4. PRE-CONSTRUCTION BMPS Pre-Construction BMPs are those BMPs that are utilized during the construction process to prevent /minimize the migration of sediment into stormwater lines, and water bodies.
16. THE NEED FOR MORE RESEARCH The Colorado Stormwater Council has identified that BMP technologies are in a constant state of flux. Furthermore, there are non-traditional BMPs being used by contractors that need to be evaluated in actual field conditions. www.coloradostormwatercouncil.org
17. THE SOLUTION The Colorado Stormwater Council has agreed that an in field BMP study needs to be performed. www.coloradostormwatercouncil.org
18. THE GOAL The goal of this study is to come up with some common sense guidelines that all MS4s can utilize to decide if these non-traditional BMPs are effective. www.coloradostormwatercouncil.org
19. WHERE WE ARE As of today we are in the process of establishing the evaluation criteria. We want to establish what will represent an acceptable BMP and what will not. www.coloradostormwatercouncil.org
20. TIME LINE Time Line of what we want to accomplish January establish criteria February obtain partner MS4s that want to participate March distribute BMPs to partners and Install March thru September evaluate the performance October compile and analyze Data November Publish on CSC Website. www.coloradostormwatercouncil.org
21. GET INVOLVED We want all MS4s in Colorado to get involved in installing these BMPs in one of their projects and evaluating them according to the criteria that will be established. www.coloradostormwatercouncil.org
22. CONTACT INFORMATION If you want to participate please email, snail mail or call: Joel Cantu with the Southeast Metro Stormwater Authority at jcantu@semswa.org Tanna Boisvert with the City of Arvada at Tanna-B@arvada.org
23. THANK YOU Thanks to following companies who have decided to contribute to this study. We are in the process of obtaining commitments from additional suppliers so spread the word.
What are BMPS? BMPs can be divided up into Pre-Construction and Post Construction BMPs. We know what Pre-Construction BMPs are. Post Construction BMPs are those systems in place for water quality purposes. Here is an example of a Nutrient Separator Baffle Box, CDS Unit, and a Filterra Unit.
The purpose of this presentation is to focus on Pre-Construction BMPs. That is the BMPs that need to be installed and maintained before construction begins and throughout the life of the construction process.
For the purposes of this presentation, the definition of Pre-Construction BMPs are…
Pre-Construction BMPs can be categorized down even further into Sediment Control BMPS, Erosion Control BMPs and “Other” BMPs.
Here are some example of non-traditional Inlet BMPs. From Top Right To Left of a Silt Sack, Grate Gattor, Dandy Sack, Gutter Gator, Big Red and Gutter Eel.
Here are examples of Perimeter Control. This is an example of Silt Soxx, Different types of Silt Fence and Erosion Eels.
Here is a typical example of swale BMPs. This is a type of Wattle, Tri-Dike and Snake Bag.
Here are examples of Tracking Control BMPs. This is an example of a Rock Entrance with cattle guards, a wheel wash, vacuum truck, Grizzly Trackout System and a Mud Mat.
As far as Sediment Control. Typically these are divided up into Erosion Control Blanket types of products and Spray on Blanket types of Products.
Other BMPs include Concrete Washouts. Here is a variety of systems.
Here are examples of typical dewatering systems.
These are examples of some common types of BMPs seen around the Colorado Area.
The examples you have seen demonstrate the variety of BMPs available to construction companies today. And there are constantly more products arriving on the market. The CSC has identified a need for non-traditional BMP evaluations.
Colorado Stormwater Council Construction Committee has elected to undertake a BMP in Field Study.
The goal is to come up with some common sense guidelines that all MS4s can utilize in evaluating the appropriateness of these non-traditional BMPs when they are proposed to be used by contractors.
We currently are defining what criteria we will use to evaluate the effectiveness of these non-traditional BMPs.
This is our current self set time-line. We can make minor adjustments if needed.
If you haven’t common to the construction committee meeting your missing out! We strongly urge you to attend and be part of the council.

Thank you to following suppliers who have decide to contribute product for this study.
