Surfing The New Wave Analysis
In Surfing the New Wave: Music, Leisure, and Consumption, Valeria Manzano explains that rock n'
roll and jeans are products of the juvenilization of mass culture caused by an increase in youth
culture consumption in 1960s Argentina. These products allowed the youth generation to distinguish
themselves from other generations, often raising moral concerns, while also placing them within the
internationalized youth culture and aiding socioeconomic class distinction within the youth
generation. To begin, rock n' roll emerged as a youth–led movement largely due to El Club del Clan
which represented Argentine youth and their musical tastes. Rock n' roll in this context abided by
traditional gender roles, family values, and restrained fun. Popular ... Show more content on

This is because jeans were the first clothes targeted to, and appropriated by, the youth of Argentina;
previously youth clothing was the same as the clothing of their parents' generation. Jeans also
helped to connect youth with the international youth culture and, thus, their peers abroad because
they were unified through the same generational marker. However, jeans also aided class and gender
divides within the youth generation. The middle–class projected their intolerance of class tastes onto
jeans, thus, promoting class division through their view of imports as authentic and a form of
cultural renewal. Due to the emphasis on the value of imported jeans and their exclusivity, these
brands, primarily Lee and Levi Strauss, became a socioeconomic marker of the upper and middle
classes, distinguishable through their fade and loose fit style. Far West, the national brand of
vaqueros, or jeans, that the working–class could afford to wear, and did wear, were bluer and tighter.
Working–class men who wore jeans were subject to class specific anxieties that those who wore
jeans had a social and sexual disorder and, thus, were a threat. This class prejudice was portrayed in
Argentine films in which working–class men wearing vaqueros were rapists or homosexuals.
Additionally, women were largely excluded from wearing jeans, due to formal and informal dress
codes preventing them from wearing them for anything but leisure, but they still adhered to the class
values placed on American brand jeans preferring them over national brands which they dubbed

Social Medi A New Wave Of Technology
Social media is a new wave of technology that is sweeping our nation and captivating many users in
its wake. Social media like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook have become increasingly popular and
it seems as though everyone, at least in our generation, uses at minimum one of sites. Twitter is a
social media site where when you sign up, you get a profile, which is your domain name or @name,
from that profile you can tweet, tweets. Tweets are 140 characters or less of anything that you would
like to say out into the Twitter world and the tweets go onto a Timeline. The tweets that you see on
your timeline are of all the people that you follow and if someone sees your tweets on their timeline,
it means they are following you. Retweets work the same way, if I retweet something, it'll go onto
my profile as a retweet but it still shows the original author, and everyone that follows me will also
see that retweet. Now to divulge a little deeper into the concept of followers and following, just
because someone follows you doesn't mean that you have to follow them back and vice versa. This
is a difference from Facebook because when people accept each other as Facebook friends it's
mutual and now both users are subscribed to one another. This creates the idea of "Twitter famous"
people or people that are more popular than others on Twitter. There are studies that show a
correlation that the more tweets you have, the more followers are bound to have (Bosker, 2012).

Electromagnetic Radiation and Electron

Lab 1: Radio and Light Waves Virtual Lab
1) How is the radiating electric field (or electromagnetic signal) produced when radio stations
broadcast? Include a description of what is producing the signal as well as the reasoning behind how
this could produce a signal. We know that electromagnetic radiation is produced by accelerating
charges. In the radio transmitter, electrons oscillate up and down and are thus accelerating. An
electron will exert a force on another electron when they are some distance away, like charges repel.
When the electron in the transmitter oscillates up and down, the direction of the force it exerts
changes since the source of the force is moving. It takes some time for the change ... Show more

The amplitude affects the strength of the force, that is the length of the force vectors in the
electromagnetic wave. The wavelength of the wave depends only on the frequency with which the
electron in the transmitting antenna is oscillating up and down; and the speed of light.
Wavelength x Frequency = Speed of Light
6) If the oscillation frequency of the transmitting electron decreases, the oscillation frequency of the
electron in the receiver is instantaneously affected.
It is False:
The electron in the receiving antenna feels only the force resulting from the electromagnetic wave at
its current location. It only receives the transmitting electron because of the effects that the
transmitting electron has on the electromagnetic waves. So the receiving

French New Wave Film Techniques
Breathless is a 1960 French New Wave film, written and directed by Jean–Luc Godard, about a
wandering criminal and his girlfriend. The film premiered in France, attracting two million viewers
and winning both the Prix Jean Vigo and the Berlin International Film Festival Award for Best
Director in 1960. Godard's interesting use of numerous jump cuts in the story as well as
documentary style cinematography is what makes Breathless so iconic and recognized as one of the
earliest and most influential examples of the French New Wave genre. One of the main components
of the film is its use of jump cuts. In Godard's work, every scene with slow intervals was edited or
removed, creating multiple jump cuts that represented the passage of time. This feature was a
common method used in the French New Wave genre of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The main character breaks the forth wall, a method that dismisses the common film making practice
of the time, mirroring the rebellious nature once again. The French New Wave genre strived to go
against the aspects of Hollywood professionalism of other films, and Godard does so in many of his
works. In Breathless, as the camera focuses on the main character, he looks right back and speaks to
the audience. This technique allows the story to progress through as the main character narrates.
Apart from jump cutting, Godard uses documentary style cinematography to differ from the
sporadic effects of his editing. The film's cinematography is captured in a hand–held like manner,
creating a sense of realism. Godard used continuous shots for many of his dialogue scenes,
following the main character in his more slow paced, quiet moments, drawing out the mood.
Breathless captures the New Wave genre in these methods of breaking Hollywood's typical rules in
film making and its use of documentary style

The French New Wave Cinema
French New Wave cinema is widely considered one of the most influential periods in cinematic
history. The filmmaking techniques and ideas utilized during the French New Wave period can still
be seen in modern cinema, with some films uses them more than others. Two films that more
obviously been influenced by the era are Quentin Tarantino 's 1992 film Reservoir Dogs and
Christopher Nolan's 2000 film Memento. These films exude many traits and styles synonymous with
French New Wave cinema such as jump cuts and non–continuity editing, a low budget, anti–heroic
main characters, as well as others.
French New Wave was a cinematic movement that was active between the late 1950's and the late
1960's though the origins go back to german occupied France from the early 1940's. Following the
liberation of 1944, France saw the end of restrictions of media imposed by german occupation and
the cinema became more popular than ever, with a stockpile of banned American films starting to
flow in and France ramping up film production once again. Despite this by the early 1950's it
became more popular opinion by both critics and audiences that had become, for a lack of a better
word, stale, getting bogged down in an endless cycle of " generic historical reconstructions and
uninspired literary adaptations... French Cinema was said to be in desperate need of a new direction
" (Neupert, 17). During this time the film magazine, Cahiers du Cinema, was founded. Some of its

Escapism: Theme Of The French New Wave Films
Escapism: Theme of the French New Wave Movies The 400 Blows and Breathless
French New Wave influenced cinema worldwide. French New Wave filmmakers believed in auteur
cinema, and they tried to make films in which social and political issues were explored. French New
Wave movies were made with a small budget, natural setting, quick shootings, with a small crew,
hand–held cameras, and young actors (Philippe, 2010). The French New Wave movies had some
common thematic affinities; many of these movies portrayed that authoritative, romantic, and
political relationships are distrustful (Thompson & Bordwell, 2010). Francois Truffaut's movie The
400 Blows (1959) and Jean–Luc Godard's movie Breathless (1960) have a common theme of ...

Paris; we see Eiffel tower in the beginning credit scene in The 400 Blows, and Breathless was shot
in the streets, cafes, and hotels of Paris. Similarly, both movies were shot using the New French

Amélie: The New Wave
During the French New Wave, many critics became the moviemakers. One of the main qualities of
the New Wave were the casual looks of the films. In addition, the New Wave also used a large
amount of camera movements. The film Amélie is inspired by the French New Wave and uses its
distinct characteristics throughout the movie. In the film Amélie, director Jean–Pierre Jeunet uses
skillful directing, lighting, editing, and form to achieve themes such as innocence and happiness.
Jean–Pierre Jeunet is able to maintain the themes, simplicity and happiness, with strong directing.
Having strong directing allows the components of the mise en scene to be coherent throughout the
film. As a foundation, Jeunet develops a setting to help emphasize Amélie's ... Show more content

Editing allows the director to make the themes of the film appear clearly and correctly during a film.
This is achieved through elements such as, montage, time manipulation, and shot design. In Amélie,
the director uses montage to further advance the narrative of the story. In addition, montage can be
used to help build character traits. For example, in the scene where Amélie asks the question, "How
many couples are having an orgasm now?" the director uses montage sequences to evoke humor.
Using this montage helps to develop Amélie's character traits while also building upon the themes of
the movie. In addition to montage, time manipulation also helps the director further advance the
story. An example of time manipulation shown in the film is the scene where Amélie is cutting the
letters in to pieces incredibly fast. There are two main purposes for the director doing this: first, to
shorten the amount of time this task takes to complete and, second, to help the audience gain insight
into Amélie's character. In order to make the montage and time manipulations more effective in the
film, shot design is important. Throughout the film, Jeunet consistently uses close–up shots and
zoom shots. These shots are effective because it enhances the audience's experience and draws their
focus towards the characters emotion. In Amélie, understanding the emotions of the characters is
important to the story. This is because Amélie expresses herself more with her nonverbal language
than her verbal language. In particular, Amélie speaks mostly through her eyes and other facial
expressions. Another important aspect of editing in Amélie is the widespread use of Computer–
Generated Images (CGI), which can be seen in every scene of the film. A unique usage of CGI in the
film is the scene where Amélie turns to liquid in the middle of the café. These special effects help to
further the film's sense of fantasy and

