5. Proposed Procedure
As a class, lets come up with a procedure
to extract the DNA from the nucleus of the
plant cell.
What should we do first?

6. • SMASH the
Strawberry
First Step:
Let’s play with our food! Smash the
strawberry as best you can WITHOUT
breaking the bag.
We need to break apart the cell walls
to get inside the cell.
9. • Add Soap Buffer
Dissolve the Membrane
Add 10ml of extraction buffer to the
bag.
Seal the bag and start to smash the
strawberry for 1 more min.
We need to dissolve the membrane
around the nucleus just like we dissolve
the fat from frying pans.

11. •Filter the
Strawberry/Extraction
Mixturepour the
SLOWLY and CAREFULLY
mixture through the gauze in the funnel
into the test tube.
While letting it drip, draw your
extraction set up in the designated box.
We need to strain the cell fragments
from the DNA to get a good extraction.
13. •Clump the DNA
Add COLD Ethanol
Now let’s pull the DNA out.
Hold out your test tube with the filtered
mixture.
The teachers will come around and pour
COLD ethanol into your test tube.
