5. Transfigured Before Them
Mat 17:1-3 ESV And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and
James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by
themselves. (2) And he was transfigured before them, and his face
shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. (3) And
behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
Six or Eight Days?
Luk 9:28 ESV Now about eight days after these
sayings he took with him Peter and John and
James and went up on the mountain to pray.
Six days after the conversation recorded in the last chapter. Luke says,
"about an eight days." About, not exactly. Luke's eight days include the
fractional days at the beginning and end of the day of the conversation
and the day of transfiguration. Matthew's six days are the six complete
days intervening between them. (B.W. Johnson)
6. Transfigured Before Them
Mt. Tabor or
Mt. Hermon
Transfigured?
metamorphoō - Our English word
metamorphosis. “To change into another form, to
transform, to transfigure” (Thayer) Here to
change appearance.
Exo 34:29-30 ESV When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the
two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the
mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he
had been talking with God. (30) Aaron and all the people of Israel saw
Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to
come near him.
7. Transfigured Before Them
Mat 17:2 ESV And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone
like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. (3) And behold,
there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
Heb 1:2-3 ESV But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son,
whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created
the world. (3) He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact
imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his
power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand
of the Majesty on high, ( In Heaven God & Jesus are the light, Rev. 21:23)
Rom 12:1-2 ESV I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of
God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to
God, which is your spiritual worship. (2) Do not be conformed to this
world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing
you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable
and perfect.
Talking with
Moses & Elijah
Luk 9:30-31 ESV And behold, two men were
talking with him, Moses and Elijah, (31) who
appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,
which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
Luk 9:32 ESV Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy
with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the
two men who stood with him.
9. It is Good to Be Here
Luk 9:33 ESV And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to
Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one
for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah"--not knowing what he
said.
Sometimes we speak without thinking
Jas 1:19 ESV Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person
be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
10. Listen to My Son
Mat 17:5 ESV He was still speaking when,
behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a
voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved
Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."
Heb 2:2-4 ESV For since the message declared by
angels proved to be reliable, and every
transgression or disobedience received a just
retribution, (3) how shall we escape if we neglect
such a great salvation? It was declared at first by
the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who
heard, (4) while God also bore witness by signs
and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of
the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
11. Listen to My Son
Mat 17:5 ESV He was still speaking when,
behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a
voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved
Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."
Many great men, but ONLY ONE SON of GOD
Act 4:10-12 ESV let it be known to all of you and to all the
people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead--by
him this man is standing before you well. (11) This Jesus is
the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has
become the cornerstone. (12) And there is salvation in no
one else, for there is no other name under heaven given
among men by which we must be saved."
12. Listen to My Son
Mat 17:6 ESV When the disciples heard this, they
fell on their faces and were terrified.
Php 2:12 ESV Therefore, my beloved, as you
have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my
presence but much more in my absence, work out
your own salvation with fear and trembling,
2Co 5:10-11 ESV For we must all appear before
the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may
receive what is due for what he has done in the
body, whether good or evil. (11) Therefore,
knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade
others…
13. Listen to My Son
Heb 10:26-27 ESV For if we go on sinning
deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the
truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
(27) but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a
fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.
Heb 10:31 ESV It is a fearful thing to fall into the
hands of the living God.
Ecc 12:13-14 ESV The end of the matter; all has
been heard. Fear God and keep his
commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
(14) For God will bring every deed into judgment,
with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
14. Mat 17:7-9 ESV But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and
have no fear." (8) And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one
but Jesus only. (9) And as they were coming down the mountain,
Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man
is raised from the dead."
15. No Fear in Christ
1Jn 4:14-18 ESV And we have seen and testify
that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of
the world. (15) Whoever confesses that Jesus is
the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in
God. (16) So we have come to know and to
believe the love that God has for us. God is love,
and whoever abides in love abides in God, and
God abides in him. (17) By this is love perfected
with us, so that we may have confidence for the
day of judgment, because as he is so also are we
in this world. (18) There is no fear in love, but
perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with
punishment, and whoever fears has not been
perfected in love.
16. Rom 6:3-6 ESV Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized
into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? (4) We were buried
therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was
raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in
newness of life. (5) For if we have been united with him in a death
like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
(6) We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the
body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be
enslaved to sin.
