2. •In the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, goal-line
technology made its first appearance in a major
competition, many years after sports such as tennis,
American football, and rugby implemented video
review. The 2014 World Cup makes use of a system
known as the GoalControl-4D system, which includes
seven high-speed cameras per goal arranged around
the roof and catwalks of the stadium. The cameras
remain fixed on any number of objects around the
pitch, including players, the referee, and the ball. If the
cameras determine that a ball crosses the goal line, the
referee receives a vibration on his wristwatch indicating
that a goal has been scored.
3. •Goal line technology has already played a part in the
2014 FIFA World Cup. In a group stage game between
France and Honduras, goal-line technology helped the
referee determine that France had indeed scored a
goal. Contrary to popular expectations, the flow of the
game went mostly uninterrupted by the review.