Wave Interactions
Wave Interactions
Wave interactions include reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference. Wave interactions
occur when a wave hits something and it either reflects, refracts, diffracts, or there is an interference.
Many different types of waves can be involved in wave interactions including sound, light, surface,
etc.
Reflection occurs when a particular wave, or waves, bounce, or reflect back from an object through
which they cannot pass. An echo is a good example of a reflection wave interaction, but reflection
can occur with other types of waves, too. Light waves can be reflected too. A light source, such as a
light bulb or the sun, gives light to an object. That object reflects some of the light, and when the
light that has been reflected hits one's eye, he or she could see the object. When waves hit an object,
they reflect back in the same direction. Waves that are reflected have the same speed and frequency
as the original wave, so only their direction is changed. On the other hand, when waves hit an object
at an angle, they bounce at the same degree of angle, but in a different direction (CK–12
Foundation, 2017).
The bending of waves as they pass from one form of matter to another is refraction. When light
travels from an object to one's eyes, it makes the object seem to be in a different location. As waves
access a new medium. they travel at a different rate in the alternative medium. For instance, light
waves travel at a lower rate in water than in air. The

The Environment Of Surfing (Part II)
Surfing ––
The Environment of Surfing (Part I of II)
Surfing has changed since Christian missionaries observed Polynesians in the waves centuries ago.
Light, new materials and a variety of board shapes have opened surfing to more people while
allowing expert surfers to ride more waves in different ways. In the US, surfers can be found along
the Atlantic seaboard and from Alaska to Baja on the Pacific side of the nation (and, of course,
Hawaii).
Choosing Your Style
The first surfboards were heavy wooden boards over 10 feet long, and 11– to 14–foot boards are still
used for tandem surfing, where two people ride together. Today, most surfing is done on longboards
of 9 to 11 feet or on shortboards, around 7 feet or less.
The style of surfing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They include beach safety and learning to read waves. If you cannot swim, you should not surf ––
you may think you're safe attached to a large flotation device, but what if your leash breaks?
When you learn to read waves, you'll be observing how frequently the sets come in, where the wave
is breaking, and how well–formed (and surfable) the wave is. Every surfer takes time to watch the
waves before getting in the water, and sometimes what they see is that the beach isn't good for
surfing that day.
The best way to learn to read waves is from an experienced surfer. But not all of us have a good
friend who wants to help us work into the local surf spot (more about territoriality later).
Fortunately, most US surf areas have local surf schools in operation, some that even offer teaching
trips to warm–water vacation spots like Mexico.
Doing Your Homework
Surfing is a remarkably dynamic sport. More so than in other outdoor sports, the surfer is at the
mercy of the environment. A complex blend of geography, wind, tide, and swell can make the very
same beach a small and mild longboard haven one day, a stiff and challenging platform for
shortboard acrobatics another day, and a messy jumble of pure danger at other

History of the French New Wave
In 1959– early 1960 five directors released debut feature length films that are widely regarded as
heralding the start of the French nouvelle vague or French New Wave. Claude Chabrols Le Beau
Serge (The Good Serge, 1959) and Les Cousins (The Cousins, 1959) were released, along with
Francois Truffauts Les Quatre cents coups (The 400 Blows, 1959), Jean–Luc Godards A bout de
souffle (Breathless, 1960) and Alain Resnais Hiroshima mon amour (Hiroshima my love, 1959).

Cinema output. It was a prestige cinema preocupied with impresssive content and continuity. During
this time the French Cinema was quite healthy and shared the market about 50/50 with American
cinema. Despite the relative stability of the French Film industry in the early and mid 50s there was
a growing voice emanating from the emerging youth culture, for some new and fresh ideas. The pre
war cine–club movement was revived and by 1954 there were over 200 clubs with 100,000
members. These clubs would show Hollywood classics as well as the latest releases. They would
also show many of the re–released French films of the 30s from such directors as Jean Renoir and
Jean Vigo and many of the Hollywood films that were never released during the occupation. It was
from such clubs that the inspiration and driving force of many of the new wave directors came from.
A young Francois Truffaut, along with Jean Luc–Godard and Jacques Rivette, some of the
prominent future new wave directors and future writers for the Cahiers du Cinema, used to frequent
Cinematheque Francais. This was a cine–club founded by Henri Langlois and devoted to screening

This caused outrage in an Industry already low on capital and fighting to recover after the
occupation years. The number of American features increased tenfold while French film output
reduced to just seventy–eight features a year. Similar agreements with other European countries
worsened the situation as countries which traditionally relied on French Cinema were being
saturated by Hollywood. This caused an outrage within the industry and in 1948 the French
Government introduced legislation which brought back a quota on American films of 121 per year.
Along with this quota, legislation was introduced which would shape the French film industry
throughout the 50s. Major bank loans were made available for stable production companies to
finance future films and a new admissions tax was introduced. If a film was successful then a large
fund would build up which the government made specifically available to producers to fund future
films. This encouraged production companies to make popular and safe films with star names and
well known stories, and discouraged experimentation. Throughout the early and mid 50s many
literary adaptations, costume dramas and huge co–productions with cast and crew drawn from both

Globalization : A New Wave Of Christian Thought
Introduction
The introduction of religion due to globalization has brought about challenges and benefits to the
different regions of the world. A shift in thinking and migration has formed a new wave of Christian
thought in southern regions of the world and the benefits are uneven resulting in; the strong are
getting stronger and the weak are continuing to whisk away while holding on to hope. It's safe to say
that in many parts of Africa, Latin America and Asia, religion is about sheer survival through
adaptation, identity and personal faith. This southward trend has spread religious idealism of
Christianity which will lead to a new powerful global Christianity.
It has been predicted by cultural historians that a shift in world culture and a decrease of clashes
among civilizations. Well, part of that prediction is current with the expansion of Christianity into
new areas and the decease of clashing has not cease, but rising. According to Philip Jenkins, he
proposes that global demographics changes will lead to a revitalization of Christianity. He also notes
that the Christian religion that has been very traditional and its forms are being adopted quickly and
spreading. Because of its spread over time the majority of Christians will be non–white believer,
traditional, and not of European descent. (Jenkins) The southward movement has been influenced by
numerous factors. Historically, globalization has contributed in the new modern era and continues to

New Feminism Of The Second Wave Analysis
There are several things from the reading that I found interesting. The part of reading titled "The
New Feminism Of The 'Second Wave'" was probably one of the more interesting parts. The fact that
for some women the discrimination ban (in relation to sex) did more damage than good was a real
shock to me. The fact that women were fired, and victimized after that movement was something
that I didn't imagine. Obviously this wasn't the case for all women, and how some greatly benefitted
from this movement. Obviously the movement was a huge step for most women, and their wanting
to pursue a career. It was a great accomplishment that, at least legally, every man in power couldn't

Where this idea came from, and how it is any different than straight people, I couldn't tell you. If
someone was openly gay people assumed that they couldn't be in a consistent relationship, and were
just having casual and unsafe sex. This was true for some, but not all obviously. They were thought
of as dirty, and containing many STI's. Obviously this movement did a lot of great things for the,
whats now known as, LGBTQ community. For example, they got doctors to prove that being
anywhere on the gay spectrum is not a choice, but is naturally how someone is born. They proved
the "normality" of being gay, lesbian, or bisexual. At this point in him (around 1970's) it was thought
of as disease, and something that certain doctors could "cure" someone of. As history shows us, they
did believe it, but this could also involve money for the doctor. Why would they, scientifically,
admit that someone that makes them a good portion of their money, is fake; they wouldn't. From this
liberation movement newspapers, magazines, and pride flags were then sold for the community, and
or allies. The gay movement, and the bill to make women and men be treated the same in the
workplace were two amazing movements. These movement's really shaped to whom this county is
today. Of course there are strides that have yet to be taken, but these were

The Waves Of New York City Essay
The Waves of New York City

Away is a documentary about the surfing subculture in New York City that is shown through three
female surfers at Rockaway Beach.
The film was directed and produced by Elisa Bates. It was shown in many surf film festivals
including; New York Surf Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, and Pop–up Surf Film
Festival.
There is something so spiritual about surfing. I have never surfed a day in my life but every time I
watch others surf I feel this yearning to pick up a board and join them. It looks like one of the most
dangerous but most fulfilling activities at the same time. I once read somewhere that humans are
attracted to water and enjoy being in water because 70% of our body is made up of water and at
molecular level, we crave water. When I watch surfers, I feel that it's true and that I'm being pulled
into the waters from deep within myself. It's no surprise the sound of waves calms most people and
helps them to relax. We associate the sounds of the ocean with calmness so surfers are just people in
search of the ultimate mediation. Don't get me wrong, surfing is not as simple as picking up a board
and going into the ocean. It takes a lot of hard work to be able to surf and the bigger the waves, the
harder it is to surf. Surfers have to have great upper body strength, an ... Show more content on

