Apache Software Foundation
The State of the Feather

The ASF
āž” ASF == The Apache Software Foundation
āž” Before the ASF there was ā€œThe Apache Groupā€
āž” But we needed a more formal and legal entity
āž” The ASF was incorporated in 1999
āž” Governed solely by members - 100% member based entity

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License.
The ASF
āž” Non-profit corporation founded in 1999
āž” 501( c )3 public charity
āž” Volunteer organization (The ASF doesnā€™t pay anyone to work
    on Apache projects)
āž” Virtual world-wide organization - Membership of Individuals
āž” Exists to provide the organizational, legal, and financial
support for various OSS projects - let the developers develop

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License.
At the start
āž” There were only 21 members
āž” And 2 ā€œprojectsā€: httpd and Concom
āž” All servers and services were donated

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License.
Today...
āž” We have 432 members...(!)
āž” and 59 emeritus member
āž” >100 TLPs
āž” ~40 Incubator podlings
āž” 32 Labs
āž” 16 in the Attic
āž” Tons of committers (literally)
    āž” (Over 3000 people)

The ASFā€™s Mission
āž” Provide open source software to the public free of charge
āž” Provide a foundation for open, collaborative software
    development projects by supplying hardware,
    communication, and business infrastructure
āž” Create an independent legal entity to which companies and
individuals can donate resources and be assured that those
resources will be used for the public beneļ¬t

The ASFā€™s Mission
āž” Provide a means for individual volunteers to be sheltered
from legal suits directed at the Foundationā€™s projects
āž” Protect the ā€˜Apacheā€™ brand, as applied to its software
products, from being abused by other organizations
āž” Provide legal and technical infrastructure for open
source software development and to perform appropriate
    oversight of such software

Vision Statement
āž” The Apache Software Foundation provides support for the
Apache community of open-source software projects. The
Apache projects are characterized by a collaborative,
consensus based development process, an open and
pragmatic software license, and a desire to create high
quality software that leads the way in its field. We consider
ourselves not simply a group of projects sharing a server, but
rather a community of developers and users.

Staying true
āž” Policy still firmly in the hands of the ASF
āž” Use outsourced help where needed
āž” Help volunteers, not replace them (if they want to do the work)
    āž” Only for administrative efforts
        āž” 3 FT sys-admins, 1 PT sys-admin
        āž” 1 PT Exec Assistant
āž” Infrastructure itself is a service provided by the ASF

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License.
Staying true
āž” Board/Infra/etc exists so projects and people donā€™t need to
    worry about it
āž” The ASF exists for the projects, the community and the
    membership.
āž” Our ā€œbest practicesā€ have proven themselves time and time
    again to work.
āž” The board runs the foundation
    The PMCs run the projects
(and rarely do the 2 interact)

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License.

14 Years is a LONG time
āž” Over a decade of declarative discussion and development
āž” We must be doing something right
āž” By maintaining our focus on the right direction - the projects and
        community
āž” Not all things to all people, and we donā€™t want to be
    āž” Growth, improvement without speciation
āž” The ā€œApache Wayā€ continues to be a sought-after topic at
    cons.
