Imperialism Europeans exerted influence over the economic, political, and social lives of people they colonized. Economic Competition Demand for raw materials and new markets spurs a search for colonies. Capitalism caused imperialism. Europeans control trade in the colonies and set up dependent cash-crop economies. Christianization Christianity is spread to Africa, India, and Asia.

16. Annexation of Hawaii The U.S. wanted Hawaii for 3 reasons: 1. Good soil to grow sugar cane. 2. Good harbor for a naval base. (Pearl) 3. Good stopping point for ships going to Asia. After some political persuasion, the U.S. got Hawaii. The U.S. finally annexed Hawaii in 1898 and it became the 50th state in 1959. Queen Liliuokalani was the last reigning ruler of the Hawaiian Islands.
22. Many historians say that before the late 1800’s we had always been “isolationists.” But were we really? Was this new imperialism simply an extension of what we had just done to all of North America?