Disability Law : A New Wave Of Benefits
The use of disability law for transsexuals has brought awesome benefits to the community, and it is
currently becoming a new wave of benefits. Disability law works for transsexuals, and is currently
available to people without current diagnosed gender identity disorder, so it could protect more
people in the coming future, as it continues to be used. In this essay I will give a brief overview of
disability law within the trans community, and gender binary populace. Throughout the essay, I shall
show the more prevalent decisions to promote more transsexuals to increase their litigations for
disability law. Their have been current efforts to use disability law for trans people, in what is
known as the "medical model" of disability, which relies only on medical diagnoses. In addition, the
"medical model" has regarded disability as a biological reality of impairment, which could be a
defect or sickness rather than an issue caused by the environment. In the past transsexuals have been
successful in securing protections against employment, winning protections on the basis of disability
though employment practice and sex discrimination claims. On the other hand, the medical model
does have its limitations, and disabilities protections have failed were sex discriminations and sexual
protections have excelled. In Evans V. Hamburger the plaintiff's allegation of sexual orientation was

Technology And Technology
Final Paper
INTRODUCTION
"Today's social media has undeniably transformed our means of communication, created new
opportunities for brands and universities and even brought personality back into a digital world"
(Willis 4). Through the recent years, technology advances have shaped the way we view and use
social media. From texting on smart phones, internet platforms, smart cars and homes, technology is
making it easier and more accessible to explore new possibilities. Some argue that this will make
society lazy and unintelligent, I disagree. We our expanding our knowledge and the way we learn,
pushing boundaries farther, and it is only the beginning. The new wave of technology and social
media is expanding our world for the better.
DISCUSSION
Social media and technology are providing different ways to share new information with its users.
People have all the information they wish to learn right at their fingertips. In her article, Judith
Newman describes her son's enlightening interactions with Apple's voice automated system, Siri.
"Gus had never noticed Siri before, but when he discovered there was someone who would not just
find information on his various obsessions (trains, planes, buses, escalators and, of course, anything
related to weather) but semi–discuss these subjects tirelessly, he was hooked" (Newman 1018–
1019). Not only can technology educate us on our surrounding fascinations, but social media can
provide insight to what lifestyles are like in other cultures

New Wave Music : The Genre Of Rock Music
New wave is a genre of rock music popular from the late 1970s to the mid–1980s with ties to 1970s
punk rock. New wave moved away from blues and rock and roll sounds to create pop music that
incorporated disco, mod, and electronic music. Although it incorporates much of the original punk
rock sound and ethos, new wave exhibits greater complexity in both music and lyrics. Common
characteristics of new wave music include the use of synthesizers and electronic productions, the
importance of styling and the arts, as well as diversity. New wave has been called one of the
definitive genres of the 1980s, after it grew partially fixated on MTV, and the popularity of several
new wave artists, attributed to their exposure on the channel. In the mid–1980s, differences between
new wave and other music genres began to blur. During the 2000s, a number of acts, such as the
Strokes, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand and The Killers explored new wave and post–punk influences.
The catch–all nature of new wave music has been a source of much confusion and controversy. The
1985 discography Who's New Wave in Music listed artists in over 130 separate categories. New
wave first emerged as a rock genre in the early 1970s, used by critics including Nick Kent and Dave
Marsh to classify such New York–based groups as the Velvet Underground and New York Dolls.
Like the filmmakers of the French new wave movement, its new artists were anti–corporate and
experimental. Part of what attracted Stein and others to new wave was the music's stripped back
style and upbeat tempos, which they viewed as a much needed return to the energetic rush of rock
and roll and 1960s rock that had dwindled in the 1970s with the ascendance of overblown
progressive rock and stadium spectacles. Music historian Vernon Joynson claimed that new wave
emerged in the UK in late 1976, when many bands began disassociating themselves from punk. New
wave died out in the mid–1980s, knocked out by guitar–driven rock reacting against new wave. Late
1970s new wave acts such as the Pretenders and the Cars were more likely to be found on classic
rock playlists than on new wave playlists there. Reflecting its British origins, the 2004 study Popular

The New Wave Art Center
Art, being an important part of our human activity, offers us an interesting and meaningful life. As
the time goes by, art is not a single word that belongs to a noble or rich people, but it belongs to all
of us from billionaires to workers. The New Wave Arts Center, located in Bloomington, Indiana,
should provide a piece of pure land for ballet dancers to experience and for audiences to enjoy.
The New Wave Art Center seeks to provide remarkable ballet performances and wonderful ballet
classes to local residents, which will expand the opportunities for bringing ballet into our
community. (Mission Statement) By doing these performances and class, we are hoping to increase
people's interests about the art of ballet and become the best ballet performance organization in the
state of Indiana. (Vision Statement) Because the organization is not mature enough to have many
different opportunities and resources to use, we have to use our location advantage to solve our
problems. We are close to Indiana University at Bloomington, so the school will provide many
resources for us. Finding volunteers will be solved in the school and we can also inviting the
students who interested in ballet classes to be our "customers". The advertisement of our
performances and classes will be online, written in our official website. It will clearly state the
performance schedules, classes' schedules, teacher's information, tickets prices and all the
information that we have to share with our people.

Microwaves, computers, cell phones, what do they all have in common? desktop fabricators.
desktop fabricators have paved the way for engineers by making the impossible possible. They are
the new wave parts manufacturing because of their intelligent manufacturing process and part by

uploaded digitally into the computer. The thing we can build today with 3d printing were not even

With desktop fabricating, surgeons can produce mockups of parts of their patient 's body which
needs to be operated upon. desktop fabricating makes it possible to make a part from scratch in just
hours. It allows designers and developers to go from flat screen to exact part. Nowadays almost
everything from aerospace components to toys are getting built with the help of desktop fabricators.
desktop fabricating is also used for jewelry and art, architecture, fashion design, art, architecture and
interior design." For more personal printing, recreational item for hobbyists are made. Things like
missing board game pieces, plastic cups, other home essentials, and cool collectibles impossible to
build conventionally like asymmetrical tops. Most domestic desktop fabricators are priced from
250$–2000$ and is definitely a worthy investment for hobbyists and inventors. The best part is that
any person can learn desktop fabricating and CAD (meaning Computer Aided Design). It only takes
weeks to get familiar with the processes involved using tools like Sketchup and Blender. So 3D
printing becomes a very viable option for manufacturers everywhere, but is this not always good.
As with all technology 3D printers have risks associated with them. A big factor in these risk is how
it is digitally orienting allowing for downloads and digital transfers of blueprints. Thats all well and
good but what about illegal transfers and stealing designs? It has

The Foreign New Wave
found ways to go around the Code legally. This maneuvering eventually led to the screwball
comedy, a genre popular for the time. By 1940, the Senate had conducted hearings on the major
studios for influencing the public towards an anti isolationist approach in World War II. That being
said, within a year after Pearl Harbor, almost 1/3 of every Hollywood film involved war material.
Unlike before the war, the government now mandated two genres: the combat film and the home
front melodrama. On the home front, demographics were changing. Audiences moved to suburban
areas and away from urban areas, where the studios had invested most of their capital in their theater
chains. To combat this, Hollywood began to purchase drive–in theaters in suburban ... Show more

The Foreign New Wave brought a new attention to cinema as art and also as a form of national
expression. The variety and multitude of foreign cinema at this time makes it very difficult to define
and even distinguish it from the main stream Hollywood films of that time.
One thing is certain, though: the movement arose in response to Hollywood's dominance and the
devastation of post World War II. After the war, European countries instituted protectionist policies
to defend their film programs. On the surface, these policies were introduced for economic reasons.
However, many believe that the measures were made to deter the American influence at that time.
American troops still benevolently occupied Europe, leading to a widespread fear that America was
trying to colonize the European subconscious. Unlike America, the impact of television hadn't fully
taken place in Europe. The Box Office went unchallenged as the primary visual entertainment.
Cinema absorbed culture. Cinema magazines, which published articles on the movement, began to
circulate rapidly. The Italian magazine, "Cinema," was one of the early pioneering

French New Wave and Poetic Realism Essay
Since the very first actualities from the Lumière brothers and the fantastical shorts of Maries
Georges Jean Méliès, cinema has continually fulfilled its fundamental purpose of artistic reflection
on societal contexts throughout the evolution of film. Two French cinematic movements, Poetic
Realism (1934–1940) and French New Wave (1950–1970), serve as historical bookends to World
War II, one of the most traumatic events in world history. The Rules of the Game (Jean Renoir,
1939) is a classic example of French Poetic realism that depicts the disillusionment in society and
government politics by a generation already traumatized by the monumental loss of human life
during the First World War. Breathless (Jean Luc Godard, 1960), one of Jean ... Show more content

Renoir exemplifies what Andre Bazin refers to as a director with faith in reality. In his essay
"Evolution of the Language of Cinema", Bazin contrasts the heavy editing and choppy style of the
Soviet montage tradition with Renoir who "uncovered the secret of a film form that would permit
everything to be said without chopping the world up into little fragments, that would reveal the
hidden meaning in people and things without disturbing the unity natural to them" (38). Realism, in
this sense, means showing long continuous shots without manipulation through editing and cross
cutting––– to tell a story in the same form as if it were unfolding in the real world. Renoir plays with
the idea of the formative and imaginary "farce" of the societal world by staging these formative
traditions within the editing conventions of realism. This integration of a lyrical and poetic story
within the poignant critique of a dark reality can be seen during the hunting scene, which
intersperses documentary style footage of animals throughout. The complexity of this scene requires
the active attention of the audience and demands a closer look at the realities behind societies' farce,
which resulted in audience rioting in theaters when the movie was first released. In this way, Renoir

anti–establishment hero who finds himself surrounded by the establishment as he returns home from

