1. Creative writing portfolio assignment
The Portfolio is worth 200 points or 20% of your final grade.
Creative Writing Portfolio Assignment Description
Overview: A “portfolio” is a set of pieces of creative work selected by a student
to display his or her skills and potential. The purpose of the portfolio is to
present work that you have developed throughout the semester. The portfolio is
your opportunity to show your creative growth via revised versions of your
writing. The portfolio should demonstrate your knowledge of terms and skills
discussed in the course. It should also reflect the process you underwent in
revising your work based on both instructor and peer feedback.
Content Options
• Submit one story between 12 and 25 pages and two poems. (Two Haiku = one
poem)
• Submit one story between 9 and 12 pages and three poems.
• Submit two stories, neither of which is longer than 9 pages but combined are
at least 12 pages, and two poems.
Requirements
• Submit at least one entry to the Red Wheelbarrow.
Grading
60% of your grade will be based on the quality of your revised and developed
work. Evidence of significant effort in integrating the strategies and skills we
learned in class will result in an A grade. Evidence of a perfunctory commitment
to these components but completion of all of them will result in a B. Incomplete
portfolios will receive a C or below depending on what’s missing. The other 40%
of your grade will consist of your creativity and dedication. Here, in addition to
effort as well as evidence of revision and editing in the first portion of your
portfolio, I am looking for evidence of ambition and imagination and finesse of
execution/presentation. For example, a portfolio that demonstrates a range of
skills (for example, multiple genre fiction or a variety of poetic forms) generally
shows a greater commitment to learning and demonstrating the skills the course
is meant to help you develop.
Due Date
• Your portfolio is due before the beginning of our “final” meeting.
• Submit one word document, saved as your last name and “portfolio.” For
example “Palmore Portfolio.”
