2. The Mission Process
Practical Mission
Face it. Every church has a
practical mission.
It is to attract more members to
support your community
congregation. It helps to keep
this in mind even as we pursue
loftier goals.
Philosophical Mission
Strategic Mission
This reflects the personality
and passion of your group of
people. This Mission
Statement should outlive
demographic change. It may
reflect your denominational
distinction.
This is the public face of
your community AND a
recruitment tool. It is more
practical and specific. It
could change every year or
so.
There’s more to Mission Statements than may meet the eye!

3. The Mission Process-Example
Practical Mission
Philosophical Mission
Strategic Mission
• 20 New Members each month
• Meet budget of $200,000 per
year.
• Increase membership age
demographic of people 10 to
30.
• Fund a mission project.
To be living witnesses for a
living God.
To engage each member
in at least one practical
outreach effort.
To visit the home of every
new resident.
Most people concentrate on the philosophical without paying
attention to the underlying need or having a strategy.

Mission statements can present problems.
A mission too broad will not inspire change.
So many things already fit under the umbrella
that there is no reason to stretch.

On the other hand, a mission too narrow
could discourage members or potential
members who have interests and talents
outside the given statement.
That can be unwelcoming or unsettling to
seekers.
Aim for a mission statement that gives
direction without being too rigid.

6. Genesis 12:1-3
The Lord said to Abram: Go out
from your land, your relatives,
and your father’s house to the
land that I will show you. I will
make you into a great nation, I
will bless you, I will make your
name great, and you will be a
blessing. I will bless those who
bless you, I will curse those who
treat you with contempt, and all
the peoples on earth will be
blessed through you.

according to the grace given us.

Editor's Notes
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Welcome to Mission Inspiration. This slideshow was created from 2x2's most popular post—a list of Bible verses that can inspire mission.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Mission statements are intended to inspire and unite. But every church has members with diverse objectives. This isn't necessarily bad. In fact it's realistic.Decades ago it was common for congregations to have multiple organizations with separate objectives and even separate bank accounts—all working at mission. (Ladied Aid Societies, Sunday Schools and Individual Sunday School Classes, etc.). It helps to recognize the diversity within your congregation.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----The portrait of Abraham and his nomadic family appears to be one of peace and fraternity. But Ishmael and Isaac eventually went their separate ways. One mission resulted in two of the world's major religions.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Keeping in touch with God is a challenge in itself.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Arts and music missions are popular.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----God wants His sheep to know Him and be joyful.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Discuss being a called people. Calls in the Bible are usually unexpected and unwelcome—not to mention dangerous.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Justice, mercy and humility. Can the three co-exist?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----The photo is from the church in Pakistan. It was taken only a few weeks after their congregation was bombed by terrorists. Taking the Good News to all the world is a huge challenge and biblical mandate.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----The fish bowl is a simple of confinement. How confined are we within the vastness of God's creation.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----City churches face hughe and ever-changing challenges. The answers to urban ministry are difficult. Can your congregation be a beacon in the city?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Peace. You have to work at it!
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Our definition of the ends of the earth is regularly challenged. How would you define it?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----God wants us to use our minds. Can your church provide thought leadership or educational opportunities?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----The organ creates one sound from many programmed stops. A more modern vine and branches analogy?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Who is welcoming whom in this photo? Hospitality is always two-way.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Evil and good are often complex concepts. The dandelion is a weed AND a beautiful flower and source of food for bees and mankind. We'd have a heart time getting by without the work of bees, but we can do without the stings!
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Can your congregation encourage and nurture the families in your neighborhood? How about the single parent famiies and blended families? How about famiies with autistic or disabled or chronically ill family members?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Do you know any gentle congregations? How is their mission effective? Can you be a gentle congregation?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----The butterfly is the symbol of transformation—and the Resurrection. How can your congregation transform God's people?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Childhood has become complex in the modern world with split families and temptations of society. Is this a mission for your congregation?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Soul, mind and strength. Tools that we can nurture with love.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Soul, mind and strength. Tools that we can nurture with love.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Spirit and truth can be complex and misunderstood. Can your congregation work to nurture both?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Equipping people for service that will lead to maturity and unity of God's people is a mission challenge.
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----Every superhero has a calling that comes with a wardrobe. They work vigilantly for the underdog, for justice and reconciliation. Is this mission for you?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----We exist as God's people to worship. How does that fit into your mission?
----- Meeting Notes (11/12/13 18:05) -----A universal need of the God's people is to nurture relationships with one another and with God.