New Wave films explored. As Hoffman stands at the bottom of the pool in scuba gear, it is clear that
he is not part of the world created by his parents, but he is not sure where he belongs. The film uses
popular music to help tell the story, in this case the music of Simon and Garfunkel. It seems that the

George Lucas New Wave
During the 1960s and 1970s many nations around the world had a film revolution where young
filmmakers were making new and different types of movies, they called this movement a "New
Wave." Although Hollywood was was the film capital of the world, it also went through a movement
where young directors were taking control of their films over the production studios, the films were
reaching to younger audiences, and the films were generally more independent and had to be cheap.
The reason for this "new wave" movement was because old Hollywood was losing money and it
needed a new way of making films, it needed to be shaken up. Influence from all over the globe

George Lucas was one of these directors, being 29 at the time of directing his second film American
Graffiti. Lucas was challenged by Francis Ford Coppola to produce a script that would appeal to
mainstream audiences(Hearn). Lucas, accepting the challenge, based the script of the film off of his
1960s teen years in Modesto, California. Lucas felt his experience with picking up girls in the 60s
would induce nostalgia into the similarly aged moviegoers at the time. The movie was aimed toward
people from ages 20 to 30 and Lucas based each of the four main male characters on different points
in his life. Lucas felt compelled to document the whole experience and what my generation used as
a way of meeting girls(Hearn)." Lucas being a new young director had trouble pitching the idea to
financiers and distributors, where he was turned down by every studio except for Universal Pictures.
The lack of financiers forced Lucas to create his own production company, Lucasfilms Ltd and
partner up with Francis Ford Coppola's production company in order for the film to get enough
money to be made. For this reason, the movie also had to be cheap, which was another characteristic
of general new wave cinema. The film had a production budget of $777,000, however, the movie

Essay about Cleo 5 to 7 as a New Wave Film
Cleo 5 to 7 as a New Wave Film
Agnes Varda is not only one of the few female directors of new wave cinema; she is also credited as
having helped create the genre. Her short film La Point–Courte is considered by some as the first
new wave film. Her first full length movie, Cleo 5 to 7 falls within this genre as well. It is the story
of a young woman dying of cancer and how she sees the world in the context of time. We follow the
singer Cleo as she changes into the woman Flora and as she does so she begins to look at time in a
different manner. It is the way time is represented through the camera shots which really make this
film part of its new wave genre.
The movie begins with a five minute prologue that occurs during the credits in ... Show more

The fact that this is used in a film that is other wise more or less uncut, in terms of it following Cleo
for the last 90 minutes of waiting for her test results, keeps the film from having a documentary feel.
Another interesting use of camera cutting can be found in the in between scene where Cleo is
roaming the streets of Paris. She is now becoming the one watching other people rather than being
the one watched as she was in the beginning (probably because of her beauty and famous singer
status). While she is watching the camera cuts between other people's conversations and then while
she is walking the camera is in essence her point of view. However during this walk, the people
passing are watching her as well, thus proving that this is the transition time. The use of cutting
between shots of her and shots of all these people passing her not only show this change in who is
watching who, but also allows for a sense of time passing. Interspersed with these shots are images
of people we have already met, the widow, the boyfriend, the piano player, as well as the images of
a monkey resting on a clock and her wig resting on the mirror, these things conveying how the
people who know her see her and how she sees herself. This is a genius montage because these two
things represent the same thing, how people see her, how she sees people, and how she sees herself,
and by interspersing them we see

Tom Brennan Film Analysis
Comparative Essay – Tom Brennan and The Wave
In the book Tom Brennan and the documentary The Wave, the role of insiders and outsiders in
society is shown, also both the film and novel show how there are many individuals who are
affected by being not accepted. There many examples in the novel Tom Brennan and the film The
Wave that support this point. In Tom Brennan the major example of this is when there is a car
accident caused by drink driving. As a result of the accident the Brennan family become outsiders
and forced to move away from their town. To add to this, in The Wave the whole film is based
around a 'Hitler' like group that are the 'insiders' and that anyone who are not a part of the group are
losers and thus outsiders. Throughout the novel and the film the way individuals are affected by
being excluded is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Wave's idea is to show how a small group can turn into a large movement because people see
The Wave as the 'cool' thing to be a part of, thus joining the group. The Wave became so successful
because people in their society want to fit and be a part of something rather than being left out and
bullied. The Wave also shows how the people who don't believe in the group and are not a part of it
are treated by the people in the group. The way the outsiders are treated is by being disrespected and
bullied. However at the end of the film The Wave shows the audience how fitting in is not always a
good thing as the group is then compared to the Nazi movement which shows the that the people
who stated that The Wave's goals and intensions were wrong were right in the end. Tom Brennan,
however portrays the idea of insiders and outsiders in a serious but not so in your face way. Tom

True or False: The electron in the receiving antenna oscillates at a lower frequency than the electron
in the transmitting antenna because of the distance between the two antennas.
False: when the transmitting antenna's electron oscillates, it sets up on an electromagnetic wave that
oscillates at the same frequency. This wave causes the electron in the receiver to oscillate at the
same frequency. Electrons, therefore, in both the transmitter and receiver (antennas) oscillate at
identical frequencies.
True or False: If the frequency of oscillation increases but the amplitude of the electron oscillation
remains the same, then the electron in the transmitting antenna is experiencing larger accelerations
(recall what you know about acceleration and motion).
True: electrons must move faster as they oscillate back and forth in order for the frequency to
increase while the amplitude remains the same. Delta velocity / time is a measure of the average
acceleration. A larger change in velocity than at the old frequency if the electron is ovine faster
towards its peak height than away from its peak height at the new frequency. Moreover, the time for
this change is velocity to be seen is less than for the old frequency. These changes indicate
acceleration is larger.

Breaking The Standards Of Film: The French New Wave
French New Wave: Breaking the Standards
The French New Wave during the 1950s and 1960s broke the standards of cinema, and
revolutionized the film industry. "During the late 1950s and early 1960s, the New Wave rejuvenated
France's already prestigious cinema and energized the international art cinema as well as film
criticism and theory, reminding many contemporary observers of Italian neorealism's impact right
after World War II" (Neupert xv). World War II left in a large amount of debt. At that time, very few
films produced outside of France was not allowed to be played into theatres. However, the Blum–

agreement allowed American products such as films ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When watching a movie during this new generation of films is the editing sets it apart from earlier
films. Films during the New Wave used jump cuts throughout the film. A jump cut is defined as, "an
abrupt break in the continuity of a scene created by editing out part of a shot or scene" ("Jump cut").
A jump cut shows the difference of time and space between two shots to match or mismatch scenes
to make a connection. Before the French New Wave, film directors avoided this technique to keep
the illusion of reality and continuous editing between shots or scenes. Previous films would use a
long shot to set up a scene, and shot–reaction shots to keep the continuity of the film. These old
techniques were the main formula known as the "Classic Hollywood Narrative". The Classic
Hollywood Narrative had certain techniques that all filmmakers followed and did not break these
rules to ensure the illusion of reality is kept in the audience's perspective. In Goddard's film,
Breathless (Godard 1960), Jean Seberg (Patricia Franchini) and Jean Paul Belmondo (Michel
Poiccard) drive in a car around Paris. Godard uses jump cuts when the characters are discussing and
not the normal long take. The frame is not composed over the shoulder and is positioned a little off
the shoulder. The conversation is not a shot–reaction shot and the audience does not see Jean Paul's
face during the conversation besides a few moments. This film shows the discontinuity of editing
and following the rules of the editing. Thus, the audience is aware he/she is watching a movie and
the illusion of reality is broken. The Classic Hollywood Narrative stated that transitions from scene
to scene was moving one location to next and watching the time it took to get to the new scene.
However, in the French New Wave filmmakers just jumped to a new scene and used the idea of

Sound Waves Essay
What is a sound wave? A sound wave is produced by a mechanical vibration, such as a tuning fork.
The vibrating object causes the surrounding medium, such as air, to vibrate as well. The wave travels
through the medium to a detector, like your ear, and it is heard. As with any type of wave, a sound
wave is also described by it's wavelength, amplitude, period, and frequency.
WAVELENGTH is the distance from one point on the wave, to the next identical point, or the length
of one part of the wave.
AMPLITUDE is the distance from the midpoint to the place of maximum displacement.
FREQUENCY is the number of cycles that occur in one second.
It is also the inverse of the period.
PERIOD is the time it takes for a wave to complete one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be represented as : v2 = (elastic property / inertial property). Where the elastic property is
usually the bulk modulus or Young's modulus of the medium, and the inertial property is the density
of the medium.
The red bar on the left acts as the driving piston. If it moves in a sinusoidal manner from left to
right, then the wave that is produced will be a sinusoidal wave. Since the wave is sinusoidal, the
wavelength, amplitude and frequency are constant. This is seen in nature as a tuning fork, which
produces a periodic sound wave. In a one dimensional tube as shown above, each particle undergoes
simple harmonic motion. The volume that is contained in one wavelength also undergoes this same
motion. We can represent the displacement of this volume as: s(x,t) = smax cos(kx – wt), where
smax is the maximum displacement or displacement amplitude, k is the angular wave number, and
w is the angular frequency of the piston. We can also represent the change in pressure at any point in
the same manner as we did for the volume displacement. That is shown by: dP(x,t) = dPmax sin(kx
– wt), where dPmax is the maximum change in pressure, k is angular wave number, and w is angular
frequency.
By combining the two equations we can receive the result: dPmax = pvwsmax where the maximum
change in pressure (dPmax), is equal to the density

