- Could I have made an entire screencast for this webinar Yes, but would it have been the most effective way to communicate the information? Probably not…and we’ll see why.Not all screencasting softwares were created equal and there are reasons why you might choose one over the other.There are some best practices screencasters should follow and we’ll learn about those by watching segments of two screencasts.
- Give me a check for yes, and x for no if you were able to complete the pre-assignment, 100%. (created an account? viewed the two screencasts? answered the questions?)Tell them that we’ll be talking more about the two screencasts they viewed a little later in the class so, keep the notes handy.Let’s start at the beginning with what a screencast is next slide
- Based on what you discovered by doing the preassignments, how would you define a screencast? What does the word screencast mean to you? You can type your thoughts into the chat box below but I’d like to hear from at least 2 of you so, when you’re ready, raise your hands to share.
- Again, based on the preassignments you all did, and based on your own thoughts and ideas, take a minute to think about when you would create a screencast. When would a screencast be an appropriate educational or communication or marketing tool?Don’t talk about specific ideas yet… Have the participants claim space, write their ideas on the boardCreate a video tour of a library’s web site (or parts of the web site)Create a video tutorial of the library’s OPACCreate a video demonstrating to library patrons how to use a database or certain features of a databaseCapture technical problems which you can send to your IT staffCreate a visual FAQ knowledgebaseRecord online TV shows
- Or when would you use more traditional methods of communication instead … and why?Have the participants claim space, write their ideas on the board – sign their names – and then call on them individually to explain/elaborate on their ideas.
- Is the information correct and true? Is the topic appropriate for a screencast or could it have been communicated more effectively?Did the screencast cover the information too slowly or too quickly? How about total length? Effective screencasts are usually between 3-5 minutes in length. Was the information organized in an appropriate manner? If you had to, could you follow the video step by step and replicate the outcome? How well did the creator use the screencasting software? Consider audio/video/ etc.

- Welcome back … Reminder: You will have access to today’s webinar via a link I’ll send out later this morning so you can go back and rewatch all of it or specific segments as you need. So, you might still want to take notes but you will not be without the information you need to do the homework assignment.
- Preface with: brief overview of the screencasting process for within Screencast O Matic. Process might be different with different software. If you choose to participate in part two, you’ll need to replicate these steps in order to complete part of the homework. 6 steps to creating a screencast with SOM.
- Navigate to SOM web site.Create an account.
- Once you click alt-p, you can navigate anywhere within your computer and SOM will capture everything that shows up on the screen. Websites, databases, email programs, applications like iTunes, etc. If you can see it on your screen you can capture it with SOM.
- Upload to SOM is preferred because it’s quicker than the others and that is what I ask you to do as part of your homework. Upload to YouTube only if you already have a YouTube account. Export to movie takes the longest but then you have a hard copy of your video on your local computer which you can then put on CDs and distribute as you wish…it’s not tied to an internet connection. Title, Description, Language are all required fields. Options are optional.
- As part of your homework for part 2, in addition to creating a screencast, you are asked to send me the URL to the screencast so I can share it with everyone else in the class. Part two of this course requires you to watch one other person’s screencasts and to evaluate them as we did the sample ones today. I’ll distribute the urls appropriately.
- After initials are on the board, ask participants to hold down ctrl key and answer the questions VOIP
- Must register for part 2 if you’re going to do the work and you want to receive credit. Assignment is outlined in detail in participant guide.
