• Read pages 232 and 233 of your textbook and answer the following questions.
1. What is the other name for the citric acid cycle?
Krebs cycle
2. Why is the citric acid cycle a cycle?
It is called a cycle because a four-carbon molecule of oxaloacetic acid is used in
the first reaction of the cycle and it is also one of its end products.
3. How many molecules of ATP and CO2 are produced each time the cycle turns?
One molecule of ATP and two molecules of CO2 are produced each time the cycle
turns.
4. What are NAD+ and FAD? How many molecules of NADH, FADH 2 and H+ ions are formed
during the citric acid cycle?
They are electron carriers. A total of three NADH molecules, three (3) H +, and one
FADH2 molecule are formed.
5. How many energized electrons do each electron carrier pass to the electron transport
chain in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion?
Each electron carrier passes two (2) energized electrons along to the electron
transport chain in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion.
