I identify some of the different ways in which various groups of people experience information and information literacy (IL) in the 21st Century, with reference to 21st Century research. CHAPTER 2 Teaching the Ethical Use of Information as an MIL Skill B. Schultz-Jones University of North Texas, Denton, TX, United States 2.1 INTRODUCTION What do educators need to know about teaching the ethical use of information? This chapter deals with teaching the ethical use of information as a media and information literacy (MIL) skill. To be able to use informa- tion ethically, educators and students must equip themselves with principles that can be applied as information literacy skills to our information land- scape. The concepts of ethics and information literacy are examined and the connection between the learning environment and the adoption of ethi- cal information literacy skills is discussed. The teaching frameworks of informed learning (Bruce, 2008) and guided inquiry (Kuhlthau, Maniotes, & Caspari, 2012) are explored, along with learning scenarios, as a means of orchestrating the adoption of ethical information literacy behavior. 2.2 ETHICS The term ethics occurs in many examples of standards and guidelines that address the acquisition, use, dissemination, and impact of information. The term is used as a simple way to highlight the recognition of right and wrong conduct in relation to handling information and as a more complex concept that identifies a principled approach to dealing with increasingly sophisticated information technology and its ever-changing global environ- ment. As educators we have the opportunity to address the principles and standards needed to make wise decisions when dealing with the complexity of information issues of our 21st century. We recognize that the values of a community may vary across cultures. However, in a complex information environment, there are principles and values that we need to establish and reinforce. The educational community fosters engagement with these values in our learning environment and provides the means to learn and understand ethical information literacy behavior. 13 Media and Information Literacy in Higher Education. In the United States, the concept of information literacy has evolved from a simple definition that referred to the approach of using reference resources to find information, through a recognition by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) of the American Library Association (ALA, 1989) definition that being information-literate meant being equipped with a set of abilities requiring individuals to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and effectively use the needed information” (ACRL, 2000, p.