New Wave Cinema
In David Cook's, "A History of Narrative Film," it is said that "the prevailing mode of postwar
French cinema was literary adaption, which caused French films to become increasingly verbal and

and the other critics writing in Cashiers du Cinema, that the New Wave reacted in the late 1950's and

Astruc's notion was to break away from the tyranny of narrative in order to evolve a new form of
audiovisual language" (Cook, 350). Astruc went on to describe how the problem of the cinema is

Identifying Human Hair and Animal Fair by Laser Diffraction
1. Introduction:
1.1 Overview
The ability to identify an animal by examining its fur is a useful one for taxonomists and biologists.
The hair of prey is often not digested by a predator, and so can be found in the predators scat and
measured to ascertain its diet (Anwar et al., 2011). An electron microscope can be used to obtain a
lot of data from hair, including its width and the shape and texture of its surface, however electron
microscopes are expensive and time consuming to operate (Sessions et al., 2009). Lasers are much
cheaper and can be used to easily measure the width of narrow objects by measuring the interference
pattern created when laser light is diffracted around the object. As a result, laser diffraction may be a
more preferable method for identifying hairs based on their width. This experiment hopes to show
that laser diffraction is an accurate enough method for obtaining the width of narrow objects, such as
animal and human hairs, to allow comparison between them.
1.2 Wave interactions
1.2.1 Diffraction:
Diffraction is a physical phenomenon that occurs when waves encounter an obstacle or gap between
obstacles. Depending on the wavelength of the wave and the size of the obstacle or gap waves bend
and spread out. Waves tend to diffract more around objects or gaps of a similar size to their
wavelength. How a wave will diffract when it meets an object can be modelled using Huygen's
construction. Huygen's construction is based on Huygen's principle of light

Summary Of ' Meet The New Waves '
Rebecca McKenney History and Sociology of Rock Music Mrs. Trimble 22 October 2016 Meet the
New Waves In chapter fifteen of Rock Music Styles: A History, author Katherine Charlton discusses
the musical style of new wave. There are many new way groups in the world, but Charlton only
selected some of the most notable groups. Charlton divided these notable groups by American and
British nationalities. In order to give equal attention to both sides, I have chosen four primary artists
to represent new wave. We will begin with the Americans. Devo was created by Bob and Mark
Mothersbaugh, Bob and Jerry Casale, and Allan Alan Meyers, in 1972, according to All Music

Truth About De–Evolution. The band got their name from the idea that "instead of evolving
mankind has actually regressed." The group impacted new wave by the use of surreal humor mixed
with commentary on the current human condition and dehumanized electric music. *According to
the band's official website, Rolling Stone Magazine initially called the group fascist. Their most
popular hit in the United States was "Whip It", which at its high of popularity reached number

Abstract
Metamaterials have been a subject of increasing interest due to their ability to manipulate the flow
of EM waves. We analyse the mechanism by which metamaterials are able to exhibit this property
which is exploited to develop the Harry Potter–esque invisibility cloaks. We briefly discuss the
whole new branch of optics called "Transformation Optics" developed for this purpose, and
comment on the extent to which these materials can cloak.
Introduction
Metamaterials are artificially designed materials which have properties that cannot be found in
natural materials.[1] They were first theoretically proposed by Veselago in 1968 as materials having
negative permeability and permittivity. This is why these are also known as Left Handed Materials
(LHM) or Negative Refractive Index materials (NIM). The first discovery in this domain was done
by Sir Pendry et al in 1996, who discovered a wire medium with negative permittivity. This was
followed by other significant discoveries like negative permeability by Pendry in 1999 and LHM by
Sir Smith in 2001.
Metamaterial structures can either be periodic (homogenous) or non–periodic (inhomogenous).
Their properties depend on the construction and arrangement of their constituents. These con–
stituents are usually smaller

of secondary effects. This particular school is a private school for young men that come from
families that are financially endowed. Money has found a way to creep up into the scene and find a
way to miraculously make the despicable tolerable. An indication of having the powers–that–be to
"turn a blind eye" to these misdeeds. This also rings true to our educational system today. First, two
points will be discussed concerning education and how money can influence it. Secondly, problems
that arise in the education system when it is influenced by monetary contributions. Furthermore, the
discussion will denote how some believe that new wave of charter ... Show more content on

Likewise, accolades given to such schools have created a fog or cloud effect to cause a distraction to
mask the truth. Various polls and research indicate that though charter schools are held up to uphold
higher educational standards, they seem to continuously fall short comparable to their nemesis,
public schools. Reports based on each state statistically show that charter schools are closing in
record numbers. Some charter schools do not even make it complete a whole academic year.
Mismanagement of funds is the culprit to these charter schools closing. Once again, this may be
another indication that could plausibly prove the point that the driving forces to operate such school
may be financially driven and not the academic in itself. There is a notion that charter schools can
"buy" their way into academic success. There is no guarantee that this has not or will not transpire.
However, Hollywood dramatization of how affluent and prestigious private schools have the means
to override or make officials "blind to certain things" may be the precursor for what charter schools
are modeled after. In conclusion, I would like to reiterate the fact charter schools were originally
designed to provide a better education for underprivileged students of lower income areas. These are
the same schools that vowed to provide an exceptional education to those most in need. To have
them be academically

Just What I Needed: The New Wave
The new wave is a musical genre that is almost the child of punk. It was a British movement that
came out of punk. Although punk bands hated the disco movement, the new wave used the beat of
disco in their songs. The new wave was a term used almost as a replacement for punk. But when the
new wave became over used and even confused people in the record company, they changed the
meaning. Punk was used for bands that has the loud, fast, crude and anger in their songs. While the
new wave was used for bands that had an ironic, cool and distant sounds or look The band The Cars,
was a band in the new wave era. In the song "Just What I Needed", they have that "Cool" vibe that
the punk bands don't have. Unlike in punk bands, where the lyrics are usually

