The New York State Prisoner Justice Conference brings together organizations and individuals working for prisoner justice in New York. There are approximately 90,000 incarcerated people in New York across prisons and jails from diverse backgrounds. The conference aims to share information, strategies, and ideas between these organizations to create a statewide movement for change and more humane alternatives to incarceration. It also aims to connect activists across New York through the New York State Prisoner Justice Network to facilitate collaboration between organizations and strengthen their work for justice.

2. MISSION The mission of the New York State Prisoner Justice Conference is to bring together the varied and diverse organizations and individuals working for prisoner justice in New York State. There are approximately 90,000 people currently incarcerated in New York’s prisons and jails – people of all ages, sexualities, genders, abilities, and documentation statuses. The overwhelming majority are people of color and of low income. Dozens of organizations address issues of concern in regard to prisoners, their families, and those impacted by the criminal justice system. The goal of the Prisoner Justice Conference is to bring these organizations together to share information, energy, strategies, concerns, ideas, best practices, and hopes at the conference itself, and then through ongoing communication after the conference. In this way we hope to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts – a statewide movement for change, justice, compassion, and more human and humane solutions to social problems in place of reliance on incarceration.

NEW YORK STATE PRISONER JUSTICE NETWORK Connecting Regions, Issues, and Strategies The goal of the New York State Prisoner Justice Network is to build our individual and collective strength and to challenge and change New York’s criminal injustice system. The Network’s purpose is to explore, plan, strategize and implement organizations and individuals working collaboratively to change the criminal injustice system, to bring our collective strength to bear on changing the intolerable system of mass incarceration, injustice, and disrespect for the lives of our loved ones and the survival of our families and communities, that now prevails, and to reverse the culture of racism, inequality, and scapegoating that sustains it.
