to the recyclers. - They set up collection receptacles in multi-storied apartments where people can drop off their e-waste. These receptacles are emptied every fortnight. - Awareness about their receptacles spreads by word-of-mouth. Sometimes they conduct collection drives in public places such as malls and parks.
  • 15. Collection agency - GreenPsycle - They find that consumers are not completely sure about their authenticity and are hence hesitant to give away larger electronic wastes. Batteries constitute majority of the collection. - Maintaing the infrastructure and logistics poses a serious challenge. The collection receptacles needs to be guarded by a watchman to safeguard against theft. Collecting and transporting the waste is expensive and there is no significant monetary gain in collecting items such as batteries and wires.
  • 16. What the expert says - Awareness among corporates is high but something really needs to be done at the individual level. A lot of the waste goes unaccounted for, no one knows its end life. - A more efficient way of waste collection is required. - Refurbishers use the extracted metals from the recyclers and make useful products of high value.
  • 17. The e-waste actors Producer / Manufacturer: Cater to global requirements and market Consumers: Aware, not capable or not aware Dealer: Willing, overburdened Collection centre: Available, inaccessible to the consumers. Recycler: Are they regulated / standardized? Refurbishers and Dismantlers: Show me the waste !!
  • 18. Loopholes in the existing system - Processing dominated by unmonitored Informal Sector. - Uninformed consumers - "What is e-waste? Why should I worry?" - Multiple Stakeholders - producers, consumers, refurbishers, dealers, recycler, dismantlers, collection centre. - Insufficient (but increasing) Government Focus. - Almost non-existent culture of consumers recycling their waste.

Initial concept - Customer lands on portal (E-cycle) and registers - Selects products from a list - Selects the collection agency he wishes to give them to. - Selects reward coupons in exchange for e-waste. - Collection agent goes to customer's house to pickup e-waste - Inspector at facility approves the items and then the customer can redeem his reward coupons.