Surfing The New Wave Analysis

  • 1. Surfing The New Wave Analysis In Surfing the New Wave: Music, Leisure, and Consumption, Valeria Manzano explains that rock n' roll and jeans are products of the juvenilization of mass culture caused by an increase in youth culture consumption in 1960s Argentina. These products allowed the youth generation to distinguish themselves from other generations, often raising moral concerns, while also placing them within the internationalized youth culture and aiding socioeconomic class distinction within the youth generation. To begin, rock n' roll emerged as a youth–led movement largely due to El Club del Clan which represented Argentine youth and their musical tastes. Rock n' roll in this context abided by traditional gender roles, family values, and restrained fun. Popular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is because jeans were the first clothes targeted to, and appropriated by, the youth of Argentina; previously youth clothing was the same as the clothing of their parents' generation. Jeans also helped to connect youth with the international youth culture and, thus, their peers abroad because they were unified through the same generational marker. However, jeans also aided class and gender divides within the youth generation. The middle–class projected their intolerance of class tastes onto jeans, thus, promoting class division through their view of imports as authentic and a form of cultural renewal. Due to the emphasis on the value of imported jeans and their exclusivity, these brands, primarily Lee and Levi Strauss, became a socioeconomic marker of the upper and middle classes, distinguishable through their fade and loose fit style. Far West, the national brand of vaqueros, or jeans, that the working–class could afford to wear, and did wear, were bluer and tighter. Working–class men who wore jeans were subject to class specific anxieties that those who wore jeans had a social and sexual disorder and, thus, were a threat. This class prejudice was portrayed in Argentine films in which working–class men wearing vaqueros were rapists or homosexuals. Additionally, women were largely excluded from wearing jeans, due to formal and informal dress codes preventing them from wearing them for anything but leisure, but they still adhered to the class values placed on American brand jeans preferring them over national brands which they dubbed ... • 3. Social Medi A New Wave Of Technology Social media is a new wave of technology that is sweeping our nation and captivating many users in its wake. Social media like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook have become increasingly popular and it seems as though everyone, at least in our generation, uses at minimum one of sites. Twitter is a social media site where when you sign up, you get a profile, which is your domain name or @name, from that profile you can tweet, tweets. Tweets are 140 characters or less of anything that you would like to say out into the Twitter world and the tweets go onto a Timeline. The tweets that you see on your timeline are of all the people that you follow and if someone sees your tweets on their timeline, it means they are following you. Retweets work the same way, if I retweet something, it'll go onto my profile as a retweet but it still shows the original author, and everyone that follows me will also see that retweet. Now to divulge a little deeper into the concept of followers and following, just because someone follows you doesn't mean that you have to follow them back and vice versa. This is a difference from Facebook because when people accept each other as Facebook friends it's mutual and now both users are subscribed to one another. This creates the idea of "Twitter famous" people or people that are more popular than others on Twitter. There are studies that show a correlation that the more tweets you have, the more followers are bound to have (Bosker, 2012). What makes you decide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Electromagnetic Radiation and Electron Nietkalieva Dinara IS113k Lab 1: Radio and Light Waves Virtual Lab 1) How is the radiating electric field (or electromagnetic signal) produced when radio stations broadcast? Include a description of what is producing the signal as well as the reasoning behind how this could produce a signal. We know that electromagnetic radiation is produced by accelerating charges. In the radio transmitter, electrons oscillate up and down and are thus accelerating. An electron will exert a force on another electron when they are some distance away, like charges repel. When the electron in the transmitter oscillates up and down, the direction of the force it exerts changes since the source of the force is moving. It takes some time for the change ... The wavelength of the wave the distance between the peak of one wave and the peak of the next, between the minimum of one and the minimum or the next, or between any two points the encompass one complete wave cycle. Equivalently, this is the distance the wave travels from when say the electron is at the peak of its motion and the next time it gets to the peak of its motion. Either way this is about 10 or so grid points. 5) If the amplitude is increased, what happens to the wavelength? The wavelength stays the same The amplitude affects the strength of the force, that is the length of the force vectors in the electromagnetic wave. The wavelength of the wave depends only on the frequency with which the electron in the transmitting antenna is oscillating up and down; and the speed of light. Wavelength x Frequency = Speed of Light 6) If the oscillation frequency of the transmitting electron decreases, the oscillation frequency of the electron in the receiver is instantaneously affected. It is False: The electron in the receiving antenna feels only the force resulting from the electromagnetic wave at its current location. It only receives the transmitting electron because of the effects that the transmitting electron has on the electromagnetic waves. So the receiving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. French New Wave Film Techniques Breathless is a 1960 French New Wave film, written and directed by Jean–Luc Godard, about a wandering criminal and his girlfriend. The film premiered in France, attracting two million viewers and winning both the Prix Jean Vigo and the Berlin International Film Festival Award for Best Director in 1960. Godard's interesting use of numerous jump cuts in the story as well as documentary style cinematography is what makes Breathless so iconic and recognized as one of the earliest and most influential examples of the French New Wave genre. One of the main components of the film is its use of jump cuts. In Godard's work, every scene with slow intervals was edited or removed, creating multiple jump cuts that represented the passage of time. This feature was a common method used in the French New Wave genre of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main character breaks the forth wall, a method that dismisses the common film making practice of the time, mirroring the rebellious nature once again. The French New Wave genre strived to go against the aspects of Hollywood professionalism of other films, and Godard does so in many of his works. In Breathless, as the camera focuses on the main character, he looks right back and speaks to the audience. This technique allows the story to progress through as the main character narrates. Apart from jump cutting, Godard uses documentary style cinematography to differ from the sporadic effects of his editing. The film's cinematography is captured in a hand–held like manner, creating a sense of realism. • 9. The French New Wave Cinema French New Wave cinema is widely considered one of the most influential periods in cinematic history. The filmmaking techniques and ideas utilized during the French New Wave period can still be seen in modern cinema, with some films uses them more than others. Two films that more obviously been influenced by the era are Quentin Tarantino 's 1992 film Reservoir Dogs and Christopher Nolan's 2000 film Memento. These films exude many traits and styles synonymous with French New Wave cinema such as jump cuts and non–continuity editing, a low budget, anti–heroic main characters, as well as others. French New Wave was a cinematic movement that was active between the late 1950's and the late 1960's though the origins go back to german occupied France from the early 1940's. Following the liberation of 1944, France saw the end of restrictions of media imposed by german occupation and the cinema became more popular than ever, with a stockpile of banned American films starting to flow in and France ramping up film production once again. Despite this by the early 1950's it became more popular opinion by both critics and audiences that had become, for a lack of a better word, stale, getting bogged down in an endless cycle of " generic historical reconstructions and uninspired literary adaptations... French Cinema was said to be in desperate need of a new direction " (Neupert, 17). During this time the film magazine, Cahiers du Cinema, was founded. Some of its young writers, such as ... French New Wave filmmakers believed in auteur cinema, and they tried to make films in which social and political issues were explored. French New Wave movies were made with a small budget, natural setting, quick shootings, with a small crew, hand–held cameras, and young actors (Philippe, 2010). The French New Wave movies had some common thematic affinities; many of these movies portrayed that authoritative, romantic, and political relationships are distrustful (Thompson & Bordwell, 2010). • 13. Amélie: The New Wave During the French New Wave, many critics became the moviemakers. One of the main qualities of the New Wave were the casual looks of the films. In addition, the New Wave also used a large amount of camera movements. The film Amélie is inspired by the French New Wave and uses its distinct characteristics throughout the movie. In the film Amélie, director Jean–Pierre Jeunet uses skillful directing, lighting, editing, and form to achieve themes such as innocence and happiness. Jean–Pierre Jeunet is able to maintain the themes, simplicity and happiness, with strong directing. Having strong directing allows the components of the mise en scene to be coherent throughout the film. As a foundation, Jeunet develops a setting to help emphasize Amélie's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Editing allows the director to make the themes of the film appear clearly and correctly during a film. This is achieved through elements such as, montage, time manipulation, and shot design. In Amélie, the director uses montage to further advance the narrative of the story. In addition, montage can be used to help build character traits. For example, in the scene where Amélie asks the question, "How many couples are having an orgasm now?" the director uses montage sequences to evoke humor. Using this montage helps to develop Amélie's character traits while also building upon the themes of the movie. In addition to montage, time manipulation also helps the director further advance the story. An example of time manipulation shown in the film is the scene where Amélie is cutting the letters in to pieces incredibly fast. There are two main purposes for the director doing this: first, to shorten the amount of time this task takes to complete and, second, to help the audience gain insight into Amélie's character. In order to make the montage and time manipulations more effective in the film, shot design is important. Throughout the film, Jeunet consistently uses close–up shots and zoom shots. These shots are effective because it enhances the audience's experience and draws their focus towards the characters emotion. In Amélie, understanding the emotions of the characters is important to the story. This is because Amélie expresses herself more with her nonverbal language than her verbal language. In particular, Amélie speaks mostly through her eyes and other facial expressions. Another important aspect of editing in Amélie is the widespread use of Computer– Generated Images (CGI), which can be seen in every scene of the film. A unique usage of CGI in the film is the scene where Amélie turns to liquid in the middle of the café. These special effects help to further the film's sense of fantasy and ... • 15. Wave Interactions Wave Interactions Wave interactions include reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference. Wave interactions occur when a wave hits something and it either reflects, refracts, diffracts, or there is an interference. Many different types of waves can be involved in wave interactions including sound, light, surface, etc. Reflection occurs when a particular wave, or waves, bounce, or reflect back from an object through which they cannot pass. An echo is a good example of a reflection wave interaction, but reflection can occur with other types of waves, too. Light waves can be reflected too. A light source, such as a light bulb or the sun, gives light to an object. That object reflects some of the light, and when the light that has been reflected hits one's eye, he or she could see the object. When waves hit an object, they reflect back in the same direction. Waves that are reflected have the same speed and frequency as the original wave, so only their direction is changed. On the other hand, when waves hit an object at an angle, they bounce at the same degree of angle, but in a different direction (CK–12 Foundation, 2017). The bending of waves as they pass from one form of matter to another is refraction. When light travels from an object to one's eyes, it makes the object seem to be in a different location. As waves access a new medium. they travel at a different rate in the alternative medium. For instance, light waves travel at a lower rate in water than in air. