Dear Judges:
My name is Josh Smith and I love working with animals and that is why I decide to
volunteer at a horse rescue barn in Forsyth County. I love all animals but I wanted to also
tackle my fear of horses and learn how to work with the ones who have had rough lives
and have to have special care. When I decided to do this, I immediately went and meet
my project facilitator and began to learn about these horses. The job was going to be hard
because of the care you have to show them and the things you have to learn. I knew this
is what I wanted to do and once I started doing it I loved it more and more.
Then I started to think about how I was going to represent my work in a final product. I
then came up with idea of doing a scrapbook. When I came up with this idea, I planned to
put pictures of me working with these horses and learning how to care for them. This
goes with my research paper because I wanted to learn how to care for abused horses and
learn about their cases. My scrapbook will also display me doing chores, which is also
what you have to do while taking care of any horse, but with these horses you have to
learn what they are allergic to and what kind of food they can eat so it can get confusing.
I wanted to open my own rescue center or become a vet and work with animals because
that is my passion. By doing this project I learned a lot about horses and figured out how
to care for their cases of abuse. This has taught me that caring for horses is a lot harder
than I thought. These horses have certain horses they can be with, and certain foods they
can eat and certain things you can wash them with. I don’t think that I am going to pursue
owning my own rescue center because of the work it takes to run a place like this and it
also taught me I couldn’t be a vet because of how awful some of the cases of abuse are.
By doing this project has taught me a lot. I know that caring for these horses is more
work than I can handle. By doing this project I have discovered that I would rather go to
school to be a pharmacist. I will purse that and learn this summer by doing internships.
This project taught me a lot about horses and about myself.
Sincerely,
