The Fight Against AIDS and
          Famine in Africa
HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa
• The rate of HIV/AIDS infection in Sub-Saharan
Africa is among the highest in the world.
• A poor health care system, poverty, ignorance
about prevention, and lack of government
organization all play a vital role in the spread of
  HIV/AIDS in Africa
• Many of the children of adults who are infected
  with AIDS become orphans
• The antiretroviral drugs (AVTs) are too expensive
for the average African infected with HIV
HIV/AIDS crisis cont’d
• Zimbabwe has one of the highest
  HIV/AIDS rates in Africa
• In Nigeria, the government is working hard
to educate the people and make treatment
  available during the HIV/AIDS crisis
• In Botswana, the government has
mounted the most effective responses to
the disease by using diamond wealth to
  provide education and prevention training.
Famine in Africa
• Many African countries face famine today
because of climate changes, political conflict
which disrupts farming, disease, and poorly
  organized corrupt governments.
• In Angola, a civil war contributed to famine.
• In southern Sudan, millions of people rely on
international organizations to get food and
  avoid starvation.
