AI: From pipe-dream to science? Preview slides for a SXSW 2013 interactive proposal. For the last decade, it used to be hard to believe that AI was around the corner. You had to delve into academic work with an unhealthy level of optimism. But given recent industry efforts like IBM Watson, Apple’s Siri, and Google’s robot driven-cars, even non-expert observers and stony cynics must think twice before they chuckle about artificial intelligence. And recent scientific work is even more promising. Great. So are we getting AI or what? In this session, I’ll begin by discussing the state-of-the-art of AI in industry. Next, we’ll discuss cool new *rigorous* scientific research in AI, covering the major areas like language-processing, vision, and robotics. These results haven't made it into industry yet, but it's only a matter of time. The audience will learn about new results that could be deployed in industry in the next few years. Based upon these results, I will end by making predictions about ways that AI-applications will be in the hands of consumers real soon now.