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Environment Of Surfing (Part II) Surfing –– The Environment of Surfing (Part I of II) Surfing has changed since Christian missionaries observed Polynesians in the waves centuries ago. Light, new materials and a variety of board shapes have opened surfing to more people while allowing expert surfers to ride more waves in different ways. In the US, surfers can be found along the Atlantic seaboard and from Alaska to Baja on the Pacific side of the nation (and, of course, Hawaii). Choosing Your Style The first surfboards were heavy wooden boards over 10 feet long, and 11– to 14–foot boards are still used for tandem surfing, where two people ride together. When you learn to read waves, you'll be observing how frequently the sets come in, where the wave is breaking, and how well–formed (and surfable) the wave is. Every surfer takes time to watch the waves before getting in the water, and sometimes what they see is that the beach isn't good for surfing that day. The best way to learn to read waves is from an experienced surfer. But not all of us have a good friend who wants to help us work into the local surf spot (more about territoriality later). Fortunately, most US surf areas have local surf schools in operation, some that even offer teaching trips to warm–water vacation spots like Mexico. The number of American features increased tenfold while French film output reduced to just seventy–eight features a year. Similar agreements with other European countries worsened the situation as countries which traditionally relied on French Cinema were being saturated by Hollywood. This caused an outrage within the industry and in 1948 the French Government introduced legislation which brought back a quota on American films of 121 per year. Along with this quota, legislation was introduced which would shape the French film industry throughout the 50s. Major bank loans were made available for stable production companies to finance future films and a new admissions tax was introduced. If a film was successful then a large fund would build up which the government made specifically available to producers to fund future films. This encouraged production companies to make popular and safe films with star names and well known stories, and discouraged experimentation. A shift in thinking and migration has formed a new wave of Christian thought in southern regions of the world and the benefits are uneven resulting in; the strong are getting stronger and the weak are continuing to whisk away while holding on to hope. It's safe to say that in many parts of Africa, Latin America and Asia, religion is about sheer survival through adaptation, identity and personal faith. It has been predicted by cultural historians that a shift in world culture and a decrease of clashes among civilizations. Well, part of that prediction is current with the expansion of Christianity into new areas and the decease of clashing has not cease, but rising. The part of reading titled "The New Feminism Of The 'Second Wave'" was probably one of the more interesting parts. The fact that for some women the discrimination ban (in relation to sex) did more damage than good was a real shock to me. The fact that women were fired, and victimized after that movement was something that I didn't imagine. Obviously this wasn't the case for all women, and how some greatly benefitted from this movement. Obviously the movement was a huge step for most women, and their wanting to pursue a career. They were thought of as dirty, and containing many STI's. Obviously this movement did a lot of great things for the, whats now known as, LGBTQ community. For example, they got doctors to prove that being anywhere on the gay spectrum is not a choice, but is naturally how someone is born. They proved the "normality" of being gay, lesbian, or bisexual. At this point in him (around 1970's) it was thought of as disease, and something that certain doctors could "cure" someone of. As history shows us, they did believe it, but this could also involve money for the doctor. Why would they, scientifically, admit that someone that makes them a good portion of their money, is fake; they wouldn't. From this liberation movement newspapers, magazines, and pride flags were then sold for the community, and or allies. The film was directed and produced by Elisa Bates. It was shown in many surf film festivals including; New York Surf Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, and Pop–up Surf Film Festival. There is something so spiritual about surfing. I have never surfed a day in my life but every time I watch others surf I feel this yearning to pick up a board and join them. It looks like one of the most dangerous but most fulfilling activities at the same time. I once read somewhere that humans are attracted to water and enjoy being in water because 70% of our body is made up of water and at molecular level, we crave water. When I watch surfers, I feel that it's true and that I'm being pulled into the waters from deep within myself. It's no surprise the sound of waves calms most people and helps them to relax. We associate the sounds of the ocean with calmness so surfers are just people in search of the ultimate mediation. Don't get me wrong, surfing is not as simple as picking up a board and going into the ocean. It takes a lot of hard work to be able to surf and the bigger the waves, the harder it is to surf. Disability law works for transsexuals, and is currently available to people without current diagnosed gender identity disorder, so it could protect more people in the coming future, as it continues to be used. In this essay I will give a brief overview of disability law within the trans community, and gender binary populace. Their have been current efforts to use disability law for trans people, in what is known as the "medical model" of disability, which relies only on medical diagnoses. In addition, the "medical model" has regarded disability as a biological reality of impairment, which could be a defect or sickness rather than an issue caused by the environment. In the past transsexuals have been successful in securing protections against employment, winning protections on the basis of disability though employment practice and sex discrimination claims. • 33. New Wave Music : The Genre Of Rock Music New wave is a genre of rock music popular from the late 1970s to the mid–1980s with ties to 1970s punk rock. New wave moved away from blues and rock and roll sounds to create pop music that incorporated disco, mod, and electronic music. Although it incorporates much of the original punk rock sound and ethos, new wave exhibits greater complexity in both music and lyrics. Common characteristics of new wave music include the use of synthesizers and electronic productions, the importance of styling and the arts, as well as diversity. New wave has been called one of the definitive genres of the 1980s, after it grew partially fixated on MTV, and the popularity of several new wave artists, attributed to their exposure on the channel. In the mid–1980s, differences between new wave and other music genres began to blur. During the 2000s, a number of acts, such as the Strokes, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand and The Killers explored new wave and post–punk influences. The catch–all nature of new wave music has been a source of much confusion and controversy. The 1985 discography Who's New Wave in Music listed artists in over 130 separate categories. New wave first emerged as a rock genre in the early 1970s, used by critics including Nick Kent and Dave Marsh to classify such New York–based groups as the Velvet Underground and New York Dolls. Like the filmmakers of the French new wave movement, its new artists were anti–corporate and experimental. Part of what attracted Stein and others to new wave was the music's stripped back style and upbeat tempos, which they viewed as a much needed return to the energetic rush of rock and roll and 1960s rock that had dwindled in the 1970s with the ascendance of overblown progressive rock and stadium spectacles. Music historian Vernon Joynson claimed that new wave emerged in the UK in late 1976, when many bands began disassociating themselves from punk. New wave died out in the mid–1980s, knocked out by guitar–driven rock reacting against new wave. Late 1970s new wave acts such as the Pretenders and the Cars were more likely to be found on classic rock playlists than on new wave playlists there. That same year, the band was signed to Sire Records and began work on their debut, Talking Heads:77 on which "Psycho Killer" was found and charted. In 1978, they teamed up with Brian Eno to record More Songs About Buildings and Food, where they would find even more chart success with a cover of Al Green's "Take Me to the River." French New Wave and Poetic Realism Essay Since the very first actualities from the Lumière brothers and the fantastical shorts of Maries Georges Jean Méliès, cinema has continually fulfilled its fundamental purpose of artistic reflection on societal contexts throughout the evolution of film. Two French cinematic movements, Poetic Realism (1934–1940) and French New Wave (1950–1970), serve as historical bookends to World War II, one of the most traumatic events in world history. The Rules of the Game (Jean Renoir, 1939) is a classic example of French Poetic realism that depicts the disillusionment in society and government politics by a generation already traumatized by the monumental loss of human life during the First World War. Breathless (Jean Luc Godard, 1960), one of Jean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Renoir exemplifies what Andre Bazin refers to as a director with faith in reality. In his essay "Evolution of the Language of Cinema", Bazin contrasts the heavy editing and choppy style of the Soviet montage tradition with Renoir who "uncovered the secret of a film form that would permit everything to be said without chopping the world up into little fragments, that would reveal the hidden meaning in people and things without disturbing the unity natural to them" (38). Realism, in this sense, means showing long continuous shots without manipulation through editing and cross cutting––– to tell a story in the same form as if it were unfolding in the real world. Renoir plays with the idea of the formative and imaginary "farce" of the societal world by staging these formative traditions within the editing conventions of realism. This integration of a lyrical and poetic story within the poignant critique of a dark reality can be seen during the hunting scene, which intersperses documentary style footage of animals throughout. The complexity of this scene requires the active attention of the audience and demands a closer look at the realities behind societies' farce, which resulted in audience rioting in theaters when the movie was first released. In this way, Renoir successfully ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He is the aloof, anti–establishment hero who finds himself surrounded by the establishment as he returns home from college. His affair with Mrs. Robinson explores the sexual and psychological tensions that many New Wave films explored. As Hoffman stands at the bottom of the pool in scuba gear, it is clear that he is not part of the world created by his parents, but he is not sure where he belongs. The film uses popular music to help tell the story, in this case the music of Simon and Garfunkel. It seems that the filmmaker checked all the boxes, leaving no New Wave ... George Lucas New Wave During the 1960s and 1970s many nations around the world had a film revolution where young filmmakers were making new and different types of movies, they called this movement a "New Wave." Although Hollywood was was the film capital of the world, it also went through a movement where young directors were taking control of their films over the production studios, the films were reaching to younger audiences, and the films were generally more independent and had to be cheap. The reason for this "new wave" movement was because old Hollywood was losing money and it needed a new way of making films, it needed to be shaken up. George Lucas was one of these directors, being 29 at the time of directing his second film American Graffiti. Lucas was challenged by Francis Ford Coppola to produce a script that would appeal to mainstream audiences(Hearn). Lucas, accepting the challenge, based the script of the film off of his 1960s teen years in Modesto, California. Lucas felt his experience with picking up girls in the 60s would induce nostalgia into the similarly aged moviegoers at the time. The movie was aimed toward people from ages 20 to 30 and Lucas based each of the four main male characters on different points in his life. Lucas felt compelled to document the whole experience and what my generation used as a way of meeting girls(Hearn)." Lucas being a new young director had trouble pitching the idea to financiers and distributors, where he was turned down by every studio except for Universal Pictures. The lack of financiers forced Lucas to create his own production company, Lucasfilms Ltd and partner up with Francis Ford Coppola's production company in order for the film to get enough money to be made. For this reason, the movie also had to be cheap, which was another characteristic of general new wave cinema. The film had a production budget of $777,000, however, the movie was an immense success earning over $140,000,000 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Cleo 5 to 7 as a New Wave Film Cleo 5 to 7 as a New Wave Film Agnes Varda is not only one of the few female directors of new wave cinema; she is also credited as having helped create the genre. Her short film La Point–Courte is considered by