measurable goals can
improve education”.
-This Act requires
states to develop
assesments in basic
skills.
-Decides what
standardized tests
students will have.
-Professional
development for
teachers.
-Decides on
funding for
schools.
-Is an elected
council who
determines the
educational policy
in small areas.
-They adequate
schools.
-They determine
the positive growth
of schools.
Types of schools
Public Schools
I. Supported by the local, state
and federal government
funding.
II. Public schools vary in the
resources per student.
Private Schools
I. They must be state-certified.
II. These are more selective
when choosing students.
III. They are more exigent (
college level)
IV. They have no legal
obligation to accept any
interested students.
Home schooling
I. Education is given by the
parents.
II. One of the reasons of this
system is that some families do
not want to expose their
children to the social pressures
of schools.
Elementary School
I. Students study basic maths,
algebra and English.
II. It goes from kindergarten until
fifth grade ( in some schools
until eight grade)
Middle School / Junior
High
I. It is the intermediate level between
Elementary School and High School.
II. Students have more Independence.
They can choose some subjects (
electives).
III. Grades start to become important.
High School
I. In this school, subjects are seen in a
deeper way.
II. This “lifestyle” is often represented
on TV.
Postsecondary Education
College:
a. It offers a baccalaureate degree.
b. They are expensive. (Prices vary
from zero to 60,000 $)
c. You have to take exams such as the
SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and
the ACT (American College Testing).
Community College:
a. It is a more accessible way to have a
postsecondary education.
b. They are least expensive. (Half the price
of most universities)
c. They offer a two-year associate degree.
Master’s degree
a. It is a degree that shows
that a student has mastery
in specific areas of a
subject.
b. It is a two-year degree.
Doctorate
degree
Postdoctoral
study
