- In recent years, the processors inside mobile phones have become much more powerful, to the extent that the Nokia handset I carry around with me nowadays boasts enough computing power to put the Apollo 13 space craft to shame. At the same time, the percentage of mobile phones which include Bluetooth functionality has increased and is trending steadily upwards. So the ability of the mobile phone I carry with me, to store a profile about me and go looking for other phones whose profiles might be interesting to me, is getting better all the time. Although never intended as such, the short-range radio protocol Bluetooth can be used as a beacon to help make introductions between socially curious devices. This is the essence of our value proposition â subscribers sign up in a conventional online database, are delivered a custom application to load on their mobile phones, then can go looking for each other anonymously using their Bluetooth capable mobile devices. We need to make a distinction between active and passive devices. Older devices which do not allow a host application access to the Java API we define as passive. Newer devices which do allow a software application access to the Bluetooth API, we define as active. Given that there is a considerable installed base out there of Bluetooth phones which are passive, we have made our system sufficiently clever, that customers can use our service using either active or passive devices.
