This document discusses design for sustainable behavior through three tools: [1] understanding user behavior and context, [2] influencing attitudes and habits, and [3] modifying environments. Understanding how attitudes, habits, and contexts determine behavior allows designers to influence behavior positively. Design can make sustainable choices easier by removing positive reinforcement of unsustainable behaviors or creating negative reinforcement. The overall goal is to modify environments to encourage movement toward preferred, sustainable directions.
