         LEADERSHIP STYLES 2012

“We all learn in different ways. We all
for how we tackle new experiences. Understanding the
learning cycle and how you go through it, can help
explain how you deal with problems, people and new
situations. And understanding the differences between
yourself and others can give insights into your personal
and professional relationships.” KOLB
OUTCOMES

 WHAT
     (1) To discover more about learning preferences and your
     personal learning style
     (2) To link the relevance of learning styles to school
     leadership
     (3) To understand the impact that learning styles have on
     interpersonal relationships

 WHY
To enhance understanding of ef fective interpersonal
        relationships within our network
        To develop our social intelligence
KOLB

 David A . Kolb (born 1939) is an American educational theorist
those interests and publications focus on experiential
learning, the individual and social change, career
  development and professional education.
 He is the founder and chairman of Experience Based Learning
  Systems, Inc. (EBLS).
 Kolb earned his MA and Ph.D. from Harvard in social
  psychology.
RECENT LEARNING

                Where
                were
What did you? How did
   you you go
 learn? about it?
               Were you on
               your own or
               with others?
               Did it seem
                difficult or
                  easy?
KOLB LEARNING ST YLE INVENTORY

 First answer the questionnaire, scoring
 each question from
4 -MOST like you to 1 - LEAST like you.

 Then use the coloured overlay sheet to
collate the scores for each colour
 (purple, pink, orange and green).
UNDERSTANDING THE LEARNING CYCLE
SCORING YOUR LEARNING ST YLE

Do the following calculations:

total for PURPLE – total for PINK = how you
take in experience

total for GREEN – total for ORANGE = how you
deal with experience

Now plot these two scores on the Learning Style
Grid.
WHAT EACH LEARNING ST YLE MEANS
DIFFERENCE IN ST YLES?

Now find someone from the opposite learning style to you and
discuss the dif ferences between your learning styles.
Think about:
 What is the most obvious dif ference between your learning
  styles? Are there any similarities?
 How would this look in your everyday working relationships?
 Do you anticipate any areas of conflict? How would you
  manage these situations?
 What could you do to accommodate the learning style of
others? How do you “bridge” between your dif fering styles?
 What impact does this have in your classroom? In your
  leadership roles?
STRENGTHS
DEVELOPING YOUR LEARNING ST YLE

You can choose to develop a learning style. This is the easiest
way to develop your learning styles:

You may feel drawn to people who have a similar
                approach to learning.
But you will experience the learning cycle more
completely with those whose learning style is
             different from your own.
It is essential to value different learning styles –
problems are solved more effectively by working
                    with others.
POINTS TO PONDER

“Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is
about one life influencing another.” John C Maxwell

“Lead from the back...and let others believe they are in front .”
Nelson Mandela

“Education can't make us all leaders, but it can teach us which
leader to follow.” Bel Kaufman
