When 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was
shot and killed by George Zimmerman,
the media questioned Martin’s character,
giving Americans reasons to jump to
Zimmerman’s defense. They attacked
Martin explicitly as a “thug” or tacitly with
remarks such as, “Why was Martin
wearing a hoodie if he wasn’t up to no
good?” and, “We can’t judge Zimmerman
because [we] don’t know all the facts.” To
these people, it didn’t matter that an
unarmed teen was dead.
