Working From Home: Pros and Cons
Asked to choose between coming to office and working from home usually shows a strong bias
towards the comforts of home.
But there are some common pitfalls that can make this alternative style of work unproductive.
Let's look at the pros and cons of working from home –
Advantages of working from home
Commute
According to surveys this is the single most important factor that attracts employees to
telecommute. Cost of living in most tier 1 and tier 2 cities is going through the roof and
affordable housing in the suburbs results in long commutes.
Some employee commutes have been clocked at over three hours, daily! If we assume a 9 hour
shift, commuting to and back from work adds 30% of that time. Simple math would show that if
the employer is flexible, the employee would gladly put in an extra hour to reduce the three hour
commute by working out of his home.

Warming-up Time
How many of us reach the office and immediately get to work? After beating the traffic and
crowds it is understandable if one takes ‘some’ time to settle in and start working. This loss in
efficiency due to tiresome travel can be eliminated if one does not have to travel.
The same applies when people have to wrap up for the day. Preparing to leave the office
generally begins a few minutes before official end of day.
Delays = Bad Day
Work is becoming increasingly stressful and the last thing we need is additional pressure. A
delay in commuting is one such devil, and another is last minute work or meetings that keep you
in the office a little while longer.
Statistics show that if work spills over when one is at home, it is generally accepted without
much resistance.
Disadvantages of working from home
Poor Time Management
It’s true that working out of a virtual office at home is a great time saver, but not many of us
know how to manage the time thus saved. The schedule of going to office and then focusing on
work is automatic when we take up a job, but replicating the same independently requires
significant maturity.
While I’m not saying that we require constant supervision, the environment of being at work is
difficult to achieve in the comforts of one’s living room or study.
Discipline
At the office you would think twice before taking multiple coffee breaks or extended trips to the
water cooler, but at home there is no such restriction. It is very easy to get distracted by the
smallest of excuses to break away from work when at home.
Children, food, personal phone calls, sleep and even television form the major chunk of excuses
that individuals resort to for not giving their 100% when at home.
Boredom
Yes, it can get boring at home. Conversing with colleagues not only widens your horizon on a
variety of topics, but also takes your mind off your personal problems and tensions.
Psychologists confirm that humans need constant interaction to even just maintain sanity!

Telecommuting or working from is essentially a double edged sword and while there are some
great obvious benefits, the pitfalls can prove lethal for one’s career.
A general recommendation would be to use the working from home alternative when the need
arises, but to stay wary of an overdose.
