History of Somavamsha Shasrarjun Kshatriya. PANCHANGA SUMMARY
9. AASHLESHA NAKSHATRA
Murlidharsa F. Kalburgi
In the previous issue, you have learnt about
the Nagai Inscription and shree Nageyallamma
temple in Nagai village in Chitapura taluk of
Kalburgi district.
We have other Inscriptions --- Sumanagad
Inscription, Hathingumpha Inscription and
Aihole Inscription. The founder of the
Rashtrakuta King (which later became the vast
Empire) Dantidurga belonged to Manyakhetwe
(Katwe) family of Somavamsha. He came out of
Chalukya’s sovereignty and built an Independent
Kingdom. The preceding five generations had
owed allegiance to the Chalukya Kings who
were their blood relations. During the reign
of the Chalukyas when the Arabs had invaded
Gujarat region, Rashtrakuta, Dantidurga
was a powerful warrior and had helped the
Chalukya Vikramaditya II. After the demise of
Vikramaditya II, Kirtivarma II came to throne.
Dantidurga rejected the allegiance to him and
declared that he was a free king and founded
his own kingdom in 754 A.D. His Kingdom
was extended upto the Malava region in the
North. The Rashtrakutas originally belonged
to the Marathawada of today’s Maharastra.
The Inscription says so. They were called the
masters of Lattur. They had the titles “ Lattur
Puravareshwara and Paramanbhattarike” The
then Lattur is todays Latur in Maharastra.
Dantidurga ruled only for four years. He was
a tactful ruler, shrewd and courageous. He was
a good organizer. He had no male children and
after his death, his uncle Krishna I came to the
throne. During his reign, prince Govind invaded
the Kingdom of Vengi Chalukyas. The Chalukya
King Vishnuvardhana IV was defeated. Many
battles were fought between the Rashtrakutas
and the Vengi Chalukyas.
The greatest contributions of Krishna I
was the building of Kailasanath Temple in
Ellora (Maharastra). This temple is a
rock-cut shrine. The Elephanta caves
and its architecture and paintings
are the great contributions. The
temple of Kailasa at Ellora is the
most extensive and sumptuous.
This temple was hewn out of
a rocky hill-side by Krishna I
in the 8th century. It is hewn
out of a great rectangular
quarry. It measures 27 feet
long and 154 feet wide with
a scrap of 107 feet deep at the
back. The Kailasa at Ellora is an
example of rock architecture that is
unrivalled. The sculptures in
the Elephanta cave are Life-like
creations. The Somavamsha
Kshatriyas have contributed rich heritages all
through Karnataka, Maharastra and Gujarath
and elsewhere in India. Many more researches
have yet to be done. Our people should try to
understand their rich historical background and
enhance their self-esteem.
Two hundred kilometers from Latur are towns
of Nanded and Parabhani. The Indrajeetasa
families (sooth-sayers) of Parabhani are called
‘Bhats’. They were the inhabitants of Parabhani.
They used to visit Kalburgi, Chittapur, Gadag,
Gajendragad, Gudur, Bagalkot, Hanumasagar,
Guledgudda and Hubballi once in Four or Five
years and used to collect lineal details. Even
now Ugrashenasa, the descendent of the Bhat
family of Parabhani comes here frequently to
collect the lineal details of the various SSK
families.

The ninth star in the horoscopic
chart is the Aashlesha Nakshatra.
It is a congregation of six stars
in circular form. It is in the
degree from 106-140 to
220. The deities regulating
this star are Adishesha
(Nag devata), Ganapathi
and Subramanya. In
the comity of nine stars
(Navagrahas) Rahu and
ketu are the deities of this
Nakshatra. Rahu represents
the head of the serpent and
Ketu the body. The westerners
call Rahu as dragon-head
and Ketu as dragon-tail.
Lakshamana and
Shatrughna, brothers
of Shri Ram were born in this
Nakshatra. It is symbolic of the nails
and glands that are supposed to be
the sources of complicated diseases.
The first four phases of this star are
covered in the Karka rashi (Cancer).
This is potentially a watery star.
The specialty of the Aashlesha
Nakshatra is that if a female child is
born in this Nakshatra, peace-homa
has to be performed. This is
supposed to be equal to the birth
of a serpent and held that there
would be ‘sarpa-dosha. Similarly if
all the planets are surrounded by
Rahu and Ketu, it is said to be the
‘Kaala Sarpa-dosha’. If one planet
lies outside, it is said to be ‘partial
kaala-dosha’. If the things are so,
‘peace-homas’ have to be performed
on the day of Aashlesha Nakshatra.
On that day Aashlesha sacrifice
ritual has to be performed and the
consecration of naga has to be
performed (This is called ‘kaalasarpa
shanti or kaala Rahu shanti).Also
should be done Champa Shrusti
pooja.
