The Social Media Revolution!
“A good educator can motivate a student. A
great educator creates the environment where
      students can motivate themselves.”
                                                             (Couros, 2012)

“We need, first, to take charge of our own learning, and
next help others take change of their own learning.

We need to move beyond the idea that an education is
something that is provided to us, and toward the idea that
an education is something that we create for ourselves.

It is time, in other words, that we change our attitude
toward learning and the educational system in general.”
                                               ~ Downes, 2010
Social Media in Schools
O Students today have never known a world without
  the Internet.

O Most teachers and parents went to school before
  “clicks and shares”
O Experts argue that blocking students from purposeful
online interaction does more harm than good.
O Some educators and schools strongly advocate that
social media as a way to engage students in
  accessible, personalized learning.

                        http://www.ascd.org/publications/newsletters/policy-priorities/vol17/num04/Executive-Summary-on-Social-Media-in-Schools.aspx
Reasons to Use Social Media in School
      1. Opens the world of education.
          • Breaks down walls and builds relationships with families and community.
          • Parents can view lessons, assignments, homework, newsletters, etc.

      2. Minimizes isolation.
          • Small schools can be connected and the feeling of isolation can dissipate.
          • Ideas and camaraderie can be extended all over the world.

      3. Builds tolerance and understanding of cultural diversity.
           • Having the opportunity to connect with people all over the world breaks
down a lot of barriers and builds understanding.

      4. Amplifies passion.
          • Student who do not feel anyone has similar interests in the classroom,
can make connections outside of a school that support their unique
              individual passions.

      5. It’s free.
            • No costs, simply internet access and technology requirements
                                                                                (Couros, 2012)

Things to consider about using
                Social Media in our Schools
Some things that must be consider for the successful implementation of Social
Media in schools…
   1. Is there transparency with online activity and experiences

   2. Is there a school climate that supports TMEs.

       • “I would try to build a school culture where sharing is just a normal part of what we do and where we
understand the relevance of this global exchange of ideas and information to what we do in the
           classroom” (Richardson, 2010)

   3. Is there a Safety Policy or Code of Conduct for SM use that outlines etiquette and expected
      behaviour

   4. Who is the target audience: teachers, students, parents, or community

   5. Who will have access and are URL’s on website and in newsletters

   6. What is are the ground rules for appropriate responses from interactive entries

   7. Do parents have access and are they aware of what, how, when, & why social media is being
      used?
Leadership Challenges to Introducing
                   Social Media in Schools.
“ There is concern from school administrators and teachers that connecting students online

may have more detrimental effect than benefit — due to inappropriate communication or

content, privacy exploitation or cyberbullying. However, if the correct structures are put in

place and content is monitored, then social media can become a valuable an interactive

teaching tool. “

                                               http://www.zdnet.com/blog/igeneration/ways-to-use-facebook-effectively-in-class/15269
Leadership Challenges to Introducing
                       Social Media in Schools.
Challenges that leaders need to contend with…
O Access concerns
O In house – students, teachers, other staff
     O External – privacy & safety concerns
     O Bandwidth
     O Cost of internet services

O Digital divide & Learning network divide

O Time

O What does global change mean for schools? Education?

O Alignment – within district, province, country, universities – we are reinventing the wheel individually
    instead of collaborating?

O “Outside assessment systems imposed on schools are not making a clear connection between the use of
*social media+ and student learning” (Richardson, 2011, p.9)

                                                                      http://www.techlearning.com/default.aspx?tabid=67&entryid=602
“ In times of change, learners inherit the
earth, while the learned find themselves
beautifully equipped to deal with a world
         that no longer exists”

                                    ~ Hoffer
