Editor's Notes
Good morning. My name is Angela Moore, and I am a resource teacher with the Jefferson County Public Schools Human Resources department. I would like to share a little about my professional background before we begin. This is my tenth year in the education profession, and I have assumed a variety of roles throughout my career. I began as a high school English teacher, became an instructional coach for middle and high school literacy, advanced to an administrative position as a high school assistant principal, and currently, my role is to oversee placements of student teachers in JCPS, provide support for new teachers, recruit new teachers, and provide professional development.
To be successful as a student teacher, consider these tips. Consider student teaching your job. Take it seriously. Dress professionally every day. Act professional. You are not just a student anymore. You are a role model. You will work with impressionable minds. Student teaching should be viewed as a continuous, daily job interview. Keep in mind that you should be showcasing your best work. Make people want to hire you! Keep a journal. You may not remember everything you learn and experience months later when you become a classroom teacher. Don’t feel pressured to emulate your supervising teacher. Adopt techniques and procedures that work for you. Keep an eye out for problematic teaching techniques, etc. Pay special attention to the operation of the school at the beginning/end of the year. These can be challenging days, so try to learn how the best teachers are successful during these times. Remember, anyone you work with as a student teacher may become your boss or your colleague sometime during your career. Make a good impression.
These are the procedures the human resources department has created for conducting student teacher observations. Please note that our observations are conducted electronically. Also, let your university supervisor know if you have not been observed at least two weeks prior to the end of student teaching.
Plan now to create the best resume you can. The competition is very strong for teaching positions within JCPS. We look for candidates who have a philosophy of education that aligns with our district’s mission and core beliefs. We’ll look at those in a moment. Throughout your college experience, build a resume that includes volunteer and community service. Gain experience working with diverse populations. Get as much information, education, and experience as you can on classroom management, routines, and procedures. Work on building strong verbal and written communication skills. Maintain a high GPA. Again, take your student teaching assignment very seriously. Enhance your technology skills. Learn technology that classroom teachers use. Develop a teaching style that works for you, but strengthen your ability to use inquiry-based instruction and hands-on activities. Maintain a strong reference database (professors, community members, etc.). Review the online application process.
Ask participant with MISSION envelope to read mission. Focus on key words: Well being Commitment Success Family Community Collaboration Efficacy
Understand that our core beliefs drive everything we do in JCPS. Candidates must have a philosophy that aligns with these items. CORE BELIEF READ ALOUD BY PARTICIPANTS WITH SENTENCE STRIPS.
Access to the online application is available under Employment on our website. Review what applicants will need on hand to complete the application.
Disposition scores are critical to hiring. Take this part of the application very seriously. Study the JCPS mission and core beliefs prior to taking the survey. Review bullets. Participants should role play in groups the disposition survey “look for” qualities. Prior to the beginning of the presentation, participants were given a colored paper to determine their group. SIX GROUPS/TWO STANDARDS PER GROUP
References are of critical importance to gaining employment with JCPS. Let the person know that they will receive a form prior to sending their name. Additionally, consider your relationship with that person. If you are not on good terms with your current supervisor, make it so.