Aashlesha Nakshatra is propitious
for performing consecration
of Subramanya Manikantha
Aiyappaswami Nag deity and for
performing ferocious planets’ shanti
and for ferocious sort of Homa and
Havanas.
The persons born in the Aashlesha
Nakshatra possess attractive and
infatuating body structures. They
are quick-tempered and express
ill-tempers before others. They are
hard-hearted, ambitious, roaming
and proud.
The persons born in this
Nakshatra can undertake the
manufacture of chemicals, alcoholic
drinks, hotel industry, rice hoarding
and trade and can act as agents
in any business or Trade. This
Nakshatra is propitious for sale and
business of artificial and ready-made
items, steel and stainless steel
manufacture or sale.
The Janmaksharasa of the
persons born in the Aashlesha
Nakshatra are-‘di’ for the first
phase, ‘du’ for the second phase’,
’de’ for the third phase and ‘do’ for
the fourth phase.
For the person born in Aashlesha
Nakshatra --- Magha, Moola,
Ashwini are the wealth stars. They
can undertake business, trade,
money-lending and any good tasks.
Krittika, Uttara, Uttarashadha,
are the welfare stars. They can
undertake welfare activities and
other ambitious and important
deeds.
Mrigashira, Chitta and Dhanista
are the achievement stars. They
can undertake new businesses,
adventurous and enterprising tasks.
Punarvasu, Vishakha,
Purvashadha, Pushya, Anuradha
and Uttara Bhadrapada are the
friendly stars. They can undertake
partnership ventures with the
persons of the same nakshatra.

GOODDEEDSLEADTOGOODANDEVILDEEDSTOEVILThe good deeds man does and sins he commits are
weighed and accordingly rewarding the humans is the
work of God. He follows the moral laws. Whenever we
are troubled and tortured we abuse God. We say that
God is unkind to us; our fate is not good. We accuse the
God as being in favor of the rich.
Long ago, there lived a wealthy man. He had
endeared himself by his charities and good deeds.
People loved and respected him and followed his dictates
and advices. The wealthy man had five sons and a
daughter. His house was the biggest in that village. It
had a storey. Beside the house was a cowherd. Grass
and hay was piled up sufficiently. He gave food to the
needy and hungry. The wealthy man decided to arrange
the wedding for his children. In the nearby town was
a college. The newly appointed principal was a young
man. He was from a good family. He had no parents,
sisters or brothers. The wealthy man thought he was the
suitable prospective son-in-law. He consulted the senior
members of the village. They okayed the proposal.
The river near the village was in spate. The elders
suggested that they could go when the tides receded.
Two days later they went to the town and the young man
consented to marry the wealthy man’s daughter. The
wedding was a grand event. The wealthy man gave gifts
to people. The daughter and her husband were happy
and days passed happily. The daughter conceived a child
and the wealthy man performed the ritual of Seemanta
in a grand manner. He gave his son-in-law a gold chain
and dresses. The daughter gave birth to a male child
and after five months went to her home and lived with
her husband happily. Four years later she again become
pregnant. Her husband had gone to Bangalore on office
work. One night their house was burgled. The burglars
had taken away all the things at home. The husband
came and when he saw how the house was ravaged, he
fell unconscious. People sprinkled water at his face and
he woke up. He accepted the fate’s test and decided to
face the difficulties boldly.
Days passed. The pregnant wife had to go to her
parent’s home. They had no money. They had decided to
go on foot to cover the ten kilometer distance. When they
had gone half the way their four year son felt hungry.
It was a rainy day and the dark clouds had gathered
all over the sky. The wind began to blow and the sky
sparkled lightnings and there was a sound of thunders.
The mother wanted to cook some rice. Presently it began
to rain and did not stop for two hours. They needed the
dry wood to cook the food. The husband went to find the
wood. There was semi darkness in the jungle. He trod
on the black serpent that had coiled the dry tree. It bit
him and he fell down and soon died. The woman asked
her son to go and fetch his father. The boy went into
the forest and lost his way. The woman went in search
of her husband and son. Soon she found her husband
dead. She cried loudly. After a while she collected the
wood there and set fire to her husband’s corpse. The
missing son made her still more pathetic and sad. Soon
she felt the delivery pain and gave birth to twin male
babies. She started towards her parents’ home carrying
the twin babies. The river was flowing with force and in
the knee-deep water she had to cross the river. She took
one child and left the other on the bank. While crossing
the river, she was glancing at the child on the bank.
Suddenly she saw the child being carried away by a wolf.
She felt very sad and horrified. The child in her hand
also fell down and the flowing water took it along. On the
other bank of the river people had gathered for a funeral.
The people recognized this woman as the daughter of
their rich man. Her parents had sent their servant to
bring their daughter home. But the previous night fire
had caught the piles of their hay and their house was
also burnt and they were all dead. The people of the
village had gathered on the bank of the river for their
funeral.
