Think Twice
Our classroom is an online
environment so we don’t have the
luxury of non-verbal & visual cues that
we do in the face-to-face classroom, so
think before you send that message or
post that reply.
Everyone will be able to read your
Forum post or Chat entry so take a few
extra minutes to re-read what you have
written before selecting the “Send” or
“Enter” button.
Hint: you might even try reading it aloud.
Positive and Reflective
When responding to any Message, Forum Post or Chat entry
remember to use “reflective” language.
To do this first consider what the other
person has written then respond in the
positive and affirm those points you agree
with.
You could also provide specific examples or
supporting information that further affirms
those points of agreement.
Common Ground
If you have a differing view you want to
acknowledge what they have written
and respectfully indicate in what ways
you disagree.
 This should include examples for your
classmate to consider, not why you think
the other classmate is “wrong”.
 Another technique is to ask probing
questions to allow them to expand on their
knowledge, who knows you might find
common ground!
Noise
When you write in all CAPS this
actually means you are
SHOUTING what you have written
and could be considered rude.
So consider your capitalization and
font usage to best convey your
message and tone.
You should remember to utilize
your Spell Check and Grammar
Check with all written work.
Readability
Not everyone has the ability to
view emoticons, bold, underlining
and even font color in the same
way.
Oftentimes because of their
connectivity, the type of device
they use and their accessibility, so
always consider inserting the
words you intend to illustrate or
highlight instead.
Search First
Before jumping in and posting your
Question to the Q&A Forum, Search for
the Information in arching the APUS
classroom, online library or course
Syllabus.
Then if you still can’t find your answer,
post your question and let the class
know where you looked that way we can
be sure to send you to the correct
source.

Netiquette Guidelines

  • 4. Think Twice Our classroom is an online environment so we don’t have the luxury of non-verbal & visual cues that we do in the face-to-face classroom, so think before you send that message or post that reply. Everyone will be able to read your Forum post or Chat entry so take a few extra minutes to re-read what you have written before selecting the “Send” or “Enter” button. Hint: you might even try reading it aloud.
  • 5. Positive and Reflective When responding to any Message, Forum Post or Chat entry remember to use “reflective” language. To do this first consider what the other person has written then respond in the positive and affirm those points you agree with. You could also provide specific examples or supporting information that further affirms those points of agreement.
  • 6. Common Ground If you have a differing view you want to acknowledge what they have written and respectfully indicate in what ways you disagree.  This should include examples for your classmate to consider, not why you think the other classmate is “wrong”.  Another technique is to ask probing questions to allow them to expand on their knowledge, who knows you might find common ground!
  • 7. Noise When you write in all CAPS this actually means you are SHOUTING what you have written and could be considered rude. So consider your capitalization and font usage to best convey your message and tone. You should remember to utilize your Spell Check and Grammar Check with all written work.
  • 8. Readability Not everyone has the ability to view emoticons, bold, underlining and even font color in the same way. Oftentimes because of their connectivity, the type of device they use and their accessibility, so always consider inserting the words you intend to illustrate or highlight instead.
  • 9. Search First Before jumping in and posting your Question to the Q&A Forum, Search for the Information in arching the APUS classroom, online library or course Syllabus. Then if you still can’t find your answer, post your question and let the class know where you looked that way we can be sure to send you to the correct source. If you have an answer for a fellow student please post it and help out a fellow classmate!
