Editor's Notes
Welcome to this training session for JCPS substitute teachers. This presentation is designed for new substitute teachers in the Jefferson County Public School District. My name is Angela Moore, and I hope this session provides you with a general knowledge of the support system for substitute teachers in JCPS.
As a substitute teacher, you are an integral part of the District. You will impact the educational career of many students on a daily basis. JCPS expects all employees to provide professional service to its customers. You are JCPS!
Please take a moment to open the folder you received at the beginning of this training session. Locate your admit slip for this session. Please write a brief statement in response to the prompt: Describe your greatest concern about substitute teaching. PAUSE BRIEFLY FOR PARTICIPANTS TO WRITE THEIR RESPONSE. We’ll get back to this statement later in the presentation.
This session will provide a general overview of support systems available for substitute teachers as well as general tips for successful substitute teaching. I will refer to the following existing resources: SmartFindExpress and the JCPS Certified Substitute Teacher’s Handbook available on the district website. I’ve also created three new technological resources specifically for this presentation: the JCPS Substitute Teachers’ Blog, the Twitter feed, and the online video tutorials.
One of the most important resources for a substitute teacher in JCPS is SmartFindExpress, the online system for job assignments for substitutes. This online resource will be your go-to place for selecting and tracking your job assignments. You cannot report for a job assignment without a job number from this system. After logging in, employees will also see announcements important for substitutes. Let’s take a look at the log-in page for SmartFindExpress. CLICK ON LINK AT BOTTOM OF SLIDE AND WAIT FOR PAGE TO LOAD. This is the screen users will see before they log in. You will receive an access ID and pin from the district.
Substitute teaching can be very demanding, yet rewarding. The key to success is being prepared, the old Boy Scout motto. Let’s review some Tips for Success that I have condensed from the JCPS Certified Substitute Teacher’s Handbook. First, arrive early so you feel more prepared to meet the expectations of the school. You are required to arrive at your assigned school fifteen minutes prior to school start time and you must stay fifteen minutes after dismissal. Secondly, dress for success. Professional appearance has a positive influence on both students and other adults. Set yourself up for a successful day by dressing professionally. Next, follow the classroom teacher’s lesson plan as provided. Finally, you are expected to engage students in meaningful instruction and initiate the lesson as soon as class begins.
17Pleaselook for a moment in the left pocket of your folder. There you will find copy of page 17 from the JCPS Substitute Teacher’s Handbook. Each of you has a different highlighted section of the excerpt to read. After you read the highlighted portion of the excerpt on Classroom Management, on a sticky note provided, jot down the key idea from your assigned section. We will share these in a moment. GIVE PARTICIPANTS A FEW MOMENTS TO READ AND JOT DOWN KEY IDEA. Ask each participant to share his/her idea.
I would like to draw your attention to another section of this page from the Handbook. These are great tips for managing your classroom. Refer to these reminders and the handbook itself as a great resource for substitute teaching.
Substitute teaching can feel like an isolating experience. I have taken steps to provide resources for you that can be accessed from anywhere, at any time. I would like to introduce you to the new JCPS Substitute Teachers’ Blog. This blog will help answer your questions about substitute teaching and will provide a forum for discussing topics with one another. Let’s take a look at the site. Today’s admit slips will be some of the first blog post topics to help meet some of your needs. CLICK ON LINK TO SITE AND HIGHLIGHT THE POST, EMAIL SUBSCRIPTION, HOW TO CONTACT VIA EMAIL FOR BLOG POSTS SUGGESTIONS. MENTION THAT LATER THERE WILL BE A SECTION FOR ONLINE VIDEO TUTORIALS RELATED TO TOPICS IN SUBSTITUTE TEACHING.
It is important to us that you feel and stay connected with JCPS. One way to do so is to follow us on Twitter. I have created a new Twitter account for JCPS substitutes to follow. All you need is a Twitter account and you can follow our updates. Let’s take a look at our Twitter feed. CLICK ON LINK TO TWITTER FEED AND SHOW THE FEED AND READ SOME RECENT TWEETS.
The third new technological resource for JCPS substitute teachers is online video tutorials. I have used today’s training as the first video tutorial for new substitutes who were unable to attend today’s session. Other future topics may include how to use SmartFindExpress or accessing your JCPS employee account. Let’s take a look at a few moments of the online video tutorial of today’s presentation. CLICK ON LINK AND PLAY A FEW MOMENTS OF THE ONLINE TUTORIAL.
I hope you now realize the many support systems in place for substitutes to JCPS, and I hope you feel more confident to enter the classroom with success. As a new substitute teacher, you are a part of the JCPS team. Let’s work together to be the best substitutes in the country. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you do your job more effectively.
