2. Hotel for Artists, Bergen aan Zee, The Netherlands, 1995
Programming and design for 100,000 SF facility to create temporary
live / work / sell / inspire conditions for artists as well as the public,
done as a thesis.
Located along the coast of Holland in a well-known Artist town, the
zoned plan (top right) provides for private studios (bottom right, for a
sculptor and musician, respectively) as well as exhibition space,
gallery, sculpture garden and café / restaurant.
The ground floor of the hotel houses a lobby / library as well as a
performance hall. The project was done partly in collaboration with
Artists, for programming and design concept feedback.
3. De Monchy Plein, The Hague, The Netherlands. 300+ Apartment project in historic city designed by
Ricardo Bofill. Worked as CAD-Technician/Designer at local Architect PPB, Haarlem, The
Netherlands on DD’s & CD’s. 1998
4. House for 2+, Straw-bale construction, Sierra Foothills, CA (1997-98)
850 SF 2-Bed / 1-Bath house designed as a vacation home for the
young family of a Dutch musician. Designed in collaboration with the
Owners remotely while still in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, as
Freelance.
Experimental construction type of steel-frame with (rice) straw bales,
locally harvested (upper right picture taken during CA).
The character of the house was to be inspired by a local Spanish style
adobe house, and for that purpose a lot of re-used wood was also
incorporated into the structure.
The rendering at the bottom right shows an early design concept with
much more glazing than the final design.
5. Wing House, Sierra Foothills, CA.(2002)
Set just below the top of a hill, this 3-Bed / 2-Bath 1,500 SF
residence provides unobstructed views of the Sierra Nevada
mountain range (see top right) from every room in the house
(including both bathrooms, featuring tubs with a view), by locating
the circulation at the ‘rear’. The roofscape was inspired by the
image of a bird landing, with the main volume being the living
room, while the ‘tail’ houses a library / study.
During construction relocation of the entrance (originally located
along the diagonal view shown in the photo above) to the opposite
side of the house became necessary, due to neighbors.
Done as Freelance Designer.
6. The Sacramento Primary Care Center, Sacramento, CA
The Sacramento Primary Care Center project started while working for SSA in Roseville, but finished
while working for HGA (SSA merged with HGA at the beginning of 2000). A 100,000 SF clinic with an
11,000 SF Public Health Lab for the County of Sacramento, a 11,000 SF Pharmacy and 4 very different
types of Clinics plus a community meeting room (in one of the ‘towers’, over the main entrance).
Completed in 2004. Job Captain / Designer for both SSA and HGA. Coordinated two remote teams.
7. Pinole Medical Office Building, Pinole, CA
25,000 SF MOB for group of 6 different Medical
practices, including a Lab. Designed in 2003, the
project was put on hold after Schematic Design was
completed. Worked as Job Captain / Designer on
the project. Incorporated specific requirements
stemming from City of Pinole design guidelines.
The First Floor plan (to the right) shows intricate
layouts for 4 medical practices, including 2 dental
offices, OB/Gyn and ENT/Laser suites, in a cross
configuration with a central lobby as a spine.
8. “Twelve” project, Sacramento, CA.
10 Townhomes and 30 Lofts with Retail.
Concept sketches for adaptive re-use of
historic warehouse / factory in
combination with the addition of
Townhouses, adjacent to historic district.
The design called for adding loft
apartments on top of the existing
structure, as well as creating lofts and a
parking garage inside the historic
warehouse / factory. Although received
with great enthusiasm by the City, the
project did not get beyond SD / Planning
Submittal, due to plans being put on hold
by Owner. Worked as PM / Designer for
Macaulay + Architects. 2006.
10. Southside Urban Villa’s, Sacramento, CA.
Nine 3-story Townhomes on small urban infill lot,
with remaining historic brick structure and walls.
Worked as Project Manager / Designer for Macaulay
+ Architects on this from 2004-2006.
11. Southside Urban Villa’s, Sacramento, CA
The units all have a balcony diagonally
facing the alley and North. With a large
open living space on the 2nd floor,
combining kitchen, dining and living, the
units’ internal circulation and spatial
development takes it’s cue from the
diagonally located garage in each unit, off
the central alley.
12. The Orleans in Old Sacramento Historic District.
45,000 SF of new construction (infill of ‘gap’) with
reconstruction of historic façade (based on 1857 rendering
of Orleans Hotel, see adjacent rendering).
24 High-end apartments over restaurant and parking garage.
Finished in 2008. Worked as Project Manager / Designer /
CA on this project from 2006-2008 for Monighandesign,
Sacramento, CA..
13. The Orleans (rear), Old Sacramento, CA
A stunning 6 stories at the rear, as seen
from the restaurant patio, with upper levels
set back enough from 2nd Street, in order
to give the appearance of a 3-story building
typical for the 1800’s. A basement parking
level makes up the historically defined
difference in elevation between the street
and the alley. (See building section).
14. Girl Scouts Heart of Central California Headquarters, Sacramento, CA.
Re-use / Mixed-Use of 25,000 SF 1947 warehouse / factory with
Exterior modifications. Program called for meeting rooms, shop,
museum, open office area, reproduction, storage, offices, as well as on
site landscaping and parking. Worked as Project Architect / Designer on

15. The Goleman Library Modernization at the Heart of the San
Joaquin Delta College campus in Stockton, CA, involved
abatement and an almost complete gutting of the existing 58,000
SF structure, interior as well as exterior, to make it a building better
suited to the 21st century in terms of Technology and Architecture.
Job Captain and CA for SKW, 2008-2010.
