Serverless runtimes are often hidden in a cloud providers offering and exposed solely by their programming API and deployment procedures. In this talk, we’ll explore an open-source Serverless runtime built for the cloud and on-premises, running on the BEAM with a polyglot programming model to build general purpose applications. Building general purpose applications using multiple languages and having a story how to handle state was our main motivation to explore the space of a Serverless runtime to be built. We think the BEAM, OTP and Elixir/Erlang are a perfect match to build on. With this talk, we combine herein the world of the BEAM with cloud technology like a gRPC-based protocol, Kubernetes and a polyglot programming model with languages supported like Go, JavaScript, JVM-languages, Python and many more. https://icfp21.sigplan.org/details/erlang-2021-papers/13/Lightning-Talk-eigr-io-A-Serverless-Runtime-on-the-BEAM

RAFT protocol is a well-known protocol for consensus in Distributed Systems. Want to learn how consensus is achieved in a system with a large amount of data such as Axon Server’s Event Store? Join this talk to hear about all specifics regarding data replication in highly available Event Store! Axon is a free and open source Java framework for writing Java applications following DDD, event sourcing, and CQRS principles. While especially useful in a microservices context, Axon provides great value in building structured monoliths that can be broken down into microservices when needed. Axon Server is a messaging platform specifically built to support distributed Axon applications. One of its key benefits is storing events published by Axon applications. In not so rare cases, the number of these events is over millions, even billions. Availability of Axon Server plays a significant role in the product portfolio. To keep event replication reliable we chose RAFT protocol for consensus implementation of our clustering features. In short, consensus involves multiple servers agreeing on values. Once they reach a decision on a value, that decision is final. Typical consensus algorithms make progress when any majority of their servers is available; for example, a cluster of 5 servers can continue to operate even if 2 servers fail. If more servers fail, they stop making progress (but will never return an incorrect result). Join this talk to learn why we chose RAFT; what were our findings during the design, the implementation, and testing phase; and what does it mean to replicate an event store holding billions of events!

Ratpack is a set of libraries for developing fast, efficient, evolvable and well tested HTTP applications written in Java 8 or any alternative JVM language that plays well with Java, such as Groovy. The session will start with an introduction about Ratpack, and what makes it different from other popular frameworks like Grails or Vert.x, to name a few. Then, it will cover the fundamentals of the async programming model used in Ratpack applications, as well as other core concepts like handlers and the registry. Also, some of of the core modules ("plug-ins") will be described. Finally, it will cover how to test Ratpack applications using Groovy and Spock.

There are many tools and possibilities available in the Icinga monitoring ecosystem. Setup Icinga 2 within a distributed architecture, put Icinga Web 2 on top and visualise alerts. Further you’ve already setup your preferred graphing solution (Graphite, InfluxDB, etc.) and Grafana greets you with a shiny metrics dashboard. Log events are processed and Elastic Stack or Graylog add more possibilities to correlate them with monitoring alerts. Having so many tools requires you to know how to connect them, or simply integrate an existing data source or frontend into your all-in-one user dashboard. Be it Graphs in your detail view, additional log events on a critical service view or yet a global map for location based alerts. Maybe you’ll also want to provide as much details in your notifications as possible, think of fancy Grafana graphs. This talk dives into existing and possible integrations, and explains why you sometimes just write your own integration. Carsten is the author of the Icinga Web 2 Grafana module while Michael focusses on Dashing and log processing. We’ll catch up with war stories (“meh, nothing exists”) to hero stories (“hooray, users love my integration”) and hope to motivate everyone out there doing the same. We will continue with practical development on Friday during the OSMC hackathon.

Watch on demand: www.nginx.com/resources/webinars/three-ways-to-automate-with-nginx-and-nginx-plus The process of deploying applications in many organizations today is slowed down by manual processes. These manual processes create extra work for developers and operations teams, cause unnecessary delays, and increase the time it takes to get new features and critical bug and security fixes into the hands of customers. Automating common tasks – using tools, scripts, and other techniques – is a great way to improve operational efficiency and accelerate the rollout of new features and apps. The potential improvements of automation are impressive. With the proper components in place, some companies have been able to deploy new code to production more than 50 times per day, creating a more stable application and increasing customer satisfaction. High-performing DevOps teams turn to open source NGINX and NGINX Plus to build fully automated, self-service pipelines that developers use to effortlessly push out new features, security patches, bug fixes, and whole new applications to production with no manual intervention. * Best practices for continuous delivery and automated deployments * How to quickly and easily deploy new features or bug fixes into production with the push of a button * Techniques to orchestrate and manage your NGINX-powered infrastructure using tools like Ansible, Chef, and Puppet * How to use Jenkins to modify your NGINX configuration * Methods to automate the discovery of new services using NGINX Plus

Things like Infrastructure as Code, Service Discovery and Config Management can and have helped us to quickly build and rebuild infrastructure but we haven't nearly spend enough time to train our self to review, monitor and respond to outages. Does our platform degrade in a graceful way or what does a high cpu load really mean? What can we learn from level 1 outages to be able to run our platforms more reliably. This talk will focus on on setting up a CICD pipeline using Jenkins. We start by configuring Jenkins to use our Nomad platform to autoscale job runners. After which we ll look at using the newly released nomad-pack tool to convert, deploy and test and existing nomad job.

JavaOne 2016 It is time to move your Java EE builds over to Gradle! Gradle continues to gain momentum across the industry. In fact, Google is now pushing Gradle for Android development. Gradle draws on lessons learned from both Ant and Maven and is the next evolutionary step in Java build tools. This session covers the basics of switching existing Java EE projects (that use Maven) over to Gradle and the benefits you will reap, such as incremental compiling, custom distributions, and task parallelization. You’ll see demos of all the goodies you’ve come to expect, such as integration testing and leveraging of Docker. Switching is easier than you think, and no refactoring is required.

You’ll see demos of all the goodies you’ve come to expect, such as integration testing and leveraging of Docker. Switching is easier than you think, and no refactoring is required.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