The people of the village took the woman to the
nearly Ashram Parnakutira. The Guru listened to her
pathetic story and consoled her. The Guru meditated for
a while and told her that her present
predicament was due to her bad deeds
in the earlier life. In her previous life
she had destroyed a family. As an elder
daughter-in-law, she had killed all her
in-laws by burning. She had stolen all
their wealth. The evil deed done then
resulted in her present fateful tragedy.
The guru said that good deeds yield
good rewards and the evil deeds lead
onto destruction and unhappiness.

AASHLESHA NAKSHATRA Murlidharsa F. Kalburgi In the previous issue, you have learnt about the Nagai Inscription and shree Nageyallamma temple in Nagai village in Chitapura taluk of Kalburgi district. We have other Inscriptions --- Sumanagad Inscription, Hathingumpha Inscription and Aihole Inscription. The founder of the Rashtrakuta King (which later became the vast Empire) Dantidurga belonged to Manyakhetwe (Katwe) family of Somavamsha. He came out of Chalukya’s sovereignty and built an Independent Kingdom. The preceding five generations had owed allegiance to the Chalukya Kings who were their blood relations. During the reign of the Chalukyas when the Arabs had invaded Gujarat region, Rashtrakuta, Dantidurga was a powerful warrior and had helped the Chalukya Vikramaditya II. After the demise of Vikramaditya II, Kirtivarma II came to throne. Dantidurga rejected the allegiance to him and declared that he was a free king and founded his own kingdom in 754 A.D. His Kingdom was extended upto the Malava region in the North. The Rashtrakutas originally belonged to the Marathawada of today’s Maharastra. The Inscription says so. They were called the masters of Lattur. They had the titles “ Lattur Puravareshwara and Paramanbhattarike” The then Lattur is todays Latur in Maharastra. Dantidurga ruled only for four years. He was a tactful ruler, shrewd and courageous. He was a good organizer. He had no male children and after his death, his uncle Krishna I came to the throne. During his reign, prince Govind invaded the Kingdom of Vengi Chalukyas. The Chalukya King Vishnuvardhana IV was defeated. Many battles were fought between the Rashtrakutas and the Vengi Chalukyas. The greatest contributions of Krishna I was the building of Kailasanath Temple in Ellora (Maharastra). This temple is a rock-cut shrine. The Elephanta caves and its architecture and paintings are the great contributions. The temple of Kailasa at Ellora is the most extensive and sumptuous. This temple was hewn out of a rocky hill-side by Krishna I in the 8th century. It is hewn out of a great rectangular quarry. It measures 27 feet long and 154 feet wide with a scrap of 107 feet deep at the back. The Kailasa at Ellora is an example of rock architecture that is unrivalled. The sculptures in the Elephanta cave are Life-like creations. The Somavamsha Kshatriyas have contributed rich heritages all through Karnataka, Maharastra and Gujarath and elsewhere in India. Many more researches have yet to be done. Our people should try to understand their rich historical background and enhance their self-esteem. Two hundred kilometers from Latur are towns of Nanded and Parabhani. The Indrajeetasa families (sooth-sayers) of Parabhani are called ‘Bhats’. They were the inhabitants of Parabhani. They used to visit Kalburgi, Chittapur, Gadag, Gajendragad, Gudur, Bagalkot, Hanumasagar, Guledgudda and Hubballi once in Four or Five years and used to collect lineal details. Even now Ugrashenasa, the descendent of the Bhat family of Parabhani comes here frequently to collect the lineal details of the various SSK families. (To be continued.....) The ninth star in the horoscopic chart is the Aashlesha Nakshatra. It is a congregation of six stars in circular form. It is in the degree from 106-140 to 220. The deities regulating this star are Adishesha (Nag devata), Ganapathi and Subramanya. In the comity of nine stars (Navagrahas) Rahu and ketu are the deities of this Nakshatra. Rahu represents the head of the serpent and Ketu the body. The westerners call Rahu as dragon-head and Ketu as dragon-tail. Lakshamana and Shatrughna, brothers of Shri Ram were born in this Nakshatra. It is symbolic of the nails and glands that are supposed to be the sources of complicated diseases. The first four phases of this star are covered in the Karka rashi (Cancer). This is potentially a watery star. The specialty of the Aashlesha Nakshatra is that if a female child is born in this Nakshatra, peace-homa has to be performed. This is supposed to be equal to the birth of a serpent and held that there would be ‘sarpa-dosha. Similarly if all the planets are surrounded by Rahu and Ketu, it is said to be the ‘Kaala Sarpa-dosha’. If one planet lies outside, it is said to be ‘partial kaala-dosha’. If the things are so, ‘peace-homas’ have to be performed on the day of Aashlesha Nakshatra. On that day Aashlesha sacrifice ritual has to be performed and the consecration of naga has to be performed (This is called ‘kaalasarpa shanti or kaala Rahu shanti). Also should be done Champa Shrusti pooja. Aashlesha Nakshatra is propitious for performing consecration of Subramanya Manikantha Aiyappaswami Nag deity and for performing ferocious planets’ shanti and for ferocious sort of Homa and Havanas. The persons born in the Aashlesha Nakshatra possess attractive and