Introduction

 The H(app)athon Workshop 3
The H(app)athon Project seeks to IMAGINE a world where the GDP can be replaced by
a more holistic vision of value measured by the Happiness Indicators growing in
popularity around the world. The H(app)athon Workshop is designed to let attendees
become collaborators in our work to help DEFINE and BUILD this future world. 4
The Basics
The H(app)athon Workshop is split into four parts:

• A Welcome/Introduction by the Event Host who plays the H(app)athon Project videos and explains the
    goals of the evening.

• Presentations by expert speakers who introduce the themes of the H(app)athon Project to attendees.

• An interactive Workshop (or game) that lets attendees use their newfound understanding of H(app)athon
themes to try and help the fake country of Eudaimonia.

• Presentations by representatives from each breakout group of attendees. These ideas will be videotaped
and placed on the H(app)athon website (as well as partner websites). The videos will form a library of
qualitative data or inspiration to help demonstrate how the world could look when driven by well-being
    or happiness versus wealth.

                                           The H(app)athon Workshop 5

The Trends
The H(app)athon Project focuses on a few central trends. It’s the combination of these trends
that we see forming the backdrop of our work. The trends are:
• Quantified Self – The use of hardware or methodologies to measure one’s behavior.

• The Internet of Things – Sensors tracking objects or people that also involve algorithms.

• Happiness Indicators – Measures like Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness that incorporate
multiple, quantifiable metrics to understand and improve citizen’s well-being, quality of
  life, or happiness.

• Positive Psychology and Subjective Well-Being – The study and science around happiness has
grown enormously over the past ten years. Metrics around these factors are not just
“squishy” but can help to determine policy and positive change

                                       The H(app)athon Workshop 7
Resources

The H(app)athon Project Committee can be made available to Skype into any
H(app)athon Workshop to cover these expert topics as needed. Likewise, the
Committee has prepared videos on these subjects any approved H(app)athon
Workshop Event can play to inform their attendees of these trends and
adequately prepare them for the Interactive Workshop. Videos are available at
www.happathon.com.

To inquire about the best expert/video for your event, please email:
john@happathon.com.

The Interactive Workshop

                      The H(app)athon Workshop 9
We have created a script with step-by-step instructions and sample copy to read for the Host of
a H(app)athon Project Workshop. This also contains the body of the presentation you should
use when hosting your workshop, sample slides to send to your speakers, and full instructions
for the game:

You can download that presentation and customize at the URL below. This presentation also
includes instructions on what to do after your Workshop (send videos, photos, etc):
http://www.slideshare.net/johnchavens/happathon-project-host-toolkit

You will also need to print up and pass out Worksheets we have created for you at the URL
below. You only need to print up one of these for each of your small groups:

                                      The H(app)athon Workshop 10
Running the Workshop

                       The H(app)athon Workshop 11
Requests:
To run an official H(app)athon Workshop:
• You must be approved by the H(app)athon Committee. This helps us maintain our Vision, branding, and
make sure you get the resources you need. We also ask you have a Committee member in
attendance, either live or via Skype so they can be a resource for your event. Email
    john@happathon.com for details.
• We ask that you follow this framework of Expert Presentations followed by the Workshop. We’re pretty
flexible on how to implement both of these portions of the Workshop, but the goal is pretty simple –
teach people about these trends and then have them create ideas where they realize they’re part of the
    Solution.
• We ask that you videotape main presentations and the ideas presented by all workout groups. The library
of all H(app)athon content serves two purposes – it lets future events utilize existing videos, while also
building a qualitative data set that informs the overall work of the Project. Please make sure to announce
you’re videotaping the event so presenters know their images will be used on the site.
• We ask that you play the two official H(app)athon Project videos (about twenty minutes) at the beginning
of your event. This lets attendees know they’re part of a global and ongoing Project while cementing our
    Vision and core values.

                                            The H(app)athon Workshop 12
Requirements

What you’ll Need to Run the H(app)athon Workshop:

• A Venue. Note your event can be for 10 people or 400, if you have enough facilitators for
small groups. The H(app)athon Committee cannot provide funding for venue rental at this
time, but do offer in-kind sponsorships for organizations running or hosting events. Please
  email john@happathon.com for details.

• A screen and projector. We’ll provide you with a branded presentation to insert your speaker
  and other information.

