Welcome to this presentation, Leadership for Independents. In this presentation, we will share with you, the three key steps in taking your leadership to the next level. This presentation is created by Dr. John Kenworthy. Your host. And the Chief Coaching Officer for the GAINMORE Advantage Leadership Toolbox.
I will be taking you through the 3 steps to gain your leadership advantage.Creating a vision of your future.Whats better today? And.Do unto others. Then I will share with you about changing attitudes.A brief look at leadership paradigms, and finally.Your choice.
Do you have a vision for your future?Think about this for a moment.Would you set off in your car to drive to your destination without knowing where your destination was?If you do. Would you be able to find your destination? And if you did arrive at your destination. How would you know that you had arrived?Thats right. You would see it. The real picture you see with your eyes, matches the picture in your mind. Setting goals with a vision helps you know what the future looks like. Can you imagine playing a game of football without knowing what the goal looked like? How would you score? When you set your future goals. It is insufficient to just state what your goal is. You need to develop a clear, rich media picture of your goal. Include as many of your physical senses as you can in your picture. Your mind is not limited like this computer program. Think of your own goal for a moment…What does it look like? What will you see! when you have achieved your goal? What sounds can you hear?Achieving any goal is accompanied by sounds. A crowd cheering at a football match when a goal is scored. Someone telling you, well done! Great job! Feelings. What does it feel like when you have achieved your goal?Does it make you happy? What does happy feel like? For you…And there are smells too.Is there a smell that accompanies the achievement of your goal? Some people think this is odd. But it is not at all strange. What is the sweet smell of success? For you.Perhaps you will celebrate with a delicious meal. Your favorite meal. And what about taste. What will you taste when you achieve your goal? Many people say things like, the taste of victory.Perhaps, you will taste a glass of champagne. You have five senses.A clear vision of your goal is rich in all five senses. The clearer the picture of your goal in your mind. The more you will be pulled towards achieving it.
Whats better today? If I were to meet you in person, you might greet me saying, Hello, how are you? Or, How do you do. If you did. I might respond to your question. Many people do. But I would say something like this:Oh, hello. I am OK I guess. After all I am just a computer program inside a machine so I don’t really know what I should feel like. I know, amazing! And you thought I was a real person. But I am just a little program made up of bits and bytes. I was woken up this morning and forced to work. I had to find a few bits of myself all over the hard disk and, well I think you get the idea. When you greet someone with, how are you. Beware, they might actually tell you!Try this instead. The next person you meet. Say, Whats better today? At first, they will appear shocked and surprised. They may even ask you, what do you mean?Just repeat to them. Whats better today? It will make them think about what is better.Keep this up. People will become used to you saying it. You can use it in emails too. Use it when answering the phone. People may think that you are strange to start with, but, as you will quickly discover. When people are asked, whats better today? They have to think about what is better! Slowly and surely, you and they, will become more and more positive. You, and they, will constantly seek what is better about each and every day. Focus on the good. Focus on what you have learned. Focus on what is better. Now that, is a positive attitude.
Our third key step is, do unto others. If you want to be treated well. You need to treat others well.It is a human trait to respond in kind. When someone shouts at you, the first instinctive reaction is to raise your own voice in response. If you are a leader. Even if you are independent in your work, you will have some leadership responsibility. Even if it is only to lead yourself. You probably also have clients, suppliers, maybe colleagues. You interact with other people. If you treat them with respect, they will treat you with respect. It may take time for them. It may be difficult for them. Remember, everyone has a history. People may not remember all the good things you have done for them. They may not recall the kind words. But they never forget the harsh words, or the unpleasant things you did.We all have, at some point in our lives, said something we regret saying. A knee jerk reaction. An unkind thought followed quickly by an unkind word.Words are our most powerful weapon. They can be used to harm or they can be used to heal. What was that? You say that there are times when some people need to be shouted at?No, thats not correct. They do not need to be shouted at. It is you, you need to shout to get them to do something because they have not yet seen the great leader that you are becoming. Communication is the response you get. If you ask someone nicely to do something and they do not. That is the response to your communication. They do not have a problem. You, you have the problem. Learn how to communicate with them to get the response you, and they, desire.Accept the responsibility to do unto others as you want them to do unto you. Keep at it. This can happen instantly, or it can take time. Thats OK. Just do it for today. And each day is just another today.
Our three key steps are:Create a clear, rich picture of our goal.Ask yourself and everyone that you meet, whats better today? And thirdly, do unto others. Treat everyone with the respect you would like.Changing attitudes is easy. It is a decision.Who would you rather deal with?Mr. Grumpy?Whose goal is to have a good time. Without concern for anyone else. Whose attitude is, well, mostly unpleasant.Who tries to influence you simply through physical power.Or perhaps you would prefer, Mr. Focus. He has a goal to win. A very clear, rich picture of each and every goal. He is willing to share his vision with you, and he is willing for you to be a part of his vision. His attitude is to ask every day, how can I improve? He likes to influence you by asking, how can I help you?Your choice.Which one would you rather be?
Aptitude plus attitude equals altitude. When we begin our careers, we all start as enthusiastic beginners. We go to business school, learn on the job and we gradually develop competence. The technical aptitude to do our job. But, it is our attitude that determines our altitude. To learn how to be better as a manager and as a leader requires both. Our aptitude, and our attitude.
