How many media companies build multiple platforms or tools to do the same job? News Corp decision in April to create a new unit to share content and resources is a move in the right direction. But centralization comes at a price. (e.g., Yahoo mandated the same video player across multiple properties – entertainment, news, sports. But Yahoo News wouldn’t switch. Why? Because the new, mandated player did not meet News requirements.

After decades of pack reporting, The St. Petersburg Times won a Pulitzer Prize for Politifact Recognizing how unique the content was, Yahoo News and St. Pete teamed up to turn Politifact into a Quiz game that appeared on both sites. Neither had budget, but we collaborated on the Flash application to get it launched six weeks before the election. My only regret is that we didn’t do it sooner and offer it to all of our Newspaper Consortium partners.
