the t f fi began as ffar
back as the late 1800’s. The sport became popular in the late 50’s and as the sport evolved the
surfboards became shorter and more maneuverable. By the mid 70’s surfing had reached its maturity
as an international sport and along with it came the branding of surf gear and major events such as the
Hyundai Pro Longboard tour and many more.
y g y
The resurgence of the Longboard, in 1987, brought about more refined traditional 9ft Longboard. Due to
recent advances in technology designers enabled extreme maneuvers traditional to the Shortboard to
be integrated into the laid back Longboard style.
The exciting collaboration of surfing styles has definitely defined the Modern Era of Longboarding as we
know it. Today the sport of surfing is an extremely commercial industry. Surfing now speaks to nearly all
segments of the population who relate to the sport through the strong fashion influence.
Longboarding is truly recognized as a full fledged international sport with its own World
Championships, Sponsors and commercial appeal.
3. Professional Longboard Assoc
Assoc.
The Professional Longboard Association (PLA) is a
professional surfing association committed and focused on
bringing longboarding to the fore front of the surfing and

4. 2009 PLA & ASP Partnership
Created in 1976, the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) was formed to sanction a loose knit of
surfing tournaments around the world.
Today the ASP, is still considered the International Governing Body of Surfing.
Currently, the ASP sanctions over 125 surfing events worldwide, and holds more than 200 international
surfing members; men, women and juniors.

In 2009, the ASP will once again partner with the PLA to sanction the complete PLA Series, both
professional men and women. The season long partnership creates benefits for both organizations
including:
ASP:
oCreation of a much needed Longboard Qualifying Series in the United States
oUnited States Surfers will have the ability to qualify for the World Longboard Championships
without competing in other internationally located events
p g y
oPossibility to generate more revenue for sponsored companies and partners
