- this is Greta Binford, a biology prof at L&C. she's interested in evolution-based diversity in spider venom....so, she likes to collect spiders, do DNA analysis on them, see how they fit on the phylogenetic tree. Last fall she taught Intro to Biology for non-majors, and decided that the class project for her 70 students would be to mimic some of her research....collecting spiders around campus and other parts of Portland, and do some DNA analysis on them. Greta also was hoping there would be some sort of web presence to showcase her students' work...so we got together with her and came up with some ideas on how to make that happen.
- Fortunately, the website Encyclopedia of Life has already figured this out. They have a page and ID for each level of phylogenetic hierarchy for user contributed content. Even better, they have an API for getting content out of their site, like creative commons images and links.
- This is Margo Ballantyne, who was our former Visual Resources Curator, and was a founding member of the accessCeramics project Mark mentioned. Last fall she led a study abroad program for L&C students to New York City, and she really wanted her students to do a project documenting graffiti and street art. Around the same time, I was itching to do a project using Flickr Places. Flickr Places is Flickr's infrastructure for associating images with places, whether it be a neighborhood city, country, etc.
