Talk about Web Strategy?
This is no “One Perfect Journey(tm)” (change this to it’s not an upward graph?) more like Tube map? Pain of change has bred mistakes (make sure I get in something about the yellow pages) Mention HB&co; WHERE THE MISTAKES HAPPENED??? INDICATE ON DIAGRAM?
A mistake is not a mistake, it’s a learning opportunity Not trying to be twee My harshest critic
- Don’t haul your ass over the coals when you fail - And make sure you find time to pat yourself on the back - my mistake
- The law of averages dictates that we’ll warm to some people more than others - Can’t let fear of what others might say get in your way - mention Twitter workshops etc?
- closely tied to celebrating victories - (Do I need my diagram about mix of skills etc? In location & time?) - Be positive (but not Mr Alpha male Firm Handshake!) - But we’ve got to set a stall out / we can’t be a mystery / a best kept secret (separate slide) - Big price element here as well; let’s look at that later
- the spec is the spec is the spec - A. packaged services (benefit is that they’re shrink wrapped and defined) **extra slide** Daz?
- a prospect or lead is not necessarily the client that you want - bad clients drain you emotionally and they drain you off time & energy to attract and service better clients - Flick knife (invitation to treat) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_v_Bell ...don’t be afraid to fire a client!
- Working for yourself can be lonely - working with smarter, more specialised people - rub shoulders with other business owners - freed up my time
The grand illusion People buy from people People form mental models from the scraps we through out there
- Packages - filter out the tyre kickers - specification (sorry, no Agile here); need to avoid scope creep
You does the work, you earns the money You are selling hours timesheet (& arguments!) ...not always liked by clients (how much?)
Clients like it More task related More risk? Discovery / short order chef Your process is there to help clients and to filter in the good clients
How busy you are... The value to the client The size of their purse How much hand holding you think they’ll need? How much you like/dislike the client How much you like/dislike the job
Good for recurring revenue Bad if you don’t package it properly
“ How much are you looking to invest in this project?” “ Not enough budget; ok, how can we reduce the scope?”
- Time tracking - Working ON the business not IN the business - Contracts (though I do like Andy Clarke’s)
Training (UDEMY), 1-n stuff I see a bright future for website design but we seeing a greater componentisation of the web (Google system? Square space)