• Facilitators. A good ratio is one facilitator for groups of 6-8 people. More than 8 people can
get unwieldy. We recommend meeting with your facilitators before the event to do the
Workshop/play the game by yourselves so you can best run it for attendees.

                                       The H(app)athon Workshop 13
Requirements

What you’ll Need to Run the H(app)athon Workshop:

• Insurance. H(app)athon cannot be held responsible for any accidents, etc., that happen during officially
sanctioned events. By agreeing to use H(app)athon content and materials, you are also accepting liability
for what happens at your location, as we cannot be held responsible for events our Committee is not
    directly running.

• Sponsors. The H(app)athon Project Committee cannot provide sponsorship for events you run. You are
welcome to get in touch and we can see if we have resources available, but we recommend you find in-
kind sponsors to donate the venue, food, drinks, and other items you may need. Note you cannot charge
for your events – it is a high priority for the Project that people attend workshops and be able to benefit
from our Surveys and other work for free. However, if you get sponsors and there are overages those
fees belong to you/your organization, unless you want to share. 

                                             The H(app)athon Workshop 14
Frequently Asked Questions

                      The H(app)athon Workshop 15
What is the best length and detailed schedule for an event?
Three hours is really the optimum timeframe for the Worskshop. Here’s a typical “run of show” that we recommend
for an evening event:

• 6:00 – 6:30: Networking, food/drink
• 6:30 – 6:40: Welcome/introduction to the evening/Play H(app)athon Project Video
• 6:40 – 7:40: Expert speakers:
      • Note – we recommend the ’10 and 2’ rule regarding these presentations – meaning, for every 10 to 15
minutes of a speaker's presentation, allow audience members approximately 2 to 3 minutes to discuss
what they just heard with their neighbors, or to make notes to themselves, before proceeding with the
next speaker. Also, you don’t need to do an hour if people are itching to get to brainstorming. 20-30
minutes may be enough to prep people with the ideas the Project is focused on.
• 7:40 – 7:50: Interactive Workshop Explained
• 7:50 – 8:00: Break into small groups (6-8 people provided with white boards, paper, or legal pads, and facilitators
get worksheets (see slide at the end of this presentation).
• 8:00 – 8:30: Groups work on their Ideas
• 8:30 – 8:35: Groups finalize ideas
• 8:35 – 8:50: Groups present ideas (remind attendees they’re being videotaped).
• 8:50 – 9:00: Host provides follow-up for Attendees: Take the H(app)athon Survey, Host their Own
    Event, download the H(app)athon App.

                                                The H(app)athon Workshop 16
What if I want to do a H(app)athon Workshop in less than three hours?
We have a few options:

• First, after being approved to do your modified event, you can ask attendees to watch Expert videos
before they attend your H(app)athon Workshop. This means you can focus on the Interactive Workshop
portion of the event, but must still videotape attendee’s Ideas.

• If you’re at a booth during a conference or other event where you won’t be able to have speakers or an
Interactive Workshop, you can ask people the simple question, “How do you know when you’re happy?”
and record their response (with their permission). If people use the Tout App (tout.com), they can also
record their thoughts to these questions on Tout. For all responses, please make sure to tag/ask people
to tag their videos with the #happathon hashtag.

Why did you choose a fake country for the Workshop instead of a real place?
We may use data from actual countries for our Hackathons, and we’ll incorporate real-world data for our
final App. But for these awareness-building events, we want people to not be caught up in local politics or
issues and think in as broad and global way as possible.

                                            The H(app)athon Workshop 17
What if people don’t understand all the Technology?
No worries. The mobile technologies listed are there to provide specifics for your brainstorming. The main
goal for your facilitators should be to push people to really imagine how these fictional people can be
helped.

What if a Group isn’t giving any answers?
Try asking these questions to get people going:

     • Have you thought about metrics like these before? (We want to teach attendees about Happiness
Indicators like Gross National Happiness – note, they may not be familiar with them so it’s okay
to tell them countries like Bhutan and the UK are already using metrics like the ones listed in our
           game).

     • The people in Eudaimonia have strong civic engagement. How can we leverage that?

     • What type of solution can you imagine if we didn’t have to focus on money so much?

     • Real world examples. Have you heard of organizations creating Apps/solutions like these?