some as the first new wave film. Her first full length movie, Cleo 5 to 7 falls within this genre as well. It is the story of a young woman dying of cancer and how she sees the world in the context of time. We follow the singer Cleo as she changes into the woman Flora and as she does so she begins to look at time in a different manner. It is the way time is represented through the camera shots which really make this film part of its new wave genre. The movie begins with a five minute prologue that occurs during the credits in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that this is used in a film that is other wise more or less uncut, in terms of it following Cleo for the last 90 minutes of waiting for her test results, keeps the film from having a documentary feel. Another interesting use of camera cutting can be found in the in between scene where Cleo is roaming the streets of Paris. She is now becoming the one watching other people rather than being the one watched as she was in the beginning (probably because of her beauty and famous singer status). While she is watching the camera cuts between other people's conversations and then while she is walking the camera is in essence her point of view. However during this walk, the people passing are watching her as well, thus proving that this is the transition time. The use of cutting between shots of her and shots of all these people passing her not only show this change in who is watching who, but also allows for a sense of time passing. Interspersed with these shots are images of people we have already met, the widow, the boyfriend, the piano player, as well as the images of a monkey resting on a clock and her wig resting on the mirror, these things conveying how the people who know her see her and how she sees herself. This is a genius montage because these two things represent the same thing, how people see her, how she sees people, and how she sees herself, and by interspersing them we see ... Tom Brennan Film Analysis Comparative Essay – Tom Brennan and The Wave In the book Tom Brennan and the documentary The Wave, the role of insiders and outsiders in society is shown, also both the film and novel show how there are many individuals who are affected by being not accepted. There many examples in the novel Tom Brennan and the film The Wave that support this point. In Tom Brennan the major example of this is when there is a car accident caused by drink driving. As a result of the accident the Brennan family become outsiders and forced to move away from their town. The Wave's idea is to show how a small group can turn into a large movement because people see The Wave as the 'cool' thing to be a part of, thus joining the group. The Wave became so successful because people in their society want to fit and be a part of something rather than being left out and bullied. The Wave also shows how the people who don't believe in the group and are not a part of it are treated by the people in the group. The way the outsiders are treated is by being disrespected and bullied. However at the end of the film The Wave shows the audience how fitting in is not always a good thing as the group is then compared to the Nazi movement which shows the that the people who stated that The Wave's goals and intensions were wrong were right in the end. True or False: The electron in the receiving antenna oscillates at a lower frequency than the electron in the transmitting antenna because of the distance between the two antennas. False: when the transmitting antenna's electron oscillates, it sets up on an electromagnetic wave that oscillates at the same frequency. This wave causes the electron in the receiver to oscillate at the same frequency. Electrons, therefore, in both the transmitter and receiver (antennas) oscillate at identical frequencies. True or False: If the frequency of oscillation increases but the amplitude of the electron oscillation remains the same, then the electron in the transmitting antenna is experiencing larger accelerations (recall what you know about acceleration and motion). True: electrons must move faster as they oscillate back and forth in order for the frequency to increase while the amplitude remains the same. Delta velocity / time is a measure of the average acceleration. A larger change in velocity than at the old frequency if the electron is ovine faster towards its peak height than away from its peak height at the new frequency. Breaking The Standards Of Film: The French New Wave French New Wave: Breaking the Standards The French New Wave during the 1950s and 1960s broke the standards of cinema, and revolutionized the film industry. "During the late 1950s and early 1960s, the New Wave rejuvenated France's already prestigious cinema and energized the international art cinema as well as film criticism and theory, reminding many contemporary observers of Italian neorealism's impact right after World War II" (Neupert xv). World War II left in a large amount of debt. At that time, very few films produced outside of France was not allowed to be played into theatres. However, the Blum– Byrnes Agreement signed in 1946 allowed France to ease the burden of debt. The signing of this agreement allowed American products such as films ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When watching a movie during this new generation of films is the editing sets it apart from earlier films. Films during the New Wave used jump cuts throughout the film. A jump cut is defined as, "an abrupt break in the continuity of a scene created by editing out part of a shot or scene" ("Jump cut"). A jump cut shows the difference of time and space between two shots to match or mismatch scenes to make a connection. Before the French New Wave, film directors avoided this technique to keep the illusion of reality and continuous editing between shots or scenes. Previous films would use a long shot to set up a scene, and shot–reaction shots to keep the continuity of the film. These old techniques were the main formula known as the "Classic Hollywood Narrative". The Classic Hollywood Narrative had certain techniques that all filmmakers followed and did not break these rules to ensure the illusion of reality is kept in the audience's perspective. In Goddard's film, Breathless (Godard 1960), Jean Seberg (Patricia Franchini) and Jean Paul Belmondo (Michel Poiccard) drive in a car around Paris. Godard uses jump cuts when the characters are discussing and not the normal long take. The frame is not composed over the shoulder and is positioned a little off the shoulder. The conversation is not a shot–reaction shot and the audience does not see Jean Paul's face during the conversation besides a few moments. This film shows the discontinuity of editing and following the rules of the editing. Thus, the audience is aware he/she is watching a movie and the illusion of reality is broken. The Classic Hollywood Narrative stated that transitions from scene to scene was moving one location to next and watching the time it took to get to the new scene. However, in the French New Wave filmmakers just jumped to a new scene and used the idea of "show and don't tell" ("Breaking The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Sound Waves Essay What is a sound wave? A sound wave is produced by a mechanical vibration, such as a tuning fork. The vibrating object causes the surrounding medium, such as air, to vibrate as well. The wave travels through the medium to a detector, like your ear, and it is heard. As with any type of wave, a sound wave is also described by it's wavelength, amplitude, period, and frequency. WAVELENGTH is the distance from one point on the wave, to the next identical point, or the length of one part of the wave. Where the elastic property is usually the bulk modulus or Young's modulus of the medium, and the inertial property is the density of the medium. The red bar on the left acts as the driving piston. If it moves in a sinusoidal manner from left to right, then the wave that is produced will be a sinusoidal wave. Since the wave is sinusoidal, the wavelength, amplitude and frequency are constant. This is seen in nature as a tuning fork, which produces a periodic sound wave. In a one dimensional tube as shown above, each particle undergoes simple harmonic motion. The volume that is contained in one wavelength also undergoes this same motion. We can represent the displacement of this volume as: s(x,t) = smax cos(kx – wt), where smax is the maximum displacement or displacement amplitude, k is the angular wave number, and w is the angular frequency of the piston. We can also represent the change in pressure at any point in the same manner as we did for the volume displacement. That is shown by: dP(x,t) = dPmax sin(kx – wt), where dPmax is the maximum change in pressure, k is angular wave number, and w is angular frequency. By combining the two equations we can receive the result: dPmax = pvwsmax where the maximum change in pressure (dPmax), is equal to the density ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Astruc went on to describe how the problem of the cinema is how to express thought. • 61. Identifying Human Hair and Animal Fair by Laser Diffraction 1. Introduction: 1.1 Overview The ability to identify an animal by examining its fur is a useful one for taxonomists and biologists. The hair of prey is often not digested by a predator, and so can be found in the predators scat and measured to ascertain its diet (Anwar et al., 2011). An electron microscope can be used to obtain a lot of data from hair, including its width and the shape and texture of its surface, however electron microscopes are expensive and time consuming to operate (Sessions et al., 2009). Lasers are much cheaper and can be used to easily measure the width of narrow objects by measuring the interference pattern created when laser light is diffracted around the object. As a result, laser diffraction may be a more preferable method for identifying hairs based on their width. This experiment hopes to show that laser diffraction is an accurate enough method for obtaining the width of narrow objects, such as animal and human hairs, to allow comparison between them. 1.2 Wave interactions 1.2.1 Diffraction: Diffraction is a physical phenomenon that occurs when waves encounter an obstacle or gap between obstacles. Depending on the wavelength of the wave and the size of the obstacle or gap waves bend and spread out. Waves tend to diffract more around objects or gaps of a similar size to their wavelength. How a wave will diffract when it meets an object can be modelled using Huygen's construction. Huygen's construction is based on Huygen's principle of light ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many new way groups in the world, but Charlton only selected some of the most notable groups. Charlton divided these notable groups by American and British nationalities. In order to give equal attention to both sides, I have chosen four primary artists to represent new wave. We will begin with the Americans. Devo was created by Bob and Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob and Jerry Casale, and Allan Alan Meyers, in 1972, according to All Music Guide. The group first gained national attention in 1975 when they made a short film entitled The Truth About De–Evolution. The band got their name from the idea that "instead of evolving mankind has actually regressed." The group impacted new wave by the use of surreal humor mixed with commentary on the current human condition and dehumanized electric music. *According to the band's official website, Rolling Stone Magazine initially called the group fascist. Their most popular hit in the United States was "Whip It", which at its high of popularity reached number fourteen on Billboard's Hot One Hundred. We analyse the mechanism by which metamaterials are able to exhibit this property which is exploited to develop the Harry Potter–esque invisibility cloaks. We briefly discuss the whole new branch of optics called "Transformation Optics" developed for this purpose, and comment on the extent to which these materials can cloak. Introduction Metamaterials are artificially designed materials which have properties that cannot be found in natural materials.[1] They were first theoretically proposed by Veselago in 1968 as materials having negative permeability and permittivity. This is why these are also known as Left Handed Materials (LHM) or Negative Refractive Index materials (NIM). The first discovery in this domain was done by Sir Pendry et al in 1996, who discovered a wire medium with negative permittivity. This was followed by other significant discoveries like negative permeability by Pendry in 1999 and LHM by Sir Smith in 2001. Metamaterial structures can either be periodic (homogenous) or non–periodic (inhomogenous). Their properties depend on the construction and arrangement of their constituents. Various polls and research indicate that though charter schools are held up to uphold higher educational standards, they seem to continuously fall short comparable to their nemesis, public schools. Reports based on each state statistically show that charter schools are closing in record numbers. Some charter schools do not even make it complete a whole academic year. Mismanagement of funds is the culprit to these charter schools closing. Once again, this may be another indication that could plausibly prove the point that the driving forces to operate such school may be financially driven and not the academic in itself. There is a notion that charter schools can "buy" their way into academic success. There is no guarantee that this has not or will not transpire. However, Hollywood dramatization of how affluent and prestigious private schools have the means to override or make officials "blind to certain things" may be the precursor for what charter schools are modeled after.
