DDL prog – 10 HEIs and 2 FECs focused on institutional approaches to developing digital literacies. 10 professional associations were also involved as benefits realisation partners – getting resources out to their memberships
Key messages around taking a strategic approach to digital literacies development – not just about high-level decision-making at institutional level but grass roots approaches as well.
What do we know about students?
Student confidence is usually ahead of their capability - Diagnostic/audit tools are useful – eg http://bit.ly/learnerquiz
Different types and levels of guidance needed - most learners need some help
Opportunities to learn from peers
Motivated by developing an online professional identity
Tutor practices and course requirements are crucial
Integrate digital literacy into course and study skills
Projects bringing digital literacy / e-Learning staff development within broader umbrella
Communities of practice and ‘digital heroes’
Cardiff – conversation as enablement
Plymouth – successful ‘talking about iPads’ sessions
More lightweight and ‘just in time’ skills support
Digital literacies as part of staff annual performance reviews (Plymouth)
SEDA, working with other prof. associations, have produced a guide to implementing the UKPSF in the digital university
Baseline study found library staff are generally the most supported professionally in digital literacy development
University administrators are important group – work at UCL with teaching administrators
Key role for staff as enabler - let students demonstrate what they can do
The study reviewed existing research and survey evidence from institutions, as well as conducting original interviews and focus groups. Currently in a consultation phase – including Wales event in april – HEA Future Directions conference at Aberystwyth. Focus of the project and crossover with DDL work.