                                            The H(app)athon Workshop 18

The H(app)athon Workshop Toolkit

  • 1.
  • 2. Introduction Page 3 The Interactive Workshop Page 9 Running the Workshop Page 10 2
  • 4. The H(app)athon Project seeks to IMAGINE a world where the GDP can be replaced by a more holistic vision of value measured by the Happiness Indicators growing in popularity around the world. The H(app)athon Workshop is designed to let attendees become collaborators in our work to help DEFINE and BUILD this future world. 4
  • 5. The Basics The H(app)athon Workshop is split into four parts: • A Welcome/Introduction by the Event Host who plays the H(app)athon Project videos and explains the goals of the evening. • Presentations by expert speakers who introduce the themes of the H(app)athon Project to attendees. • An interactive Workshop (or game) that lets attendees use their newfound understanding of H(app)athon themes to try and help the fake country of Eudaimonia. • Presentations by representatives from each breakout group of attendees. These ideas will be videotaped and placed on the H(app)athon website (as well as partner websites). The videos will form a library of qualitative data or inspiration to help demonstrate how the world could look when driven by well-being or happiness versus wealth. The H(app)athon Workshop 5

  • 7. The Trends The H(app)athon Project focuses on a few central trends. It’s the combination of these trends that we see forming the backdrop of our work. The trends are: • Quantified Self – The use of hardware or methodologies to measure one’s behavior. • The Internet of Things – Sensors tracking objects or people that also involve algorithms. • Happiness Indicators – Measures like Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness that incorporate multiple, quantifiable metrics to understand and improve citizen’s well-being, quality of life, or happiness. • Positive Psychology and Subjective Well-Being – The study and science around happiness has grown enormously over the past ten years. Metrics around these factors are not just “squishy” but can help to determine policy and positive change The H(app)athon Workshop 7
  • 8. Resources The H(app)athon Project Committee can be made available to Skype into any H(app)athon Workshop to cover these expert topics as needed. Likewise, the Committee has prepared videos on these subjects any approved H(app)athon Workshop Event can play to inform their attendees of these trends and adequately prepare them for the Interactive Workshop. Videos are available at www.happathon.com. To inquire about the best expert/video for your event, please email: john@happathon.com. The H(app)athon Workshop 8

