JACKI – Before you ask us, we are going to try to explain the difference between a wiki and a blog.We are going to look at the differences and do NOT want to confuse you more. There is a black line if you look at a wiki and a blog as we describe it here. That line becomes very gray with added permissions and preferences.
JACKI – Wiki’s and blogs use a web application to create a simple webpage. You really don’t need to know any HTML (the code) or an HTML editor (dreamweaver).Pretty much if you can type and format, you can create a wiki or a blog. They are pretty quick, set up the account, create the wiki page or blog page and then type.Once you type, you publish your content – it’s pretty immediateWikis are pages that can be edited by a group or team, while blogs are posts or entries and then viewers can comment
JACKI – We’d like to show you a little scenario to give you an illustration of how you can use a wiki and a blog1st – a wiki
JACKI – Ron, Peg, Jackiand Sherryare going on a camping trip and they want to make sure they take all of the correct supplies. They know they need to plan and that good coordination is going to be key.No electronics or batteries will be allowed! They are strictly roughing it.
Jacki – Jacki gets the idea to use a wiki to coordinate their trip. She remembers hearing once that pbwiki is a good place to create a wiki. She goes to pbwiki.com - CLICKand clicks the button to create a wiki. - CLICKOn her blank wiki…she creates a camping list… - CLICKShe adds a tent, sleeping bags and firewood. - CLICKAlso, she signs herself up to bring the tent. When she is done creating her list…she clicks the Save button - CLICKand then tells all Peg, Ron and Sherry to go look at the wiki.
Jacki – Ron goes to Jacki’s wiki and realizes that they will also need to take Newspaper and Matches on their trip. He clicks the Edit button - CLICKand adds his information. He also remembers that he has Firewood and Matches that he can take. – CLICKSo…he signs himself up.Then…he clicks the Save button to update the Wiki. - CLICK
Jacki – Now it’s Sherry’s turn. She visits Jacki’s wiki later that day and notices that the group does not have a cooler on the list. She clicks the Edit button - CLICKand adds a cooler - CLICKShe also signs herself up to bring the sleeping bags and cooler. She clicks the Save button – CLICKand that updates the wiki.
Jacki– Finally…Peg goes to the wiki and sees that the group has thought of everything they need, but still needs someone to bring the newspaper. She knows that she has a lot of old newspapers in the basement, so she clicks the edit button – CLICKand signs herself up for the newspaper. Then, she clicks save - CLICK
Jacki – With the wiki created and the packing list complete…the group creates some additional pages to coordinate potential camping locations, activities that they will do on their trip and dates for the trip. As each new wiki page is created, each of these pages gets linked off of the main wiki page.We can even link to other webpages as we find URLS about our possible locations.
JACKI – Now for a blog.
Sherry – Sherryis going on a camping trip and wants to share her experience with all of her friends. She creates a blog where she can record everything about the trip…from the planning stages through telling everyone what a great time she had.
Sherry – Sherry goes to bloggger.com – CLICKAnd clicks the Create button to start a blog – CLICKOn her new blog…she types a POST or ENTRY announcing that she is going on a camping trip and is really excited about it. She Clicks the SAVE button – CLICKAnd her blog post is published. Along with the information that Sherry entered, the date she posted the information is also displayed.
Sherry – Later that day Ron gets an email from Sherry saying that she has started a blog about a camping trip she is planning. Ron goes to Sherry’s blog and gets very worried. He had a friend who went to the Happy Times campground last year and his friend said he saw a bear. Ron thinks he should warn Sherry .He clicks the comment button – CLICKAnd adds a note about the bears. When he is done, he clicks the Save button – CLICKAnd his note is added along with the time he added the note.
Sherry – Just as Ron finishes typing his comment on Jacki’s blog, Jacki begins reading the blog.As it turns out…Jacki was just at Happy Times campground last weekend and although there were bears…they were very friendly bears..and they did not bother Sherry at all. She decides that she should let Sherry know. So…she clicks the Comment button – CLICKAnd adds her comment. Then, she clicks the Save button and her comment is added.
Sherry – Sherry goes to bloggger.com – CLICKAnd clicks the Create button to add a post or entry – CLICKOn her new post…she types that she is happy for the comments and that those bears were friendly. She Clicks the SAVE button – CLICKAnd her most recent blog post is published. Along with the information that Sherry entered, the date she posted the information is also displayed. This post appears at the top of her blog.
SHERRY – So as you can see there are some differences between wikis and blogs.Wikis have multiple authors so many people are reading and making edits.Blogs have just one author or owner of the posts.Wikis are pages or maybe just a page, where the team makes edits and resaves, then another member makes another edit or addition and saves again. More pages can be linked.Blogs rely on comments to have the conversation or dialogue.Wikis are generally used for knowledge sharing – this is NOT always the caseBlogs are generally opinion sharing – but again NOT always the caseWikis include links to other wiki pagesBlogs link to external pages (NOT with in the blog)
SHERRY– Hopefully you are thinking a little about which tool you want to use.Wikis…Usually used to express group or team thoughts or ideasProvides a constantly changing page (perhaps)Usually project or workshop or topic basedSo you will be working with your group to collaborate on a wiki page or group of wiki pages to get your webpages up there. It’s a many to many communication since your team created the page(s) and you are sharing with everybody.
JACKI – Or maybe you want a blog….Usually used to express individual thoughts…. Or one person speaking if you willPosts are static – you don’t go back and edit themBecause of the comments and the time sensitivity of the posts, the discussion can be ongoingImmediate – you create a post, type, publish – done … then move on to other things Blogs are more conversational in that one person makes a statement (a post) and then other will enter their response (comment) to what was said, and the dialogue continues from there. Because I’m the owner of the blog and my posts, it’s a one to many communication. Many can be just your friends or the world Comments come in on each post.
JACKI - So have you decided which tool you want to use for your stuff? Here are a few places that you can get a blog or a wiki.In class today we will be looking at blogger.comBut PSU has a blog spot. Only for PSU paid employees And SP 2007 has a nice blog area too. Just w/in AG.If you are interested in a wiki, you can look at pbwiki.comBut PSU just started a wiki space too. I’m pretty sure anybody with a PSU access account can get in and create a wiki. And SP 2007 has a wiki area too. Again only for AG