In our research, we have identified nine paradigms of leadership. These fit over the same development matrix about aptitude and attitude. We all start as clumsy leaders. We have neither the technical competency to do leadership, nor do we have the leadership advantage. The right mindset, attitude, approach, all those soft skills and the emotional intelligence we need to be a good leader. Some people do not want to do much in their leadership role. I am sure that you have at least one in your company. They are technically incompetent. Yet, they seem to get promoted. They connect with the right people. They become cunning leaders.Other leaders develop their mindset and advantage deliberately because they know that they do not have the technical competency. Often, they also do not desire to be technically good leaders. They enjoy the limelight. They fill their own weak areas with good people, spending their own time being the star of the show. The show offs of the business world.Other leaders do not concentrate at all on developing their mind set. They learn how to do leadership. They develop competence in all the things they have to do as a manager or leader in their company. When things do not go as planned though, they begin to shout, scream, cuss and swear. They blame everyone else. It is never, ever their fault. They are coarse leaders. Many leaders find a balance. Technically they can do the leadership stuff they need to do, most of it anyway. And, they have a reasonable attitude. But they are always fighting for balance, like a conjuror with many balls in the air, a rabbit under the hat and a bunch of flowers hidden in each pocket. Then, at this mid-level of competence, we have the conductors. Knowing that they lack technical skills, they draw others to do the things they know that they cannot. These are the good team leaders. They conduct everyone as though an orchestra. Each section has specialisms. The conductors job is keeping everyone in harmony. Some leaders have developed incredible technical competence. They do their job very very well. Most of these leaders have a single, clear desire. To win. To conquer anyone who gets in their path. They will drive the longest drive on the golf course. In business, these leaders find the client, sell the product, make it, deliver it, take the money. And all of this will be faster than anyone else. No one else can do the job as well as they can. If you do. You will be crushed.Conjurors who specialize in balancing and succeed, often become the craftsman leader. They excel at really tricky problems. They love what they do. When they have finished something, they invite you to inspect the fine work. They highlight every intricate detail. And, they enjoy the work of others. Always happy to share tips or ideas. Finally, the chess players. Many leaders aspire to this paradigm. These are the strategists. They are technically more than able. They have the right mindset, focus, a clear vision and goal. The right attitude. They treat others with respect, always. Rarely, does the chess player brag about his or her achievements. They prefer to praise their team.
Here are some examples of golfers and well known leaders who typify the paradigm.Bubba Watson and Maggie Thatcher are excellent examples of the conqueror.Nick Faldo and Gordon Bethune. Both have developed into craftsman leaders. Our Chess Players. Well Tiger Woods is the most excellent example from the world of golf. And Jack Welch for leadership.Lets look at conjurors. SeveBalesteros. Fantastic and magical conjuror golfer. And Disney’s Eisner as a conjuror leader.Conductors. Monty for the golfers I think. And AutodesksBartz – though some may disagree. What about crass leaders?Well, for golfers, I think John Daley. Not the most elegant player but he can smack a ball, or a wife, a long way. From UK politics, I’d give this paradigm to John Prescott.Cunning? On the golf side, I think Michelle Wei. She lures the male dominated sport into a false sense of security by competing directly with the men, then takes their money. From the world of politics, Vladimir Putin. I’m convinced he is cunning. What about clumsy? I can’t think of famous clumsy golfers. I guess you won’t be famous if you are clumsy.Oh, but from politics. George Dubya. He has to be the clumsiest leader of all time.
Which paradigm is yours? You want to be a conqueror like Maggie Thatcher?A Cavalier like Sir Richard Branson?Where are you now, and where do you want to be?
To improve your leadership means that you need to develop your technical leadership skills. How to do, leadership. And, critically for most leaders, develop your leadership advantage. Thats what this program is all about. The three key steps here, will help you move your leadership to the right hand side. The way you influence others, show people that you genuinely care, for them.Keeping and sharing a positive attitude. One very simple way is to ask everyone you greet, whats better today? And, a clear goal. A rich picture in all five sense of your future goals. This will pull you towards achieveing it.
If you want to change. You have to choose to do so.Change is uncomfortable.Even the smallest change is uncomfortable.Lets use a real example. Please follow my instructions. As you sit there watching and listening to this presentation. Please cross your arms.Sit there for a while feeling how comfortable you are.Now. Change the way you cross your arms. Instead of left over right, make it right over left. Inside out to outside in.Whoa! That’s right. Now, how does it feel? Not so comfortable right? You know, that if you made sure that you always sat with your arms crossed in this new way. Eventually, it would become comfortable. It takes time and practice. And perseverance. Any change is uncomfortable, at first.Accept this fact. Choose to change and choose to persevere with the change.
Even Tiger Woods. Arguably, the worlds greatest golfer ever. Has changed. He has changed fundamental things. Like his swing. In 1997. He was a young, up and coming golfer. Already winning PGA tournaments. So, what does Tiger do? He changes his swing. For the next year, his performance drops. His performance is worse than before he changed. But, he persevered. By 2000, Tiger was the world number 1 golfer. He was dominating the sport. He stayed at the top of golf for another 3 years. Then, right at the very top of his game. A time when he was better than anyone else in the entire world. He changed again. His performance dropped again. He had fewer PGA wins than he had in 1997.Two years later, he is not just back on top of golf. He is better than before. If he is at the top of the game. The best in the world. Why would he change?Tigers response to that question is, I though I could become better.
It’s your choice. These are just the first three, key steps to becoming a better leader.Have a clear vision for your goal.Always persist with a positive attitude. Ask everyone you meet or interact with. Whats better today? And, genuinely care for others and influence them to improve. They, in turn, will be helping you improve as a leader by allowing you to help them improve. Win win.Remember. Change is uncomfortable, at first. Keep on keeping on. Persevere.Your better leader will emerge tomorrow, when you persevere today.
