Touchstone 1: Case Study Close Reading ASSIGNMENT: For this Touchstone, you will select a case study of a topic in U.S. history source to read like a historian. As you learned, doing a close reading means reading the text multiple times, with a different set of questions in mind each time. You will then write and submit answers to a set of close reading questions: Origin and context: Who wrote this text? When did they write it? What do I know about the events being discussed? Meaning: What is the author’s main idea? What is the text generally about? Argument: What is the author’s point of view? Are they trying to convince the reader of something? What evidence do they use to support their argument? Skills: Is there evidence in the text of agility or problem solving skills being used? In what way(s)? This Touchstone provides an opportunity for you to delve more deeply into a topic in U.S. history and practice thinking like a historian. It will also prepare you for later Touchstones, which ask you to research a historical question and create a presentation to help others understand how historical events can be applied to current issues. Lastly, it will develop your problem solving skills, because being a critical reader helps you to obtain and evaluate the information you need to solve problems. AlRabah1 Rashed AlRabah Susana Marcelo English 113A 17 November, 2014 AlRabah2 Nicaraguan Civil War The Nicaraguan civil war was a traumatizing experience both to the Citizens and the international world especially the United States of America. The war reminded people of the previous experience in the 1912 civil war. The war involved the US supported conservatives against the Mexico supported Liberals. Each party was seeking power with one faction agitating for respect to the constitutionality while the other faction is fighting to protect the interest of the United States implemented by the Somoza dynasty. This paper looks at the history or background of the war, the causes well as the aftermath of the war. The Nicaraguan Civil war was a one-year affair beginning in 1962 and ended in 1927. The war came as a result of e coup d’état by Emiliano Chamorro a member of the Conservative party and former President of Nicaragua. According to the article “Sandino: The Testimony of a Nicaraguan Patriot” by Conrad, Robert Edgar, the author opines that Chamorro’s move was informed by his desire to take control of the nations. Chamorro would later force the then President and Vice president, Carols Solórzano and Juan Sacasa respectively to flee Nicaragua. Additionally, Chamorro got rid of all the Liberals in his government with hope that the United States would support him. However, the US government did not approve of his regime on grounds that he acquired power through the backdoor thus unconstitutional. I agree with Thomas’ position about the war when he says that the war ensued after the liberals who were yearning for power were enticed with support by the US armed forces. Although the war was started as a result of the coup by Chamorro, (Morris et al, 1986) argues that advent of the war was the hardline stance by the Liberals under the control of Sandino Cesar. He did not subscribe to the leadership influenced by the United States. The Liberals were against the US interference with the local affairs in their country through their continued funding of the Conservative regimes. This line of thought is supported by another article, "Celebrating the Demise of Solecism: Fifty Recent Sources on the Nicaraguan Revolution," by Booth (1982). The author indicated that the designated Sacasa Bautista supported liberals and the conservatives; Sacasa Diaz did win the voting process or election and was named as head on 1933Jan the 2nd.They add that in the United States, there was growing concern over the situation in Nicaragua. Although the Liberals opposed the invention of the US Marine’s in their political affairs, it is the latter that initiated the peace deal or the Peace of Tipitapa that in turn put an end to the war. It was after both eh Liberals and Conservatives handed in their ammunition of (31 machine guns and 3,704 rifles) and (308 machine guns and 10,445 rifles) respectively. The peace deal allowed Moncada to retain power until the next election.

The format for the paper is discussed in Appendix A below.Paper topics must be relevant to business ethics (not personal, professional, or social ethics).The required paper format is part of this syllabus (Appendix A). Appendix A: the required format for the term paper. Each item in bold in this appendix (i.e.,the words Claim, Explanation of the Claim, Reasons For/Against, Rebuttals) should appear on your paper. The paper will be discussed in class. If you miss this discussion, obtain notes from your classmates. You should take your audience to be an average reader, not your philosophy instructor. The most important part about the paper is that it should contain your original thoughts and arguments. In other words, this is an analysis paper not a research paper. It is easily ascertained when you have taken concepts, reasons, and discussion from some other source. The only things that you are allowed to research are the facts (which must be documented). The following facts should be researched: what countries permit bribery, what is defined as child labor, what are applicable laws, what are the legal definitions of discrimination, how many illegal aliens are working in the country. Also, this is a paper in business ethics. Do not write on ethics of individuals, societies, government organizations, etc. Chose a typical activity of a large corporation that is not covered by law, but appears morally impermissible to you. Claim: A single well-worded declarative statement. E.g., “Should American companies hire underage workers in countries that legally permit it?” is NOT in declarative form, and therefore is not a claim. Questions do not assert anything. The claim must have moral significance. For example, “Many US companies hire underage workers in countries that legally permit such hires” is a factual claim and does nothave moral significance. “It is economically advantageous for US companies to hire underage workers” is a pragmatic claim and doesn’t have moral significance. On the other hand, “It is permissible for the US companies to hire underage workers in countries that legally permit such hires.” does have moral significance. The claim must pertain to business ethics. Common problems: Vague claims; claims posed in the form of a question; too broad or too narrow claims; non-moral claims; more than one issue in the claim. Claims about abortion, death penalty, assisted suicide, legitimacy of war, cloning, religion, etc., are NOT relevant business ethics claims. Explanation of the Claim: You should explain very carefully and in common-sense vocabulary what you mean by the claim itself and by the terms involved in the claim. For example, it is not immediately apparent what is meant by “US companies should not hire underage workers in countries where it is legally permissible.” I do not know (or pretend not to know for the .