  • 10. We have created a script with step-by-step instructions and sample copy to read for the Host of a H(app)athon Project Workshop. This also contains the body of the presentation you should use when hosting your workshop, sample slides to send to your speakers, and full instructions for the game: You can download that presentation and customize at the URL below. This presentation also includes instructions on what to do after your Workshop (send videos, photos, etc): http://www.slideshare.net/johnchavens/happathon-project-host-toolkit You will also need to print up and pass out Worksheets we have created for you at the URL below. You only need to print up one of these for each of your small groups: http://www.slideshare.net/johnchavens/happathon-project-eudaimonia-worksheet The H(app)athon Workshop 10
  • 11. Running the Workshop The H(app)athon Workshop 11
  • 12. Requests: To run an official H(app)athon Workshop: • You must be approved by the H(app)athon Committee. This helps us maintain our Vision, branding, and make sure you get the resources you need. We also ask you have a Committee member in attendance, either live or via Skype so they can be a resource for your event. Email john@happathon.com for details. • We ask that you follow this framework of Expert Presentations followed by the Workshop. We’re pretty flexible on how to implement both of these portions of the Workshop, but the goal is pretty simple – teach people about these trends and then have them create ideas where they realize they’re part of the Solution. • We ask that you videotape main presentations and the ideas presented by all workout groups. The library of all H(app)athon content serves two purposes – it lets future events utilize existing videos, while also building a qualitative data set that informs the overall work of the Project. Please make sure to announce you’re videotaping the event so presenters know their images will be used on the site. • We ask that you play the two official H(app)athon Project videos (about twenty minutes) at the beginning of your event. This lets attendees know they’re part of a global and ongoing Project while cementing our Vision and core values. The H(app)athon Workshop 12
  • 13. Requirements What you’ll Need to Run the H(app)athon Workshop: • A Venue. Note your event can be for 10 people or 400, if you have enough facilitators for small groups. The H(app)athon Committee cannot provide funding for venue rental at this time, but do offer in-kind sponsorships for organizations running or hosting events. Please email john@happathon.com for details. • A screen and projector. We’ll provide you with a branded presentation to insert your speaker and other information. • Facilitators. A good ratio is one facilitator for groups of 6-8 people. More than 8 people can get unwieldy. We recommend meeting with your facilitators before the event to do the Workshop/play the game by yourselves so you can best run it for attendees. The H(app)athon Workshop 13
  • 14. Requirements What you’ll Need to Run the H(app)athon Workshop: • Insurance. H(app)athon cannot be held responsible for any accidents, etc., that happen during officially sanctioned events. By agreeing to use H(app)athon content and materials, you are also accepting liability for what happens at your location, as we cannot be held responsible for events our Committee is not directly running. • Sponsors. The H(app)athon Project Committee cannot provide sponsorship for events you run. You are welcome to get in touch and we can see if we have resources available, but we recommend you find in- kind sponsors to donate the venue, food, drinks, and other items you may need. Note you cannot charge for your events – it is a high priority for the Project that people attend workshops and be able to benefit from our Surveys and other work for free. However, if you get sponsors and there are overages those fees belong to you/your organization, unless you want to share.  The H(app)athon Workshop 14
  • 15. Frequently Asked Questions The H(app)athon Workshop 15
  • 16. What is the best length and detailed schedule for an event? Three hours is really the optimum timeframe for the Worskshop. Here’s a typical “run of show” that we recommend for an evening event: • 6:00 – 6:30: Networking, food/drink • 6:30 – 6:40: Welcome/introduction to the evening/Play H(app)athon Project Video • 6:40 – 7:40: Expert speakers: • Note – we recommend the ’10 and 2’ rule regarding these presentations – meaning, for every 10 to 15 minutes of a speaker's presentation, allow audience members approximately 2 to 3 minutes to discuss what they just heard with their neighbors, or to make notes to themselves, before proceeding with the next speaker. Also, you don’t need to do an hour if people are itching to get to brainstorming. 20-30 minutes may be enough to prep people with the ideas the Project is focused on. • 7:40 – 7:50: Interactive Workshop Explained • 7:50 – 8:00: Break into small groups (6-8 people provided with white boards, paper, or legal pads, and facilitators get worksheets (see slide at the end of this presentation). • 8:00 – 8:30: Groups work on their Ideas • 8:30 – 8:35: Groups finalize ideas • 8:35 – 8:50: Groups present ideas (remind attendees they’re being videotaped). • 8:50 – 9:00: Host provides follow-up for Attendees: Take the H(app)athon Survey, Host their Own Event, download the H(app)athon App. The H(app)athon Workshop 16
  • 17. What if I want to do a H(app)athon Workshop in less than three hours? We have a few options: • First, after being approved to do your modified event, you can ask attendees to watch Expert videos before they attend your H(app)athon Workshop. This means you can focus on the Interactive Workshop portion of the event, but must still videotape attendee’s Ideas. • If you’re at a booth during a conference or other event where you won’t be able to have speakers or an Interactive Workshop, you can ask people the simple question, “How do you know when you’re happy?” and record their response (with their permission). If people use the Tout App (tout.com), they can also record their thoughts to these questions on Tout. For all responses, please make sure to tag/ask people to tag their videos with the #happathon hashtag. Why did you choose a fake country for the Workshop instead of a real place? We may use data from actual countries for our Hackathons, and we’ll incorporate real-world data for our final App. But for these awareness-building events, we want people to not be caught up in local politics or issues and think in as broad and global way as possible. The H(app)athon Workshop 17
  • 18. What if people don’t understand all the Technology? No worries. The mobile technologies listed are there to provide specifics for your brainstorming. The main goal for your facilitators should be to push people to really imagine how these fictional people can be helped. What if a Group isn’t giving any answers? Try asking these questions to get people going: • Have you thought about metrics like these before? (We want to teach attendees about Happiness Indicators like Gross National Happiness – note, they may not be familiar with them so it’s okay to tell them countries like Bhutan and the UK are already using metrics like the ones listed in our game). • The people in Eudaimonia have strong civic engagement. How can we leverage that? • What type of solution can you imagine if we didn’t have to focus on money so much? • Real world examples. Have you heard of organizations creating Apps/solutions like these? The H(app)athon Workshop 18