infatuating body structures. They are quick-tempered and express ill-tempers before others. They are hard-hearted, ambitious, roaming and proud. The persons born in this Nakshatra can undertake the manufacture of chemicals, alcoholic drinks, hotel industry, rice hoarding and trade and can act as agents in any business or Trade. This Nakshatra is propitious for sale and business of artificial and ready-made items, steel and stainless steel manufacture or sale. The Janmaksharasa of the persons born in the Aashlesha Nakshatra are-‘di’ for the first phase, ‘du’ for the second phase’, ’de’ for the third phase and ‘do’ for the fourth phase. For the person born in Aashlesha Nakshatra --- Magha, Moola, Ashwini are the wealth stars. They can undertake business, trade, money-lending and any good tasks. Noopur Kiran Kankrej for their good achievements GOODDEEDSLEADTOGOODANDEVILDEEDSTOEVILThe good deeds man does and sins he commits are weighed and accordingly rewarding the humans is the work of God. He follows the moral laws. Whenever we are troubled and tortured we abuse God. We say that God is unkind to us; our fate is not good. We accuse the God as being in favor of the rich. Long ago, there lived a wealthy man. He had endeared himself by his charities and good deeds. People loved and respected him and followed his dictates and advices. The wealthy man had five sons and a daughter. His house was the biggest in that village. It had a storey. Beside the house was a cowherd. Grass and hay was piled up sufficiently. He gave food to the needy and hungry. The wealthy man decided to arrange the wedding for his children. In the nearby town was a college. The newly appointed principal was a young man. He was from a good family. He had no parents, sisters or brothers. The wealthy man thought he was the suitable prospective son-in-law. He consulted the senior members of the village. They okayed the proposal. The river near the village was in spate. The elders suggested that they could go when the tides receded. Two days later they went to the town and the young man consented to marry the wealthy man’s daughter. The wedding was a grand event. The wealthy man gave gifts to people. The daughter and her husband were happy and days passed happily. The daughter conceived a child and the wealthy man performed the ritual of Seemanta in a grand manner. He gave his son-in-law a gold chain and dresses. The daughter gave birth to a male child and after five months went to her home and lived with her husband happily. Four years later she again become pregnant. Her husband had gone to Bangalore on office work. One night their house was burgled. The burglars had taken away all the things at home. The husband came and when he saw how the house was ravaged, he fell unconscious. People sprinkled water at his face and he woke up. He accepted the fate’s test and decided to face the difficulties boldly. Days passed. The pregnant wife had to go to her parent’s home. They had no money. They had decided to go on foot to cover the ten kilometer distance. When they had gone half the way their four year son felt hungry. It was a rainy day and the dark clouds had gathered all over the sky. The wind began to blow and the sky sparkled lightnings and there was a sound of thunders. The mother wanted to cook some rice. Presently it began to rain and did not stop for two hours. They needed the dry wood to cook the food. The husband went to find the wood. There was semi darkness in the jungle. He trod on the black serpent that had coiled the dry tree. It bit him and he fell down and soon died. The woman asked her son to go and fetch his father. The boy went into the forest and lost his way. The woman went in search of her husband and son. Soon she found her husband dead. She cried loudly. After a while she collected the wood there and set fire to her husband’s corpse. The missing son made her still more pathetic and sad. Soon she felt the delivery pain and gave birth to twin male babies. She started towards her parents’ home carrying the twin babies. The river was flowing with force and in the knee-deep water she had to cross the river. She took one child and left the other on the bank. While crossing the river, she was glancing at the child on the bank. Suddenly she saw the child being carried away by a wolf. She felt very sad and horrified. The child in her hand also fell down and the flowing water took it along. On the other bank of the river people had gathered for a funeral. The people recognized this woman as the daughter of their rich man. Her parents had sent their servant to bring their daughter home. But the previous night fire had caught the piles of their hay and their house was also burnt and they were all dead. The people of the village had gathered on the bank of the river for their funeral. The people of the village took the woman to the nearly Ashram Parnakutira. The Guru listened to her pathetic story and consoled her. The Guru meditated for a while and told her that her present predicament was due to her bad deeds in the earlier life. In her previous life she had destroyed a family. As an elder daughter-in-law, she had killed all her in-laws by burning. She had stolen all their wealth. The evil deed done then resulted in her present fateful tragedy. The guru said that good deeds yield good rewards and the evil deeds lead onto destruction and unhappiness.