A debate is basically an argument. That is not an undisciplined shouting match between parties that passionately believe in a particular point of view. In fact the opposite is true. Debating has strict rules of conduct and quite sophisticated arguing techniques and you will often be in a position where you will have to argue the opposite of what you believe in.

UNST 107C: Portland FRINQ Fall 2015 Serbulo/Bolster In Defense of the River People: Closing Statement In 1983, David Sohappy and his son went to trial, charged with illegally harvesting salmon from the Columbia River. In the U.S. legal process, criminal charges are presented to a jury (a panel of your citizen “peers”) by a prosecuting attorney who argues for the conviction of the defendant (the person facing charges). A defense attorney argues on the defendant’s behalf, questioning the validity of the evidence presented by the prosecutor and presenting evidence demonstrating the defendant’s innocence. The trial process can be compared to the structure of a research paper. In the introductory section, each attorney makes an opening statement that summarizes what the jury should expect to hear from their side. Then, in the “body” of the trial, each side presents its witnesses and evidence which the opposing side has an opportunity to rebut. Finally, in the “conclusion,” the attorneys present a summary of their arguments to the jury in a closing statement. For this assignment, you will be an attorney defending (or prosecuting) the Sohappy family in the illegal fishing case. You will do research to collect evidence that shows that Sohappy was guilty or innocent of the charges (illegal fishing), organize your evidence into a coherent argument, and write a closing statement. In a closing statement, lawyers not only want to summarize the evidence presented that favored their side throughout the trial, but they also want to provide the jury with a plausible interpretation of how this evidence fits together, and why it demonstrates that the jury should consider the defendant guilty or not guilty. Purpose: In this assignment, you will develop and practice four essential skills: 1. To understand how authors use sources to construct an argument 2. To learn how to gather information from primary (and secondary) sources for a specific purpose 3. To evaluate and organize the information you collected to form a coherent argument 4. To develop arguments based upon a comprehensive research process Instructions: Part I: Gather your initial evidence—As you watch the film, the River People, record any facts, statements, or quotes that support Sohappy’s guilt or innocence. You will collect your evidence on the attached worksheet. For each piece of evidence, record your source (who said it). Summarize the evidence in your own words whenever possible. Engaging the Writing Process No two people compose in exactly the same way, and even the same person may go through the writing process in different ways with different assignments. Nevertheless, because no one can attend to everything at once, there are phases in handling any significant writing task. You explore the topic to get a sense of whether it will work for you and what you might be able to do with it; if the topic is working out for you, then you move into preparing to write, generating more content and planning your draft. The next phase is drafting your paper, getting a version on screen, however rough it may be, so that you can work toward the final draft. Getting there involves two further phases: revising your draft, where you make major improvements in it, followed by editing your draft, taking care of errors, sentences that do not read well, paragraphs lacking focus and flow, and so on. Exploring Your Topic For casemaking, exploring your topic means examining the issues involved in it. If your assignment calls for research, do some general reading about your topic to discover what the issues are. See pages 406–11 for how to find and take notes on source material. If your assignment does not call for research, rely on your general knowledge about the topic to formulate the issues. Page 243 Asking Questions: Find the Issues Asking Questions: Find the Issues An issue is a point of controversy always or frequently raised in connection with a particular topic. For your topic, begin by asking, “What are the questions that people disagree about when discussing this topic?” For instance, the primary purpose of prisons is always an issue when prison reform is discussed. Some see prisons as primarily punishment for crime; others see them as primarily institutions that should rehabilitate criminals. “What should prisons do?” is the question. Other questions include the following: What should be done about prison overcrowding? How can we reduce assaults on inmates by other, violent inmates? Is prison a breeding ground for more criminal behavior after inmates are released? If so, what can be done to prevent this from happening? ACTIVITY 10.1 Collaborative Activity Isolating the Issues List the issues connected with your topic. The key question is, “What do people argue about whenever this topic is discussed?” If your class is working with a common topic or you share your topic with at least one other student, you could collaborate to answer the following exploratory questions: ■ What issues were you unaware of before you formulated them? ■ What positions do people take on these issues? ■ What is your view of these issues? Consider your view of the topic now. If you had no opinion before examining the issues, are you beginning to form one now? If you had an opinion, is it changing significantly? Which issue interests you most? Consider focusing your essay on that issue. ▀ Order the Issues (Stasis) .
