Copyright protects any original work created by an artist, author, or songwriter. The internet has made it easy for individuals to pirate
o
copyrighted materials such as movies, music, etc. Who do you think should be held responsible for these sites - the creators, users, or
both? Why?
Both. I think that the creator needs to be careful who displays their creation, but the users need to ethical about how the creators work is
displayed and protected.
Do you now, or have you ever used an MP3 file sharing network? If so, do you fear a company taking legal action against you?
o
I have not used an MP3 file because I would prefer to buy the actual CD. I have received copies of music from other people who made
the CD's on their computer. I always wonder if they will get in trouble for downloading the music illegally.
What effect, if any, do you feel that these peer-2-peer networks have on the music industry?
o
I don't think it has too much effect because the music industry is flourishing regardless. It may mean the artist has to do more
promotional events, but the money will still be there.
In 2000, Napster was sued (and found liable) for copyright infringement under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Later Blender
o
magazine named the suit against Napster as the number 1 music industry quot;screw-up of all time.quot; While many bands, such as Metallica,
filed their own suits, the band Radiohead found that Napster actually helped the sales of their album, Kid A. What do you think the music
industry could have done differently to capitalize on Napster's popularity?
Yes. I feel that Napster helps people preview the artists new music. There needs to be more restraints on sites like Napster, but I think it
could give a lot of bands more exposure.
Now that legal sites, such as itunes, are available, how do you think the illegal sites have fared?
o
The new legal sites seem to have take over the Internet downloading market, but people still use the illegal sites because they are free.
The illegal sites will never go away because people will always be looking for a way to save money.

copyrighted materials such as movies, music, etc. Who do you think should be held responsible for these sites - the creators, users, or
both? Why?
Both. It is the creator and their representatives' responsibility to ensure that the copyright is not being compromised. However, it is also
the user's job to ensure that they are not breaking the law by violating copyright laws.
Do you now, or have you ever used an MP3 file sharing network? If so, do you fear a company taking legal action against you?
o
I have used file sharing systems off and on for about 10 years. I do get worried about getting in trouble. However, my hard drive crashes
so often, it is unlikely that they will find much illegal music on it.
What effect, if any, do you feel that these peer-2-peer networks have on the music industry?
o
I think that they are having a negative impact on the sale of CDs, as seen my profits. This is only because many artists and labels are not
embracing the new phenomenon.

Record companies and artists should have embraced the new technology. If they had worked to develop something that was agreeable to
everyone, it could have avoided all of the lawsuits. Maybe they thought that Napster and programs like it would not last and CDs would
remain the best way to purchase music. With the increasing popularity of MP3 players, that is obviously not the case.

The users. How would you feel if your means of making money was pirated.
Do you now, or have you ever used an MP3 file sharing network? If so, do you fear a company taking legal action against you?
o
I don't. If I am lucky enough to have a career, I don't want people taking money from me.
What effect, if any, do you feel that these peer-2-peer networks have on the music industry?
o
It takes the ability to make money as an artist out of the hands of the people that were brave enough to shoot for something risky.

industry could have done differently to capitalize on Napster's popularity?
Included the artist on the sales of the mp3s from the beginning. It's like going into someone’s house, taking something and selling it.
Now that legal sites, such as itunes, are available, how do you think the illegal sites have fared?
o
People will always have a lack of respect for something that they think is insignificant. Music and art are completely subjective and people
will still steal what they don't truly value.
